I don't think the Leafs are trying to rip anyone off. Negotiations aren't about trying to rip players or other teams off, it's about making a fair deal. Nobody knows what the future of the NHL holds. To use today's salary compensation in discussions for tomorrow doesn't work. Is there going to be a lock-out that crushes salaries down? Will the Cap go up? Really it could of come down to the Leafs and Matthews both coming to the conclusion there's not currently enough information to make a fair deal for either side that far off in the future, they shook hands at that.
I think a HUGE overlooked part when it comes the Toronto Maple Leaf organization, they are developing players. This isn't the `80's where some pimple-nosed kid is thrown on the ice without a clue and gets completely torn up. Prospects are being developed in the system. Young players like Matthews, they're not being thrown out for 22 minutes per game to win now. Almost all fan criticism I see is about coaching is about the 'now', not the development or destination. Matthews is getting ice-time and situations based on his development and maturing of a player. Some teams? Yes they would be throwing him out there, and he'd be scoring like crazy with the extra ice-time. But since Matthews has been in the league, he's a +30 and Malkin is a +16. Hyman in that time has a better +/- then Crosby. Yes there may be some more development in their scoring abilities, but the real path to become champions is going to be smart two-way play. If the Leafs wanted more offense from Matthews, they know they could just give him more ice-time. They know he has one of the best points/60 in the league, and they're still trying to make him a better player.
