You look at who they hired, and what their immediate future is, it’s honestly the right thing to do. Why pay an RB when you’re not going to be good? Unless Richardson takes an incredible leap as a rookie.

Taylor has made $6.3 million through 3 seasons ($7.8 mill was the value of his 4 year rookie contract but with extra performance money, his upcoming season 4 was worth $4.3 mill, which would take his 4 year rookie contract to $10.6 mill which would be only $1.6 mill less than the $12.1 mill that Josh Jacobs has made through his 4 year rookie deal. Taylor was pick 41 and Jacobs picks 24 in successive drafts.

Taylor is a workhouse with 860 touches in 3 seasons, with 7 games missed over that time. And like Barkley, he was also a workhouse back at Wisconsin.

Indy needs a run game if they are starting AR. So, that's the leverage point that Taylor is banking on.

Will he at some point hold out? This would be the season to do it if he is trying to secure a second contract.

Honestly, I wouldn't ever give a RB a second contract. Luckily the Rams don't seem inclined to do that anyways after the Gurley debacle (we waived Henderson mid-season because we knew we weren't signing him and wanted to give our other RBs the snaps.) Don't anticipate us signing Akers either

Agreed.

This isn't the 1980's. This is a passing league now and the only RB's worth paying, if any, are those that are elite on passing plays.

Irsay had back-to-back generational quarterbacks, and nowadays you couldn't pay either of them to show up at a Colts function.

It's more of a surprise that there are players in demand that don't want out.
That's a massive blow to the organization when your faces of the franchise don't want to have anything to do with the organization.

Irsay is 64, so that's not old. He has 3 daughters and 10 grandkids. All 3 daughters are part owners of the team already. So, the team with remain with the family moving forward. Just a matter of when Jim is no longer involved in day to day operations.

I'm fine with that strategy, but also considering how grueling and taxing on the body the NFL is, the teams should then let the RB go and hit the market or trade them if they are not going to sign them. Rather than tagging them.

Should draft a RB each year as you never know who is going to step up and run with the rock when the opportunity presents itself. Plenty of day 2 guys who were expected to take over flaundered when given the chance, while some day 3 guys ran with their chance when the opportunity presented itself.

This allows you to let your RB1 leave when their contract expires.

Send him to Denver, or Houston , people gotta learn the grass isn't always greener. God I'm an ass hole lol.
Not like Indy is a SB contender at the moment.

RBs need to make the money asap. There are not going to be many RBs who crack $50 mill in career earnings at this rate.
Cook is at $32 mill. Is he going to get $9 mill per over 3 years or $6 mill per over 3 years to hit $50 mill? Mixon at $32.7 mill and redid his deal to get $11.5 mill in total over the next 2 seasons. Would still leave him $7 mill short of $50 mill. Kamara is at $32.3 with $11 mill for 2023. Still short over $6 mill. Fournette is at $35 mill and not signed. Barkley at $38 mill and getting $10 mill this year so he’s basically a lock to hit $50 mill.

CMC, Zeke, Henry after this season will all be over $50 mill.

So Taylor has maybe 4 good years left to make his money based on when the others either got cut or had to redo their contracts.

Irsay is one of those incompetent legacy owners who is only where he is due to inheriting the team from his father. Mike Brown being another example.
Agreed. He’s only 64. So more likely than not he’s going to be around on a day to day basis for upwards of another decade. Jones and Kraft and 80 and 82, but their children are heavily involved in the operations of the team.

Sounds like Irsays daughters are too but not on the football operations. All on the business side.

Faking like Ramsey did on the Jags
What is odd is that the colts with AR on a rookie deal are in a position where they can afford to pay him. And paying him isn’t something astronomical like even paying for a WR2. It’s like $23/24 mill in guaranteed money which is like $1-2 mill more than the tags and can even offer incentives for him to hit to get an extra $2 mill.
