Smart, he knew he his 60 pt ways would be exposed soon.

The unstated theory in a lot of these comments is that Columbus is the place to go so you can avoid critical fans and be lazy. It's not remotely true. And in any case the player tried to sign in Philly first! They couldn't clear cap to take him. So if he's trying to duck harsh fans, then he has really no clue about where harsh fans are.

Just all around uninformed bullshit in the comments here.

He’s paid a ton of money to just play hockey without any concern on his compete level at a national media level. The Johnny hockey dream

You have no idea about his compete level.

Johnny would have no chance of making it in the NHL at 160 lbs if he wasn't hyper competitive.

You see this anytime players choose to sign with teams that aren't at the top of the standings. As if having an easier team situation and an easier path to playoff success means you're a real competitor.

Columbus in the last 2 seasons:

He's got 18 more assists than any blue jacket has points in the last two seasons.

I took 2 seasons. The third was a 1 game 1 point stint....but hey, he was PPG there so I guess that was one of his best, eh? Guess we gotta count it.

Point stands though. And multiple people in this thread have said the same thing:

Others made HIM better, not the other way around.
The irony lol... yeah I'm sure carrying around the oft injured Sean Monahan for the better part of a decade made Gaudreau so much better. That must be why he's finished 4th in Hart voting twice.

These are his best league wide ES scoring finishes, along with his primary C + RW linemates and their ES point totals:
  • 1st (90 ESP): Lindholm (61) + Tkachuk (75) (2021-22)
  • 4th (57 ESP): Monahan (43) + end of career Hudler (27) or David Jones (14) (2015-16)
  • 5th (72 ESP): Monahan (59) + Lindholm (48) (2018-19)
  • 8th (60 ESP): Monahan (45) + Ferland (35) (2017-18)
Aside from his last year in Calgary, I think it'd be near impossible to argue that he was being elevated by his linemates in any way. And even in that career year, where that whole top line complimented each other, the overwhelming majority of Flames fan will tell you Gaudreau was the catalyst.

The truth is that for the majority of his career in Calgary, Gaudreau was limited by his linemates. When Monahan was healthy, he was an okay scoring 2C, while being pretty much useless defensively and in transition. But unfortunately, Monahan was constantly playing through injuries, and was a 4th line caliber player getting carried by Gaudreau for significant stretches. And it's not like they had much help on the other wing - there was a ~3 year stretch where Gaudreau's best RW's were Alex Chiasson, Micheal Ferland, Troy Brouwer, and David Jones. But please, tell me how it was OTHERS making HIM better lol.

Despite this lack of ES support, only Patrick Kane and Connor McDavid scored more ES points that Johnny Gaudreau during his time in Calgary. And since he's entered the league, Gaudreau is 2nd to only McDavid in primary assists at 5v5.

It took the Flames 7 years to separate Monahan and Gaudreau, and 5 years to finally put Tkachuk and Gaudreau together. Once they finally figured out a pair of players for him to play with (including a legit 2 way 1C), he put together arguably the most dominant ES season we've seen in nearly 30 years.

It's really a shame that so much of his prime was wasted by not having legitimate first line players to play with. We've only seen one full season where he was given true 1st line players to play with. Imagine what his career could have looked like had the Flames put the Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk trio together back in 2018??

Don't waste your time with nbwingsfan - he's been a Gaudreau hater since before he made the NHL. He famously predicted Gaudreau would top out as a 30-40 point PP specialist and has had a chip on his shoulder about him ever since.

I wonder what would've happened if he chose to stay in Calgary.

Does Tkachuk decide to stay as well?

Would Lindholm still be a top line caliber player?

Fun fact, 40pts is closer to 60pts than 100+ is to 60 like you stated he would be his whole career.

He's been one of the most prolific ES producers in his generation. So much for a PP specialist, huh?

Imagine trying to defend such an embarrassing take. It's almost as bad as pretending Gaudreau has been a 60 point player for the last decade

I never said he'd be a 100 point player his whole career, but I did think he had a ceiling of 100+ points, which is exactly what he did. He's a career 80 point player despite playing on some awful teams, and still you were off by a factor of 2+ lol.

Even less. Gaudreau’s a wonderful player- but he’s alone and his creativivity isn’t leading to points w/out finishers.
JG is a player that needs a strong supporting cast to get the most out of his talents. It's not a criticism, just reality. Look at what he has to work with:

It's laughable.

Ya, those are like Kuch or Mac numbers from around that time, and no one thought Johnny was like them. He absolutely needs a shooter to compliment what he does.

Dude doesn’t have that dog in him though, he’s too full on ham, cheese, and good times. Seriously though, I put him more towards the Duchene territory of f***s given, probably has a healthier life balance than most players but that makes for disappointing seasons.

Yeah, Duchene and he are similar

Put up 115pts in 2021-22 and two seasons later he's on pace for 60pts this year. I didn't think we would see this much of a drop off, this soon. What happened to the guy? Is he now a 60pt player?

Do Jackets fans regret signing this guy?

What happened is he had a career year and people thought it was going to be his norm. If you look at the two years prior and after his breakout his P/GP is nearly identical:

Prior - 0.85 P/GP
After - 0.84 P/GP
