How did Edmonton get better? How did Vancouver get better? Edmonton won't have their best defenseman and picked up a bottom 6 center and a PP specialist. I don't think they're better. Vancouver lost offense and goaltending and stayed about the same on the blueline. I would tend to agree with you that we took a small step backwards on defense, Hamonic was our worst defenseman last year, but Brodie was one of our 3 best. Our depth looks slightly better and our goaltending is better too. Of the 3 teams you mentioned Calgary improved the most.

You just answered your own question. Those were 2 things the Oilers needed badly...

They need an offensive d-man. Barrie is low risk, high reward.

Bear, Larsson, Barrie is a solid group of RHD no matter how you spin it or order pairings. Klefbom and Nurse on the left side is good as well.
Well the big issue is the fact that Klefbom is likely out for the season/most of the season so Nurse or Barrie is their #1D entering the season. No matter the RHD depth only having Nurse down the left isn't great

They needed a bottom 6 center sure. I can agree with that. But I'd say they needed one who is good defensively and on draws. How does a near record setting PP need a PP specialist? They needed a 5 on 5 specialist. They destroyed everyone in the league on special teams last year but got their heads caved in 5 on 5.

Oilers needed a PP specialist after having the leagues best PP, and one of the only reasons they were remotely close to being a playoff team in the regular season?

Just about every Canadian team had a good to great offseason. Really liked what Ottawa and Edmonton did. Vancouver had some changes but they were mostly tradeoffs and Montreal retained their core and solidified the team for the next few years while bolstering goaltending (not sure that was needed). Toronto added a lot of veteran experience and leadership and some grit. Winnipeg only team that didn't really do much. Calgary got their MUCH needed goaltender and...went through some pretty major changes on defense but should have a solid Top 4....can their scoring rebound CONSISTENTLY?

Good offseason although WPG too quiet for my liking considering they need some things

Gaudreau may need a change of scenery to regain his all star form. Send him somewhere down South.

Doubt it; Kane had a similar year in 11/12, Nylander had one last year, Ovi has had a few down years. He will bounce back and a change of scenery is not what is needed for him to do so.
I believe he can bounce back with Calgary.
He's too talented of a player not to. Certainly no guarantees either way.

People do realize Gaudreau played at a near ppg except for an awful stretch around November?

Calgary as a team had an awful start, which was made more prominent by a shortened season.

Gaudreau already bounced back in Calgary. Even his playoffs was fine. Calgary played a series against the best shut down team in the league, and Johnny had little support once Tkachuk was out.

There is a large cohort of HF users who have been rooting for Gaudreau to fail since he entered the league. This is because so many of them had him pegged as nothing more than an AHL all star or PP specialist. They were so sure that a player of his size and build could never be an effective NHL'er.

And now that they've been proven to be embarrassingly wrong, they look for every opportunity to discredit him.

After his sophomore season, where he finished 6th in scoring as a 22 year old with 78 points (after a rookie season that saw him pile up 64 points in his final 75 games), tons of people were betting on him to "come back to earth" as a 50 point player.

This happened again after his 99 point season (though to a lesser extent). They seem to come out of the wood work when he has a bad playoff series, even though he was actually pretty good against Dallas (especially in the last 3-4 games when Tkachuk went down).

He'll rebound again, but those same people will make up the same excuses for why he's successful.

How does this thread keep getting necro'd. It's not even remotely on topic anymore (like wtf does Tanev's skill have to do with a Gaudreau trade?)

Mods should lock at this point

There isn't a single deal for Gaudreau that the CBJ would do that makes the Flames a better team. The Flames aren't rebuilding so trading Gaudreau for futures makes no sense.

No possible deal here. Bad thread from the start.

Trading Gaudreau does make sense if you feel that one of the other LW's on the depth chart can step in and more or less replace Johnny's production. Then you bank the futures from the deal to keep the development stream percolating and avoid a rebuild in a few years time.

My read on it is that JG is going to come back with a vengeance of sorts next season. Then he will be traded.

I think with the current economic climate, Gaudreau will have a tough time saying no to the Flames if they offer him a nice juicy contract. I agree he bounces back though

I had a dream that Gaudreau had a 0G, 6A start in his first ten games, -6. Flames struggling. Treliving calls up Jarmo and takes the deal.

Pretty sure he knows he'd get plenty of juicy offers from a lot of teams if he went to UFA, many of which are much closer to home.
