People do realize Gaudreau played at a near ppg except for an awful stretch around November?
Calgary as a team had an awful start, which was made more prominent by a shortened season.
Gaudreau already bounced back in Calgary. Even his playoffs was fine. Calgary played a series against the best shut down team in the league, and Johnny had little support once Tkachuk was out.
There is a large cohort of HF users who have been rooting for Gaudreau to fail since he entered the league. This is because so many of them had him pegged as nothing more than an AHL all star or PP specialist. They were so sure that a player of his size and build could never be an effective NHL'er.
And now that they've been proven to be embarrassingly wrong, they look for every opportunity to discredit him.
After his sophomore season, where he finished 6th in scoring as a 22 year old with 78 points (after a rookie season that saw him pile up 64 points in his final 75 games), tons of people were betting on him to "come back to earth" as a 50 point player.
This happened again after his 99 point season (though to a lesser extent). They seem to come out of the wood work when he has a bad playoff series, even though he was actually pretty good against Dallas (especially in the last 3-4 games when Tkachuk went down).
He'll rebound again, but those same people will make up the same excuses for why he's successful.
