This deal is exactly the move that would work for all parties IMO. 1/2 is a bit much, but say 2.0 million per. Boston gets back a relatively young Lucic for 4.0 cap hit and only 2.5 cash hit for the balance of his deal, which is actually good value for him. If he turns it around and returns to 50 point territory the Oilers lose this deal. Lucic goes home to Boston and Klefbom has a value contract for 6 more years. The oilers get their PP defenceman with a young aggressive winger to replace Lucic.

I'm not sure why people think the Oilers would retain half on Lucic and get nothing of value in return.

Whether you like Lucic or not and I personally don't Lucic for 5 years at 3 million a year has significant positive value.

I don't see any reason why the Oilers would focus on Boston or trade a defenseman with him if they're retaining 3 million or even 2 million a year. There are going to be much better deals available under those circumstances than the ones in this thread.

Boston taking Lucic even at 50% is a favor to EDM. He isn't going to have a McDavid or Draisaitl to play with in Boston.

And he's not going to take ice time away from Debrusk to play with Krejci.

If we are taking Lucic, we are getting compensated for it.

If it's Lucic @3.5 and Nurse coming to Boston, you can have Krug and Heinen.

Even that hurts to give up. Boston really rolling the dice that Lucic is going to be serviceable on the 3rd line with a young unproven center.

Edmonton gets a cheaper, younger, controlled winger who will most likely put up more points than Lucic. And already has a great 2 way game. And an almost guaranteed top 5 pp by adding Krug.

Only way Boston wins this trade is if Nurse is able to take over for Chara when he retires.

Zaitsev might be as big a cap dump as Lucic right away here. The guy is brutal. Leivo has zero value and is just waiver fodder.

Retaining 2.5 mil on Lucic is completely pointless. Nurse is too big a piece to give up with that amount of retention.
