If Staal is that much of a boat anchor, than I think the Kings would rather hold on to Kovalchuk, hope he has a nice season, and move him for a draft pick or two to another team. We don't need another Phaneuf.

Kovalchuk does have an NMC. I think he'd waive it for NYR if these teams came to an agreement.

I get this line of thought too, and I expect a bounce back from Kovalchuk. he was putting up good numbers before the coaching change last year

Did you ever read the title of a thread and just get so twisted that you wished pain upon the op because the premise of the post didn't take any reality into actual consideration?
Nah, me either.

I think I'd rather have Staal than Kovalchuk at this point. Pass from NYR. Cap doesn't work and if Kovi is the best piece coming back in a Kreider trade, we have some problems.

What would it take to get kovy to broadway? I think he's be a perfect 3rd/2nd line winger and power play specialist and mentor to our young Russians already here and the ones to come. Next season we should see panarin buchnevich and kratzov all making in the top 3 lines. These guys probably grew up with him on their walls.
What are some of LAs needs? Rangers are loaded in prospect depth . Kakko kratzov Fox are definitely not.available, I don't wanna see kreider go but he is rumored to be moved but he doesn't make sense to LA to me but any thoughts how rangers could end up trading for Ilya Kolvalchuk?
I think LA would also love to see him playing for the Rangers so a second would make it happen

kings retain some salary as well as send staal or if it's a big deal with kreider for kovy ++ and salary retained...
have you guys seen Tampa bay's roster? Money can always be moved to load a team
As others have said, we do not want a mid 30s decaying Kovy, esp for an in his prime Kreider. We have been going thru gyrations b'c mgmt concurs that an extended Kreider is the most valuable scenario, whether we keep him for production [assuming great chemistry w/Zib and the correct linemate] or we eventually trade him.
We are still in need of dumping excess to get down to a minimum core, so we can give most mins to that core.
Why go vs that and add an overpriced unproductive vet without some serious benefit to make it worthwhile.
Sorry OP, no possible justification for yer premise on this one.

Kings fan here.

We could actually use a left shooting dman to hold things down until our prospects develop. Is Staal that bad these days that he'd be considered a cap dump?

I'd consider Kovalchuk for Staal and a draft pick.

I would like to oblige you, but not possible atm b'c:
Staal has NMC full control, and he likes his CT digs.
Even if he were to waive, Kovy would not be the answer for NY.

If he were to waive, we could make him available at half and something acceptable for 2 years term remaining. I am open to other suggestions but likely that would be Staal at half and two 3rds for a conditional 7th at your end.

Staal in his brief prime was once the best pure shutdown defenseman in the league, with the reach/strength/adequate speed and intangibles to shut down other teams' top scorers.
However, concussions and various injuries including to eye [which must require adjustment for depth perception] have taken a toll and diminished him. We all wish him well, but had hoped he'd have taken LTIR when this happened. He has improved but obv. is not what he once was.

If you want All Star level experience, solid in technique, a good guy in the clubhouse and a top rate mentor who can play more but should get limited 3rd pair or 7th D placing, he is a fine stopgap for only 2 yrs which are reasonable to buy out if nec. due to sudden cap emergency or other. Beyond that, no.

And again, due to NMC, this is moot discussion.
Rangers should have bought out him, not Shattenkirk.
But it is what it is....

Don't expect a match but if you do, pls create another thread to keep on topic and explore Skjei to LA. Again, don't immediately see agreement on currency but I haven't considered it fully.

Kovy with salary retained for Namestinkov could be a good move for both teams.

Kings get out of Kovy's contract (partially) early and they get a younger player.

Vladdy hasn't worked out for Rangers and Kovy could be a better fit on Rangers with his goal scoring and experience he can bring.

Am I going crazy? Kovalchuk scored 16 goals and 34 points in only 64 games on a garbage Kings team, and most of those games were spent receiving third- or fourth-line minutes due to being in Desjardins’ doghouse (for no reason that fans could see).

At worst, he’s top six on the Rangers in goals scored last year. Put some productive linemates with him and watch him shine. What a god damn shame it was watching Kovalchuk’s creativity and excitement just be absolutely wasted on the talentless Kings they rolled him out there with.

Kovalchuk at 50% ($3.125 million) for Marc Staal at full price plus the Rangers’ top sixteen-protected first round pick would be my asking price.

Rangers gain cap space, a top six winger, and only lose a pick if they make the playoffs.

You are not crazy
but NYR dont want or need Kovalchuk, even more certainly not at risk of a high pick or good prospect.
NYR have their own messes to clean up,
Adding 35+year old W is not in the game plan

please let this mismatched idea fade away.

This really is not terrible considering but it is unlikely..........it's a move the Rangers don't really need to make and it goes against the grain of their rebuild.
Staal is likely to get bought out next summer by NY or the Rangers just ride it out on his final season. They have a ton of cap coming of the books the next 2 seasons and almost nobody currently under contract to resign. No reason to do anything with him if it is going to cost a 1st. Of course Staal would have to waive as well, not sure how likely that would be.

Nah, its still the guy that was lifting the cup at about the 3:40 mark.

My page was lagging to load and for a minute I thought you were going to have Nieves photoshopped on that. I'm not really disappointed :(

Kovalchuck has slowed down. I'm sure he could put up some more points playing with higher minutes but why would we do that when we have wingers we want to develop? Taking on 2 years of Kovi just doesn't make sense, even at 50%. We save a couple million off the cap but I'm not losing a 1st just to get rid of Staal at this point, even if we make the playoffs. I'm sure there would have to be a condition for if we don't make the playoffs. We're still looking to add assets regardless how successful we end this season. I don't think we need Kovalchuk and Staal isn't waiving to go to the current LA team with 2 years left on his contract.

Let me fix it for you ...Staal with 50% retained for Kovalchuk at full price plus your 1st pick top 16 protected would be my asking price. Ask yourself would you do this? that's the same answer you will get from the Rangers.

Stall is garbage. If he was a UFA this year he would still be sitting next to Phaneuf on a park bench. Kovy at 50% will net the Kings a way better return.

If Staal was a UFA this season, I can see some teams signing him for a 1 year, cheaper contract, used for their 3rd pair. I doubt he'd be sitting on a park bench. Giving Staal 20 minutes a game against the leagues best, and leading your team in short handed minutes is the problem. Staal can still play on a 3rd pair, but it's hard to justify just using him on a bottom pair with his current contract, and coaches seem to like his leadership.

I wouldnt have a problem with him in new york but what it would realistically take the kings would never do and if they did the entire front office should be fired.

Kovalchuk with 50% retention for Brendan Lemeuix, Brendan Smith and a 7th round pick. Gives the Rangers enough cap space to sign Deangelo to a bridge contract . And time to get a good return for Kreider.
