Would not surprise me due to Krug's reaction there being a muscle/ligament tear, broken bone, or fracture.

the slash on Krug didn't look like much, but the stick was like a fulcrum and all the force was on the thin end of the blade
from what I could see it looked like it came up under the glove on the inside where the thumb is
all that force right around the base of the thumb if it hit the wrong spot makes me think fracture, maybe the metacarpal or one of the joints on either side
