My buddy scouted for Mckeen's for a few years and I remember him telling me about the scouting reports he read about Laine pre draft. Basically a lot said he was an extremely gifted goal scorer with amazing quick release but was a player with very low hockey IQ and positioning and if he didn't have such an amazing shot he wouldn't play in the NHL.
Sounds like your buddy is a pretty terrible scout then. He's got plenty of weaknesses to pick on, skating being the most obvious, but hockey IQ is not one of them.
I’m curious to see what the reaction would be if this were Mitch Marner or Matthews. I feel like there would be very few “oh he’s only 20-21 years old he will figure it out” posts.
There's a big difference between a hockey market where people are knowledgeable about the game and actually enjoy cheering for their team, vs a market that's been a toxic wasteland of negativity and media pressure for decades. I feel bad for Leafs players; the fans, not so much.
There's also the fact the Jets are a good team regardless of Laine. He's never been seen as the saviour and we don't have the media shoving that narrative down our throats 24/7.
Last time I was in the Toronto airport I saw a bestseller book that had the Leafs trio on the cover and proclaimed them the next dynasty. Not a magazine. A hardcover book FFS. Not even on the shelves with the other books. They had an entire table covered in them. It's a fycking nightmare
