As we sit three months away from the Kentucky Derby, Byron King at Bloodhorse lists his "Derby Dozen." The list is placed in this thread mainly to get acclimated with some names and connections more so for those who don't follow on a regular basis.

These lists tend to fluctuate based on the most recent weekend of prep races. The "notes" are mine, the ranking is from the writer.

RankingHorseSireTrainer Note
1Essential QualityTapitBrad CoxThe champion juvenile male. He has not lost in three starts, all at Kentucky tracks including Churchill Downs. He was scheduled to race at Oaklawn this weekend (canceled).
2Fire At WillDeclaration of WarMichael MakerHe could enhance his resume Feb. 27 at Gulfstream.
3Life Is GoodInto MischiefBob BaffertHe is 2-for-2 lifetime and has yet to trail in either race. He has been compared to Authentic.

The 2-day Fasig-Tipton two day sale ended with 425 horses sold for $12.5 million. In 2020, 368 horses sold for $9,777,100 at the same sale.

One horse that piqued my interest at the sale was Hello Hot Rod who won a $100,000 feature race at Aqueduct 10 days ago. Trainer/owner Brittany Russell put the Maryland-bred up for sale. Originally a $10,000 purchase, the three-year-old colt was bought today for $335,000 and will be brought to Arizona for training and Turf Paradise for racing.

Luca Panici has a multiple fractured vertebrae. He is out indefinetly. From what I recall, he may have had a similar injury last year depending on the area. He was having a decent meet Hopefully, he recovers quickly.

An update. Luca Panici has responded to others on his Twitter account and thanked well wishers.

Nice gesture today by the host track as Gulfstream issued a "get well" through its simulcast feed.

His recent past:

Panici fractures vertebrae in spill

Panici’s agent, Kevin Meyocks, said Wednesday morning the 46-year-old jockey was resting comfortably and was scheduled to see a specialist later that day for a further prognosis.
-------------

This is the latest in a spate of riding-related injuries for Panici, who has ridden 724 winners in the U.S. since 2005 after moving here from his native Italy. He suffered a foot fracture in November 2019, a broken collarbone last February, then fractured ribs in April in yet another spill.

Panici hails from a renowned family of horsemen and won more than 500 races in Europe. Panici rode in his first Kentucky Derby last September when Sole Volante finished 11th.

Oaklawn has scrapped the 2/13-15 cards

Oaklawn Cancels Racing Feb. 13-15 Due to Winter Weather - BloodHorse

Due to the predicted winter weather expected in Hot Springs, Ark., over the next few days Oaklawn Park has canceled racing during its extended Presidents Day weekend, which would have included the $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3) and $250,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) Feb. 15. Brad Cox-trained champions Essential Quality and Monomoy Girl were set to make their respective 2021 debuts in those races.

Oaklawn has rescheduled three graded stakes and one listed stakes that were originally set for the canceled Feb. 13-15 cards. The Southwest, Bayakoa, and $600,000 Razorback Handicap (G3)—the latter originally scheduled for this coming Saturday—will take place the following Saturday, Feb. 20. The $150,000 Dixie Belle Stakes (originally on the Razorback undercard) and $150,000 Downthedustyroad Stakes (originally Feb. 20) will be run Sunday, Feb. 21.

Tampa Bay (Florida):

Beholder delivered a Bolt d'Oro filly. It was her fourth foal. She was previously mated with War Front, Curlin and Uncle Mo.

Her offspring:
  • 1. Q B One (Uncle Mo) is 3 years old and is supposedly close to making his debut.
  • 2. Karin With an I (Curlin) is 2 years old. She is yet unraced.
  • 3. Teena Ella (War Front) is a filly yearling.
  • 4. unnamed (Bolt d'Oro) is a filly foal.
Beholder is an 11-year-old daughter of Henny Hughes. She retired from racing in 2016. She won 18 of 26 starts with earnings of $6,156,600. She earned Eclipse Awards as the outstanding 2-year-old filly of 2012, 3-year-old filly of 2013, and older female of 2015 and 2016. Not too bad of a resume.

Aqueduct Racetrack (New York):
  • Handle: $8.2 million.
  • Race 9: Apex Predator (Dylan Davis/Mitch Friedman) won the finale at 4-to-1 but more notably recorded a win for the first time in his 23 lifetime starts.
  • Bill Mott is 27 1-5-4 at the meet. How is that possible? The Hall-of-Fame trainer is having a solid Gulfstream meet.
Laurel Park (Maryland):
  • Canceled: weather which included freezing rain, ice and snow.
Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Handle: $6 million.
  • No turf: Races were off the turf due to wet weather earlier.
  • Samy Camacho won the final two races on the card and took the lead in the riders' standings with 57 wins. Antonio Gallardo has 55 wins.
  • Brenda McCarthy trained the winner in the finale, her first win since September at Monmouth (NJ). She has had her training license since 1982 when she won her first race at Meadowlands (NJ).
  • Jon Arnett is 96 18-24-13 (19%/57%) during the meet, the first time the Iowa-based trainer has tried the track. He sent horses to New Mexico in the past, too. Good numbers.
Gulfstream Park (Florida):
  • Handle: More than $20 million bet.
  • Race 11: Mischevious Alex (Irad Ortiz. Jr./Saffie Joseph) won a reduced field of four in the $100,000 Grade 3 Gulfstream Park Sprint Stakes at 2-to-5.
  • Race 6: Leinster (Luis Saez/Rusty Arnold) won the Grade 3 $100,000 Gulfstream Park Turf Sprint. Leinster was a $75,000 purchase in 2017 and has earned over $764,000.
  • Rainbow 6: The total approached $7 million as the horses entered the gate. All winners collected $17,000+.
  • Corey Lanerie won twice today and extended his race day winning streak to four. He is about 12% at the meet and that is better than I thought he would do at this tough meet. Good for him!
  • Replay show:

Oaklawn Park (Arkansas):
  • Canceled: weather. The track will canceled into Monday's holiday card.
Fair Grounds Race Course (Louisiana):
  • Card: Six of the 13 races were stakes including a Kentucky Oaks and a Derby preview.
  • Turf: Only two races 9 and 11 -- were held on the turf which played soft today. Some races were switched to dirt.
  • Race 7: Just Might (Colby Hernandez/Michelle Lovell) won the $100,000 Colonel Power Stakes.
  • Race 9: Dalika (Miguel Mena/Albert Stall, Jr.) won the $100,000 Albert M. Stall Memorial Stakes and withstood an objection from the fourth place finisher. The winning trainer, who was understandably emotional following the win, is the son to the race's namesake. The winning jockey said of the winner “She’s a German-bred so they run over soft goings over in Europe.”
  • Race 10: Maxfield (Florent Geroux/Brendan Walsh) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Mineshaft Stakes. The winning horse is 5 5-0-0 lifetime -- including 3-for-3 in graded stakes -- and was considered a strong candidate for last year's Kentucky Derby prior to a cannon bone injury. He also missed the Breeders' Cup Juvenile in 2019 due to a foot injury. Maxfield is owned by the powerhouse stable of Godolphin who have yet to win a Kentucky Derby.
  • Race 11: Captivating Moon (Marcelino Pedroza/Chris Block) was the longest shot on the board at 43-to-1 and circled the field to win the $150,000 Grade 3 Fair Grounds Stakes on a soft turf. Pedroza won a graded stakes for the first time in his 11-year career. The 6-year-old horse paid $89 to win and topped $1 exactas for $465, $1 tris for $3,605.45 and $.10 supers for $4,095.73.
  • Race 12: Clairiere (Joe Talamo/Steve Asmussen) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Rachel Alexandra Stakes and with it earned 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Oaks. The daughter to Curlin was out for the first time since November and improved to 3 2-1-0.

  • Race 13: Mandaloun (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) was sent off the favorite and won the $400,000 Grade 2 Risen Star Stakes. With the victory, the connections earned 50 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The son to Into Mischief is 4 3-1-0 lifetime and won a graded stakes for the first time. Well over $2 million bet into the race.

Delta Downs (Louisiana):
  • Canceled: February 15th's card will be canceled due to inclement weather. The track was not scheduled to run today or Sunday.
Golden Gate Fields (California):
  • Race 8: Rombauer (Kyle Frey/Michael McCarthy) won the $100,000 non-graded El Camino Real Derby and with it earned 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. Rombauer won for the second time in five starts and snapped a 3-race skid.
  • Handle: More than $3 million.
Santa Anita Park (California):
  • Race 8: Bob Baffert finished 1-2-3 in the Grade 2 $200,000 Santa Monica Stakes... and he didn't have the favorite who finished seventh out of ninth. Merneith (Edwin Maldonado) at 9-1, Golden Principal (Mike Smith) at 5-1 and Qahira (Joel Rosario) at 3-1 completed the $.50 tri which paid $108.50.
  • Race 9: Umberto Rispoli won the finale. The rider took the lead in the jockey standings at the meet with his 27th win. Juan Hernandez has won 26 times.
  • The $.20 Pick 6 Jackpot: Each winner collected $32,000+.
  • Doug O'Neill won twice and with the victories passed Bob Baffert as the winningest trainer -- to date -- at the meet. O'Neill has 15 wins, Baffert 14.
  • Handle: $11,000,000+

Due to space limitations, key races in the above post are here:

El Camino Real Derby

Santa Monica Stakes:

--------------------------------

Oaklawn has re-scheduled previously re-scheduled dates.

The $750,000 Southwest Stakes (G3), a Kentucky Derby prep, the $250,000 Bayakoa Stakes (G3) and the $600,000 Razorback Handicap (G3) will be moved from the re-scheduled date of Saturday, Feb. 20 to Sunday Feb. 21. Weather again could be a hindrance. The 20th just got slightly less hectic with the schedules from across the globe.

Monomoy Girl is expected to race in the Bayakoa. She is 15 13-2-0 with $4.4 million earned and has won 10 of her past 11 starts.

The $150,000 Dixie Belle Stakes and the $150,000 Downthedustyroad Stakes, scheduled for Feb. 21, have been moved to Feb. 20.

Laurel canceled racing today (Sunday) due to track conditions resulting from cold and ice.

Laurel is scheduled to run Monday but my guess is that could change.

Many major tracks are scheduled to operate tomorrow on holiday Monday but those who will not race are the two Florida tracks.

Aqueduct and Parx are east coast tracks that are slated to race tomorrow as of now.
