It's actually much closer than you might suspect. Patches is a great player, as is JVR, but both sides can (and obviously do) pick and choose statistics that paint their guy in a better light.
The sportsnet article says that playing with Desharnais is the reason why Pacioretty gets the nod over JVR... but it fails to take into account just how bad the Leafs were when it came to getting scoring chances compared to the Habs last year.
- We were dead-last in our ability to direct the puck to the other net and as a result, JVR played many more shifts in his own end compared to Pacioretty.
- When JVR was on the ice, the play transitioned more to the offensive end compared to when Pacioretty had the puck, where the puck would manage to end up back in the Habs' end.
- Pacioretty, while playing with Desharnais, also had great puck distributors in Subban and Markov more often than when JVR had Gardiner, Phaneuf or Rielly. In this case, one group is better than the other in affecting the team's offense.
