Can't find a GIF, but anyone see Marcus Kruger's chicken **** home-plate slide into the crease against the Blue Jackets? No stick, just what the hell, think I'll throw my skate blades into the opposing goalie and see what happens.

That wasn't hockey.

Unbelievably, it didn't result in a penalty (interference), but a goal.

Thanks if anyone can find/make a GIF of that horse ****.

Anyway, Jackets win in the SO

I have to say, I don't like that play one bit. Damned lucky that the skates went flush into Bobrovsky's pad, because that had the potential to be really horrendous.

Strictly speaking this isn't GI because Kruger was following a rebound and the contact was incidental to his attempt to play the puck. But it's a pretty sketchy example of how that rule is supposed to work.

Huh? Thought it was, while very lucky, a pretty smart play. His right skate hit the loose puck while his left skate (not the blade) without much velocity just pushed the goalie.

Maybe this is an ignorant question, but if contact that is incidental to attempting to play the puck towards the goal is OK even if it is reckless and would result in a waived off goal if it actually succeeded in putting the puck into the net ... then what bars players from just going full speed into the goalie in an attempt to carry the puck straight into the back of the net? Isn't there some obligation to attempt to avoid the goalie while he's in the crease and you're playing the puck? How does intentionally sliding feet first into him (without even holding a stick), mesh with that?

Honest question - basically I thought intentionally (its pretty clear kruger's slide was intentional, not a fall or push) contacting the goalie while he's in the crease trying to make a save is goalie interference...

Extremely unsafe play imo and if that's going to be a new "thing" in the game then the rules need to be changed/re-worded before a goalie gets hurt.

He's lucky Bobrovsky was so chill about it...I can only imagine Ron Hextall or billy smith's reaction if someone did something like that. As a goalie myself I would've given him a blocker to the side of the head because one of those skates could've easily sliced someone(goalie or another player in the crease) up real bad.

That should never have been a goal. Sure, it was put in by another stick in the end, but that's not what is important here. You cannot jump with your two skates into the goalie like that. Even disregarding that move itself, the only reason why Smith was able to put the puck into the net was because Kruger pushed away Bobrovsky by jumping into him, you cannot score a goal by pushing the goalie away. If Kruger doesn't do that, the puck stays in front of Bobrovsky and there is no way Smith will be able to poke it in.

While technically not the same, there is a rule that says you can't score a goal by pushing the goalie into the net. Which sadly gets ignored quite often. This is pretty much the same thing, the puck gets stopped and never would have made it into the net if it wasn't for Kruger launching himself into Bobrovsky.

Here's the relevant rule:

69.6 Rebounds and Loose Pucks - In a rebound situation, or where a goalkeeper and attacking player(s) are simultaneously attempting to play a loose puck, whether inside or outside the crease, incidental contact with the goalkeeper will be permitted, and any goal that is scored as a result thereof will be allowed.

Strictly speaking he was attempting to play the puck (with his skates) so contact that he made with Bobrovsky was incidental. But it's reeeally pushing the spirit of that rule when you're talking about a skates-first slide into the crease.

I dunno. I think it was a good goal so I'm not bitter on that score, but I also think Kruger needs a warning phone call from the Department of Player Safety. If it's a quirky thing that never happens again, okay. If it starts to become a thing, it needs to be shut down ASAP.

While goal itself was legal I would have wanted to see penalty instead of goal counting. This reminds me of those failed sliding tackles in football (soccer for you americans) which hit the player.

This, too. But we were at the tender mercies of Tim Peel and Chris Rooney, so that would have been asking too much. :D

Should have the decency to remove his skates before going for the sliding tackle.
Hopefully this doesn't come more common. A hockey player should know better.

Good goal. A lucky one, but it's good.

Although that could have been dangerous. In this play it looks like nobody was in a bad position to be injured, but that isn't the case in every play.

Creative, but dumb. I think that's a good way to put it.

Why even have a rule against kicking a puck in if that is allowed?

U can kick a puck, just not into the net. Which he did not. He slid kicked the puck to the red line where Smith then tapped it into the net. So it was a good goal.

What the **** was that?!?! How God dam stupid can someone be?!? That can result in serious injury or, God forbid, something worse. These skates are too dam sharp to be doing anything like that. What a freakin moron.

How is that not a goalie interference?

Even if he had played the puck with his stick and pushed the goalie completely into his net he would have been called. I understand that he was aiming the puck but he also pushed the goalie which should be a minor.

I mean, nothing happened to Bobrovsky, so by the established "you can hit people with helmets as long as they don't bleed logic", probably not suspension worthy. But should never ever have been a good goal.

Yeah, the goalie could have been sliced right open if he wasn't wearing huge pads socks, shin pads, and was seven inches to the left. Close call.
