If Staal was a UFA this season, I can see some teams signing him for a 1 year, cheaper contract, used for their 3rd pair. I doubt he'd be sitting on a park bench. Giving Staal 20 minutes a game against the leagues best, and leading your team in short handed minutes is the problem. Staal can still play on a 3rd pair, but it's hard to justify just using him on a bottom pair with his current contract, and coaches seem to like his leadership.

Wouldn't Tampa automatically sign him?

Kovalchuk with 50% retention for Brendan Lemeuix, Brendan Smith and a 7th round pick. Gives the Rangers enough cap space to sign Deangelo to a bridge contract . And time to get a good return for Kreider.

interesting
but aside from other issues, Kovy is a 35+ contract

how easy will it be to flip him to a contender?
and how close is he to complete breakdown?

Smith I wanna get rid of, but at least I can bury him in the A.

One thing here ranger fans I want to point out its your fan asking for him not us trying to unload him. Anything potential trade with us retaining starts with a 1st round pick If ur adding a cap dump i would think your adding a under 23 prospect on a elc. I understand that's probably to much to ask but its the only way I would consider retaining cap space or adding a dump. Cap space has a price . Have a nice day.

Ranger "fan base" not asking for him.
A Ranger fan, possibly even as click bait, made the OP.
Most of NYR fan-base are not prioritizing "perfect 3rd/2nd line winger and power play specialist " for this year's team, which may be more competitive, but is not yet back in 'Winning is the only thing" mode.

I respect your point that LAK should not do anyone any favors, and deserve balance in any deal.
Just wont be with NYR.

As i wrote in the "Leddy for a Top 6 F" thread, there might be grounds from which to build a fair a deal with NYI,
Lou knows Kovy well, and Leddy could help LAK at LHD, which has been cited above by some LAK fan base as need.

Kovy to NYR in 2019 is the wrong idea at the wrong time.

I respect your point yes its only one fan but I have read more then one fan making it sound like La is trying to dump him which we are not. Kovy's issues last year is 95% coaching who for some reason wouldn't play him top 6 mins . There is not one la fan that can explain why. The other 5% is a injury. I would much rather hold on to him and see what he can do with a better coach. I also want him around to mentor Prohorkins in his first nhl season.

I have no problem keep Kovy at all. As for Leddy to be honest I would not do it. Yes he would help us this year a lot However he is also signed for 2 more years and in the next two year i would rather be playing Clague Anderson and or Bjornfot

100% agreed it was utilization that killed Kovalchuk. However he does not need to play top 6 minutes but instead sheltered offensive zone minutes and PP time. There sounded like there was interest in Kovalchuk from Boston at lat year's trade deadline. I wonder if there will be more if he has a better year and since he has one year less on his deal. I to am in no rush to move him, but if the offer was right sure would.

It’s literally one Ranger fan that asked for him, but sure.

1 guy does not constitute a fan base.
Pretty much every Ranger response was a no.

I am not sure I want Kovalchuk. But if Rangers wanted him this was a deal I think they could do.

If you read my response a few posts later the vast majority of ranger fans made it sound like it was king fans trying to dump him which we were not So my point was just that the idea come from a ranger fan not a king fan

Maybe edit "fan base" from your post. That way when someone reads it before your correction, they might not respond to it as several did.

Regardless, the point still stands. One, or even a select few fans don’t constitute or speak for an entire fan base.

It’s a point that gets lost on here way too often.

Is he over the hill enough for the Rangers to want him?
