With the increase in CAP hit I think it's quite fair for JVR. Lock him up in his prime years.

It's very reasonable. Verging on team-friendly, at least in terms of cap, maybe less so in term.

He's looking for something similar to the deals Ladd/Lucic/Eriksson/Okposo/Backes signed a year ago. Its not an unreasonable ask especially considering the cap will be going up but I see the Leafs walking away from that. Just going off of my gut but I get the feeling when Babcock was complimenting the Lightning on moving past certain players, that he was referring to JVR as being one of those players.

My question is, we usually see the ask being a lot higher than what they get. Look at other players, we usually hear "oh they want x" and fans go " No way they get that wow". Then they sign a cheaper deal. I can only hope this is the case, IF he wants to stay a Leaf.

No doubt he could get more than that if he went to UFA. He's one of the best players in the NHL around the net.

It’s close to fair for both sides. He’s one of the more consistent goal scorers. Good for 25-30 goals a year.

Yup. Averages 30 goals 30 assists per 82 games over his entire tenure as a Maple Leaf, consistently healthy outside of one year, etc. With the way the cap has been moving, his age, etc, I think 6x6 is a very fair ask and probably a bit of a hometown discount.

The term is a tad worrisome.

At his current production that's a fair deal. However, can he maintain or stay close to it at the age of 33-35?

Ryan Callahan 6 x 5.8
Brandon Dubinsky 6 x 5.85
Kyle Okposo 7 x 6
Milan Lucic 7 x 6
Loui Eriksson 6 x 6

Doesn't sound like too high of a number in comparison.

How many of those look like good deals ~2 years in? It's a risky age to give 6 year deals of top line money to a guy.

Leafs would be almost guaranteed to be overpaying JVR for ~3-4 years of the contract. Keep in mind the only thing he brings to the table is offence. He's quite bad defensively 5 on 5, doesn't play the PK, doesn't bring a punishing physical game, etc. So the likely decline of his offence in his early 30s is a big detriment to his value to a team.

Term and money are good. Doesn't sound as if there is much to think about. Sign the guy.

Seems absolutely fair. 2nd best goal scorer in Toronto, it would be foolish not to sign him to that.

The cap hit is reasonable. Just don't know how it breaks down in the Leafs future cap management.

If he’s willing to do 6x6. See if you can bring him down to 6x5.75. Couldn’t hurt. With a 15 team NTC.

The ask is absolutely fair. JVR will probably be one of the best UFAs of the 2018 class, which means that he should not have to accept anything less than that.

I think he gets over payment from another NHL team as a free agent. Don't know if he wants to stay with the Leafs, which I would think he does, but that's still a steal because I would imagine he could get 8 years at $7.5M per season from a bad team.
