There has to be a point in time when he is free, correct? Kovalchuk was able to sign with anyone when he decided to come back.He can't go anywhere else. As a defected prospect due to the lack of a transfer agreement between the NHL and Russia, his rights are held by the Knights even after hitting the normal UFA age like Shiphimbackout did. The only advantage of waiting until then is that he can sign for any dollar amount and isn't constrained by entry level contract limits.
I hope he decided to play here. He could very well be another expansion draft steal like Theodore, Karlsson and Tuch.
