God forbid, a thread about an 18 year old prospect , with 3-4 points (so far) in his 1st NHL game, on the prospect board.

Why such a thread? :shakehead

His first step quickness is almost non-existent. That can have you 3 steps behind in the NHL before you even get started. Nobody said his north-south skating was insufficient, it's his foot quickness. It still needs plenty of work...

He's also 225lbs...it's really not a problem, at least from what i've seen from him this year...maybe his skating was really horrible last year, because it's really not an issue for him this year...have you had the chance to see him play this year?

You know what...Todd Bertuzzi, Keith Tkachuck, John LeClair, etc. don't have first step quickness either, it's not their game, i'm not comparing Latendresse to them before anyone goes nuts

Need I remind everyone that Stanislav Chistov picked up 4 points in his first NHL game?

It's good to get excited about Latendresse's performance, but this game or the pre-season for that matter prove nothing.

Enthusiasm and excitement...good.

Ridiculous overhyping and pomp...not good.

I got slammed pre-draft for my expectations of Latendresse and his draft position, and several people ridiculed me after the draft. But this sort of thing isn't what I want to be hearing either about a guy whose doing well in training camp.

Hey, I supported you. I think we were the only two wanting to see the Canucks snag him. At least Bourdon's looking good though.

calm down les habitants... its one exhibition game.

No doubt about that...but you gotta admit, you can't blame anyone for being hyped over his inaugural NHL performance....exhibition or not. Nice effort by the 18 year old.

The kid just got the first star. BIG ovation from the crowd.

Saw him in Pierrefonds and he looked pretty good. Tonight's performance doesn't mean he's making the team. It does mean he'll probably be dressed for the next couple games though.

Funny.....I had him ahead of Brule going into the 2004/05 season and had him in my top ten at the end of last year.

This is not abotu overhyping our prospects. the fact is that Latendresse had a great rookie tournament and an even better camp with a huge 1st game. even Gainey (if I remember correctly) said that he has a chance to amke the big team. The fact is that Latendresse might be in the NHL this year which would be a HUGE surprise for us. He might pull a Bergeron but he migh also be a total flop after this game/camp.

Jean Béliveau said after the game that he really like the kid and that he was very happy to see a young guy play the game the way its suppose to be played.

He couldnt have started his pro career better then that. Let just hope he will continue to improve like he did since the beginning of training camp.

If the draft was held today im pretty sure that Latendresse would have been selected long before the second round

Wish the Wings would have used their 2nd round pick on Latendresse. Abdelkader? Who?

Anyway, nice performance vs. the Lightning. I've seen Latendresse play a few times during the WJC18's. Didn't look skating was a liability to me. But fans should be cautiously optimistic about their rookies.

If he's ready for the NHL and ready for at least a 3rd line role, great. If not, he's better off in Juniors and then the WJC's. It's a waste to have him hardly play at all and you don't want to waste a year of eligibility. Meaning if he plays at 18, he'll be a UFA at 25.

This is how it starts.

"better than koivu"

"Skating not an issue"

"playing like a first round pick" <---I'll break that one down for ya, that term means that he is playing as well as Sidney Crosby, Rick Nash, AO, are. This is factually incorrect, Latendresse is a great prospect, and he fits right in in montreal, but please guys, don't be idiots, as a lot of you are very close.

Luc Bourdon is playing excellent as well, but exhibition IS NOT the NHL.

If Latendresse scores 60 points and does all the things you say he will, then let the Latendresse HJs begin, but at this point, lets just sit back and watch the kid.

and yes, skating IS and issue.

Bertuzzi and Tkachuck both have decent NHL first step quickness. Bertuzzi is often stereotyped as slow, anyone who pays attention to him knows he is most certainly not.

you sure are not watching the same Latendresse as I do !!
unless you didnt watch him play since last year ...
Latendresse worked really hard this summer and it shows !!
the guy is so mature .. incredible .. i don't want to hype him more (he don't need it) ..

but the guy like legionnaire or you won't be able to stop the hype !
dunno why you guys are so hard on habs fans on this ..
it's the damn prospect board and there is maybe 1 habs fan on each 5 users on this boards .. Actually I wouldn't mind a Kopitar performance thread maybe legionnaire could start one.. I would surely give more appreciation on him than you did with latendresse !!

Is there going to be a thread about this guy every day? Habs fans are going a little overboard to try to prove to the entire hockey world that they got a steal in the draft.

it's the reaction to all the detractor that said just after the draft that montreal had the worst draft ...

Playing like a first round pick means you're playing like someone who should have been drafted in the top 30, not necessarily like a #1 pick.

I'm sure he won't be as productive as Czerkawski or Kilger were for the Habs, but he'll just have to do. ;)

*sigh*

I knew this would happen the minute a French young kid played a good game...I knew the fans would jump all over him like he was the next Guy Lafleur and come to save hockey in Montreal.

He had ONE good preseason game. He is definately NOT playing in the NHL this year. I was at the game, and I'll tell you right now that he's not NHL ready. His skating IS an issue. Not in terms of speed, but in the sense that I saw him fall down like 6 times.
