Individual expected goals for. Basically the amount of goals Laine is expected to score based on the position he took his shots from, based on league-average finishing ability.

Laine exceeds that by a larger margin than any player in the league so that's something to take into account.

Thanks, that is interesting. Also pretty amazing, he's a really special talent. I'm a Leaf fan but Laine is one of my favourite players, he's such a cool personality in addition to being an amazing sniper, possibly going down as one of the greatest snipers in NHL history. I haven't even seen him play much but I'm definitely going to catch every playoffs game I can. I hope WPG makes it to the finals and if they play anyone other than Toronto, I hope they win.

A: There is no secret or hidden plan behind dividing it from subjective franchises, you are theorizing here because you want to cheat the vote. I doubt a marginal amount of people will vote agaisnt because they hate the Leafs, most people here have been civil and polite except for you.

What is stupid is to think the reasoning of the poll is stupid because it doesn’t fit your opinions and your biases... All the poll is for is for voters to simply vote properly and it’s pretty simple, no rocket science there.



As the OP I am obviously no boss or anything but thanks to all the fans who have went and voted properly(especially the Leafs and Jets fans), I thought there would be allot more guys trying to sway the vote on both sides I’m pleasantly surprised with the outcome so far, so thanks to those who voted correctly.

If there was a poll last year while Laine was hurt than you can link it, because I don’t recall there being one. Regardless, Laine just scored 40 goals and since then all you fanboys have started slithering out of your holes and can’t keep Matthews out of your posts, it’s pretty awesome at how shook you people are that you wait all this time for an opportunity to chest-thump, and do it while Matthews is injured.

I voted, simple, your the one who’s rattled because I pointed out that Matthews was having the far better season between the two at the time of his injury, your the one who’s quoting me.

No, it’s stupid. This is like making a poll pitting Mitch Marner against Jack Eichel and arguing Marner is better because he has more points, ignoring where they were at when Eichel was healthy and that his injury is the only reason Marner pulled ahead. It would also be pitting a C against a W. This is the same argument, except Matthews faces tougher comp and is way, way better defensively than Laine.

That model seems to be useless on laine... on others it seems to predict pretty well tho. Stamkos was a huge outlier on it tho and laine was an even greater. Probably outdid his xgf by twice the amount that stamkos outdid his.

Jet fan agreeing with almost everything here.

I take Matthews over Laine but I like to think Pate has at least proven to be quite close to Matthews. Matthews being a C and better two-way and at even strength tips the scales his way. Laine is absolutely dominant on the PP though, and may be the best goalscorer in the league already.

A It annoys you that we own Winnipeg's rink (You will hear "go leafs go!" chants, and a huge celebration whenever anything pro Leaf happens in the game) when we play there because;

B we are the largest market in the NHL and that annoys you because you are one of the smallest markets. And this is likely not going to change. As I do not see any point in time where Alberta (especially Winnipeg area's ) population ever exceeds SW Ontario, specifically Toronto. So to rebel against this;

C You make silly subjective polls, comparing anyone on your team against the largest, most popular team in an effort to try to gain recognition. "Hey look at us over here!"

We see you Winnipeg. You are doing well this year. But you are and will always be small fry. Just enjoy the ride this year and prey that your team can keep the talent together long term...k? God knows you deserve to at the least win a round or two in the playoffs and see some success.

This is exactly why I suggest only comparing our players against that of teams with comparable markets because at least then I know it's not due to some inferiority complex, but rather an honest desire to compare two players subjectively.

I honestly thought Ehlers was doing better than he was this year, surprised to see him having about the same numbers as Willie.

Matthews is the better and more complete player than Laine and thus this should go to the Leafs.

I don't really mind it being close because I think the case can be made, but the fact that it is a clear lead for Laine and Ehlers is a joke.

Ehlers=Nylander and there is NO GM that would take Laine over Matthews, Laine might be a slightly better goal scorer (although even that is debatable, but it can be given to him), but that's where it ends.
