Game illustrated the inability of the team to play a complete game. Jets stick to a system and don't break down much. We can, only in parts of the game, stick to any kind of a system and thus break down individually and team wise, all the time. We have too many players who get on their own agendas (partly b/c of youth and inexperience) and force things getting the team out of sync. Shown on a play like Boeser's at the end of the first. Canucks have good pressure on but Brock takes puck back to the blue line and , rather than simply passing it to the one of the open point man, begins to deke back and forth. Leads to the Jets getting the puck and after a series of gaffes a late period Winnipeg goal. Also the team has players like Guadette and Virtanen that can't play in a system and don't have the individual skill or temperament to contribute to systems type play. Way too often, the Canucks play randomly with many players trying to make all world plays rather than doing simple things to allow the team to play together. Hughes is a chief culprit here.
Good
Miller - strong play in offensive zone helped keep the team in the game. Can see how frustrated he is with the constant breakdowns he is getting out of younger players. Knows this can't be winning hockey
Edler - at least he was physical. Maybe a stretch to call him good but probably the best defense man. Him and Schmidt were at least ok.
Bad
Holtby - was lucky so many shots hit the posts. If not for that might have let in 5 more. Looked very shaky and guessing a lot of the time. Look badly out of position on some of the goals. Might be he isn't taken in the ED and we are stuck with him for another year. Another cap anchor.
Virtanen - back to la la land. Never seems ready when the puck comes to him. At this point virtually destroyed as a hockey player.
Gaudette - can't play at this level. How often does the team have to establish that? Get someone else in with maybe a chance to do something. So much time on his back side on the ice.
Sutter - back to being Sutter. Poor defensive game and, of course, no offense at all. Must be traded soon to get what you can. That's if they can get Benning from out of hiding under his bed long enough to do anything.
Roussel - lots of heated running around but nothing accomplished. $3 million for a player like that. Just line up at the Benning ATM and cash in.
Pearson - one of his worst games. Had some chances at the end of plays made by others but butchered them all.
Hamonic - announcers are so full of BS. Hamonic's awful play led to two goals and many other chances. Backed in on everything and he gives up the blue line near every time. Pushed right back into his crease and right into his goalie. Does not maintain good spacing with his partner no matter who he is out with.
Hughes - just terrible in his end. Needs to be said - he, right now, can not play NHL hockey in his end. Brushed aside all game and there were times you could see him unsure of where he should be or what he should be doing. Never had to learn this because he could control the puck in lower levels. Moreover, he is ranging all over the place and getting himself and others, trying to adjust to his play, out of position. Very much a net negative. You compare him to a player like Morrissey and you see the difference b/w an NHL defense man and one who is not. Morrissey gets the puck moves it up and the Jets are instantly on a rush and coming at you. Defensively he strips away the puck and quickly turns the play the other way. He has plenty of offense but rather than skating the puck all over the ice, he moves into openings to quickly exploit chances without sacrificing defensive position. He can control the play from the back without forcing things. Maybe in a couple of years Hughes will do that - but he can't right now and if he was being well coached he wouldn't be trying to. There is no discipline in Hughes game and he is right now a disaster in his end.
Others
Pettersson - nice goal but over all mediocre and again not very effective on the PP.
Schmidt - is a solid pro but poor team play always has him on his back foot. Often just trying to survive the poor play around him.
After a brief respite after the last game, time to climb make aboard the tanker and full steam ahead.
