Proof of why players should not leave money on the table.

Tampa apparently consummated a trade with St.Louis for Shattenkirk that would be contingent on an extension. They had apparently offered him 7x7, but he turned it down because he wanted to play in one of his preferred destinations.

A similar thing happened with Vanek and the Islanders. He turned down what at the time was a monster contract (again 7x7) because he had a preferred destination in Minnesota.

Money isn't everything, but for short careers, that's a lot to leave on the table.

I keep saying this but the injury has to still be affecting Shatty. He hasn’t played very well and he doesn’t look the same. We had 1 game in 1 week so it seems like Quinn (who Shatty has a very long history with) benched him to give him the whole week off. He hasn’t been scratch worthy though he hasn’t been good. He was good last season though and he played every game injured

The "Hometown" discount I am sure he regrets now. He could have gotten 2-3 years longer on a deal elsewhere.

You would think that a high paid defenseman that can’t play defense could move the puck well, but he actually can’t. He also can’t skate.

Literally useless in 2/3 zones.
Shattenkirk is a pp specialist. The rest of his game sucks. I can't believe the Caps and Rangers fell for tgecShattenkirk hype.

From an outside perspective, everything about this situation seems fine.

Contract actually sort of makes sense for rebuild mode and sitting him sort of makes sense too.

The worst free agent signing by NYR since every other free agent signing by NYR.

So live your life to maximize every dollar you can possibly make when you're *only* going to make 45 million plus in your short career as it is?

Man, to live your life that obsessed by money, crazy people preach that and like that comment to me, but hey, different strokes for different folks, that's life I guess.

Always overrated, he showed his true colors when he went to the Caps and was playing horribly.

Not even saying it against Rangers fans either. I feel bad for you guys. All the Devils fans wanted him soooo bad and I was like wow you guys think this guy would save the team especially with a high cap hit? A poor defenseman.

Agree with this, the Leafs feasted on him in that first round playoff series

Is this just to wake him up? Orrrrrrr? Is this going to be a regular occurrence?

Hes far too good with the puck to be sitting.

Its without the puck where is superior lack of ability to play hockey is where the problem lies. Remember watching him on the Caps and thinking this a Dollar Tree version of Erik Karlsson with 1 arm and 1 eye missing. Not even worth 2 million a season.

Wherever a millionaire hockey player plays, he's going to have an incredibly high quality of life for him.and his family. Work life balance won't differ from team to team. Not to mention most players retire young enough (early 30s) that they can move where they want after retirement.

There's certain factors like weather, or pressure of fans and media (Toronto, Montreal), but ultimately when someone is making millions, there's not much difference between two cities.

These guys retire young and can also maintain residences in multiple cities. There's almost no rational reason to leave 10s of millions on the table. Maybe family proximity, but even that can be overcome (private airfare, relocating family) when someone makes 7M USD.

That has nothing to do with whether I believe someone should live their life to maximize every dollar.

I just think it’s so incredibly naive to think that money solves life problems like that and that “there’s not much difference between cities when someone is making millions.”

Can’t even remotely imagine a scenario where my son says “X City is offering me a lot but I hate the city, it’s far away from everyone, it’s not where I want to lay down roots, and I don’t like the team/management” and I tell my son “All cities are pretty much the same when you’ve got cash, so don’t leave anything on the table.”
