Hawthorne hopefully can build a stronger more successful racing venture out of all this. As mentioned, just on aesthetics, the simulcast feed is one of the easiest on the eyes and that is a starter.

Hawthorne Opens Sportsbook with PointsBet (thoroughbreddailynews.com)

Hawthorne Race Course and PointsBet have been approved by the Illinois Gaming Board to open the state's first off-track and non-casino sportsbook beginning Jan. 27. The newly remodeled Club Hawthorne in suburban Crestwood is part of Hawthorne's off-tracking betting (OTB) network, and is the first of three such OTB locations that will open under Illinois' sports betting law.

“Hawthorne is the only gaming company in the Chicagoland area that is able to open sportsbooks at off-track and non-casino locations, so this is an opportunity on which we focused a lot of energy and investment,” said Tim Carey, president and CEO of Hawthorne Race Course. “We completely remodeled the space to create the best sports viewing and sports betting destination in the State.”

The PointsBet Sportsbook at Club Hawthorne will also feature exclusive retail-only betting promotions and sweepstakes. Current health safety protocols provide for limited seating capacity which will be available on a first-come, first-serve basis; however bet-and-go services for cash wagering are available. The sportsbook will open from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on weekends.

Into Mischief broke the all-time yearly record for production as a sire as his offspring earned over $22.5 million.

The prior record was established by Tapit in 2016 at $19.9 million.

TV schedule for the week which includes the Eclipse Awards tomorrow (Thursday):

From my post a few days ago which includes the three finalists for each category...

JOCKEY: The top two jockeys won't be universal but should be close to it. Joel Rosario deserves more respect. He has settled into a nice groove the past three years and has upped his game in 2020 perhaps more so than any year. The maturation has shown and combined with his physical strength has produced. Irad Ortiz, Jr., is the obvious pick. The accolades are not needed since his successes speak volumes. I don't agree with the selection of John Velazquez, he would barely crack my top ten but some will advance shinier objects -- he is 5th in money earned which can't be avoided but also approximately 70th in total wins. There are too many jocks who have toiled to greater extents and in the cases of my top four each nearly had double the mounts.

TRAINER: One pundit picking Brad Cox is worthy. He has been my pick though not the upset contrarian I thought. People are beginning to recognize his skillset. Chad Brown is the defending winner and is stellar on turf and layoffs. Bob Baffert on dirt and in big games is brilliant. But Cox is the worthy recipient despite maybe not having the name recognition of the others. He clinched the deal at the Breeders' Cup. Steve Asmussen led 2020 in various categories but still is a step behind the others.

APPRENTICE: As far as Apprentice of the Year, Alexander Crispin as the top bug surprises me a bit but Laurel has a competitive riders colony. The Ohio-based Yarmarie Correa is someone with whom I am not too familiar. Charlie Marquez was doing well at Laurel but in a tougher league in New York is still learning. He is 17 or 18 years of age. Luis Cardenas in New York is someone who would fill my ballot of those with whom I am familiar. While I don't have a strong preference for top bug, any Laurel jock getting nominated gets my vote.
We'll find out later this month.

For selected categories, my picks (only three can be nominated):

Jockey of the Year:

1. Irad Ortiz, Jr.
2. Joel Rosario
3. Tyler Gaffalione (by a whisker over Saez)
4. Luis Saez
5. Florent Geroux
6. Flavien Prat

Trainer of the Year:

1. Brad Cox
2. Bob Baffert
3. Chad Brown
-------------------------
Eclipse_trophy_615x400.jpg

Nominees are official..

Well the voters selected Irad Ortiz, Joel Rosario and John Velazquez as the finalists. I stick to my guns on that matter.

Also, though four trainers seemed to separate themselves from the rest, Steve Asmussen did make the cut and defending winner Chad Brown was left on the outside
Winners will be announced in a ceremony beginning at 8:00 pm ET on January 28.

The 2020 Longines World Racing Awards

Ghaiyyath was named Horse of the Year for 2020. The Godolphin horse, purchased for the equivalent of $1.1 million in 2015, won four of five races in 2020 mostly in Europe. Authentic finished second.

Frankie Dettori was named Best Jockey of the Year. Dettori is the only four-time winner of the title.

Tonight is the North America awards show.

  • Todd Pletcher is $134,000 away from $400 million lifetime. He is the leading training in North America history in purses earned. Pletcher has two running in New York on Thursday but won't reach the feat there. He likely will cross the threshold on Saturday's large Gulfstream card. He also has two entered at Sam Houston (Texas) on Sunday.
  • Danny Gargan won with his lone starter today and has won with six of his past eight entered.
  • Presque Isle (Pennsylvania) plans to operate 50 racing days in 2021 beginning July 5.
  • Canceled: Aqueduct (NY), Santa Anita (CA) and Los Alamitos (CA) all canceled racing for Friday due to weather concerns.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Eric Cancel rode three winners.
  • Handle: $3.6 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr., who is the favorite to win Jockey of the Year for 2020 tonight, won four times (8 4-1-2). His brother Jose won once. Together, they were 12 5-2-3 today.
  • Danny Gargan won with his lone starter today and is 32 14-4-6 (44%/75%).
  • Handle: $7.4 million.
  • Replay show:

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • James Graham (45 wins), Mitchell Murrill (43 wins) and Adam Beschizza (41 wins) are hooked into a tight battle for leading rider this meet.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Canceled: Winds and excessive cold.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: Over $4 million bet.
  • Antonio Gallardo served the second day of a 2-day suspension but he is expected to ride a high volume of horses today. He is three wins shy of 2,000 in his career.

  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. won four more times. He was 6 4-1-0 today and went 14 8-2-2 the past two days.
  • Race 3: Sage Canyon (Luca Panici/Alfredo Velazquez) was by far the longest shot on the board and entered the stretch 6th but driving; however, he pulled ahead with a dramatic finish and paid $64 in victory.

  • Handle: $9.6 million.
  • Replay show:

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Florent Geroux went 4 3-1-0 in a continuation and is now 22 10-2-3 (45%/68%) at the meet. He is 77 30-16-10 (39%/73%), almost unthinkable numbers, in a brilliant start to 2021.
  • David Cohen is struggling with a 26 1-2-3 record this meet. He had successful numbers the past couple of years including the most wins at the meet in 2019.
  • Steve Asmussen and Brad Cox have hot barns at the meet, not unexpected of course.
  • Handle: Over $4 million.

  • Race 11: Greatest Honour (Jose Ortiz/Shug McGaughey) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Holy Bull Stakes and romped to victory with a widening stretch run. The win earned the connections 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The colt is 5 2-1-2 lifetime.
  • Race 10: White Frost (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Sweetest Chant Stakes.
  • Race 9: Zaajel (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Forward Gal Stakes and with it earned 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Oaks. Zaajal, owned by Shadwell Stable, is 2-for-2 lifetime.

  • Trainers: 12 races each won by a different trainer.
  • Replay show:

  • Race 7: Medina Spirit (Abel Cedillo/Bob Baffert) wired the field and held on by a neck to win the $100,000 Grade 3 Robert B. Lewis Stakes. With it the connections received 10 points towards entry into the Kentucky Derby. The horse was purchased for only at $35,000 and is now 3-2-1-0 lifetime.

And with Saturday's numbers officially processed, Todd Pletcher has now earned $400,002,310 and reached the mark during racing at Gulfstream. He is the first trainer in North America racing to pass $400 million earned lifetime.

  • Mike Luzzi (New York) and Lane Luzzi (Texas) rode in races at the same time. I hope the family had multiple viewing options. Both earned paychecks in races today. The father is 17 4-3-3 (24%/59%) in 2021 after a dismal 2020.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $6 million.
  • Race 8: Hello Hot Rod (Trevor McCarthy/Brittany Russell) wired the field in the $100,000 stakes feature. The 3-year-old colt was purchased for $10,000 in 2019 and has already earned $113,000+. Maryland connections were sent off at near-even money in a short field. Russell has hit the board 64% of the time this year. Her hotness has cooled from the staggering 2020 numbers but the ITM mark is a personal best to date.

  • Married jockeys: The issue involving recently married Trevor McCarthy and Katie Davis, jockeys normally based in Maryland, as to not being allowed to ride against each other in the same race, has been mollified in that they have to be coupled as an entry. Thus, if they do race together, it is one betting option. The New York rule seemed to specify "living under the same roof" and if accurate any other family relationship (example a son/daughter who lives with his/her parents) would be held to the same limits.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Canceled: Snow forecasted.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Hector R. Diaz won three times on four mounts.
  • Antonio Gallardo won twice and has 1,999 career wins in North America. Next win: #2,000.
  • Handle: $4.2 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: Over $12 million.
  • Jockey repeats: Edgard Zayas had a natural hat trick as part of a 4-win day. Irad Ortiz, Jr, (3 wins) and Junior Alvarado (2) also won multiple times. The opener (Jose Ortiz) and closer (Tyler Gaffalione) were the only races in which a rider won just once today.
  • Todd Pletcher added two wins to his Hall of Fame career.

Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $4.6 million.
  • Ricardo Stantana, Jr. - Steve Asmussen won consecutive races as a team.
  • Walter De La Cruz-William Martin teamed to win twice on two prices including a 21-to-1 shot.
Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • James Graham added three wins to his meet lead which stands at 51.
Sam Houston (Texas):
  • Handle: Over $5.3 million which set an all-time record for any racing day since the track opened in 1994.
  • Card: Six of the ten races were stakes and four of them held purses of $100,000+ in the annual Houston Racing Festival.
  • Race 5: Fast Boat (Miguel Mena/Joe Sharp) won the $100,00 Pulse Power Turf Sprint Stakes. The victory gave the rider his sixth straight winning mount. He was 4 4-0-0 at Fair Grounds on Saturday.
  • Race 7: Palazzi (Declan Carroll/Mark Casse) won the $200,000 Texas Turf Mile Stakes.
  • Race 8: Letruska (Jesus Castenon/Fausto Gutierrez) won the $300,000 Grade 3 Houston Ladies' Classic. Letruska is 16 12-0-1 lifetime which includes a perfect 6 6-0-0 mark in Mexico where she began her career.
  • Race 9: Spooky Channel (Julien Leparoux/Brian Lynch) won the $200,000 Grade 3 John B. Connally Turf.

Golden Gate (California):
  • Favorites up: Six wins in eight races.
  • Handle: $1.8 million.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Over $7 million.
  • Riders: Juan Hernandez (25 wins) and Umberto Rispoli (21 wins) both won today and are 1-2 in the riders' standings.
  • Trainers: Doug O'Neill (12 wins), Bob Baffert (11) and Peter Miller (10) are 1-2-3 in the trainers' standings.

The $20 million Saudi Cup is February 20. The world's richest race will likely have three entries from the US including Knicks Go, Charlatan and Tacitus.

Jose Lezcano is expected to have shoulder and knee surgery which could put him out of action until April. I thought he was riding oddly if not tentatively. Perhaps the injuries were chronic, similar to Javier Castellano. Not related to a specific moment, just something that erodes joints.
