Earlier this summer, I threw the possibility out that Williams could take the first half of the season off, returning fresh for a stretch drive and possibly playoffs. It seemed like a win-win, but the big hole in it is the captaincy...Williams' leadership was a major reason that the Canes did so well in 2019, so the team risks taking a step backward at the outset of the season without him. Not a foregone conclusion, but still a big risk.

Then again, maybe that's by design. He sits out here at the beginning, and if the team struggles and needs a shot in the arm, he returns and attempts to work his magic. Think Sean Hill in Dec 2001. If they succeed without him, great...he stays retired and watches them like a proud father.

It's not totally inconceivable, anyway.

Washington, DC.
This is weird. But he did look pretty out of sorts end of the playoffs.
Yeah, he definitely seemed worn down by the late season run and was pretty much dead in the Boston series. That might be part of the thought process for playing a half season. A full season plus playoffs wore him down too much, but if he could stay fresh into the playoffs by avoiding the early part of the grind, he'd still be able to contribute when it matters most.

Justin Williams was 'The Captain' that all his team-mates looked up to.
Is it possible for him to come back at the 'Trade Deadline?'
Absolutely!!

How much does Montreal have to offer to get him sign with them?

Justin William's Decision
by
Matt Karash | Sep 2, 2019 | Canes Chronicle, Daily Cup of Joe, On The Beat
As this situation crept into and past August, it became increasingly obvious that this (not playing at least) would ultimately be the result. After an arduous regular season with three full months of playoff-ish pressure followed by three playoff series with 15 more games, Williams was no doubt fully spent both emotionally and physically. I actually think that the Torey Krug game against the Bruins maybe showed him hitting a wall after spending everything he had. At the beginning of the summer, I would have pegged the odds of a return at 60 percent and left them there through mid-July. But at the point where most of the free agency settled, I think the probably of a Justin Williams return inched downward by the day to the point where I would have pegged it at 20 percent or less last week. Williams’ words in the press release seem to show a player who had not yet accepted retirement as the next step but who had very clearly not found what it took to start the 2019-20 season. Though like everyone else, I would have preferred an earlier decision, I actually have a ton of respect for Williams today. Many players would have taken the $4 million and prepared to do their best. And at a bare minimum Williams would have been a reasonably productive middle forward who was a positive in the locker room. But Williams knows what 100 or 110 percent is and what it requires and that is the level that he holds himself too. So it makes complete sense that he would pull up short of collecting another paycheck and being good enough.

Three co-captains sound like a winner idea.

That's an intentional misrepresentation of what I said, which given that English isn't your first language, is impressive, but still not helpful. I think we treat the situation like JW is injured. You wouldn't replace a captain if he was injured, right? But every lineup card has to have a C and two As identified on it.

If this is just a case of Justin not wanting to play part of the season, I could see them holding the C for him, but I wouldn't like it. If Justin is really not sure he wants to come back, then I think Rod probably knows that is the case and he will name a new captain (it will be Aho) during camp.

I honestly took it that you suggested that we would, instead of 1+2 spear formation, go for 0+3, very short trident.

I think it's not a misrepresentation at all -- because whatever you think the rationale is, the result is the same. It's exactly the same "co-captaincy / non-captaincy" for which everyone absolutely pilloried Pastor Bill.

This is false, right? The Hurricanes have had plenty of lineups without a "C" in the past. It's possible that they had a "C" on the lineup card buy an "A" on their jersey, but I would've guessed that not to be the case.

Honest question, is the team able to hire Williams on as a coach or front office personnel for the time being? Or does he have to officially "retire" as a player first?

To be fair, it's slightly different. The 3-A approach is pretty typical in the NHL these days, going back to the Bobby Orr era Bruins. The idea of a "home captain" and "road captain" was a Peters era spin that I've never seen on any other team.

I like the Mad Maxesque quality in 'road captain' though.

... and now I question if the name of the very Braveheartian Scots' Celts' elite troop 'woad raider' in AoE II is actually a play on 'road warrior'.
