Rumor: Jeff Skinner potentially on the block

Jeff Skinner appears to be on the block, considering it's his last year before FA. A good, not great player with potential to be a staple top 6 winger for a team if he's able to stay healthy.

“We have him for another year and that’s the way it remains,” Waddell said. “Jeff’s been a great player for our franchise. Certainly if there’s another fit someplace that makes sense for all of us we might explore it, but if not we know he’ll be a part of this group going forward.”

Got to think a team like Montreal or Toronto would be interested. Montreal obviously needs to acquire top 6 forwards, and Toronto needs to replace JVR's and Bozak's production potentially.

Thoughts on where he could be headed and what it would take?

I'm not sure Montreal would be at the top of the list of teams in on Skinner, not to say they should't be exploring all options, but I'd hope they are looking to fill other needs this summer. Bringing in Skinner and trading Pacioretty wouldn't change the team dynamic too much.

Also, lots of Carolina trade talk here:

He's a sure fire first line winger. He would be a consistent 35-45 goal scorer with a top 10C on his line.

Actually, it's more about figuring out the PP for him. Both a team figuring out how to use him on the PP and him figuring out how to be more effective. His 5v5 goal scoring isn't the issue. He's #11 in the NHL since entering the league in Even Strength goals scored.

I would think the return would have to be at least a 1st and a B level prospect, or an A level prospect and a 2nd. Ideally there would be a 1 for 1 type swap for a Simmonds type player but he's one of the few that's on the block that really makes much of any sense for the Canes right now.

What was Skinners usage generally like? I've noticed that he bounces around lines quite often and wasn't really sure if he played 2nd or 3rd line with PP time this year. Did Carolina jumble lines around a lot?

Rod Brind'Amour was just named the Canes Head Coach. He has coached Skinner over the past 7 years through 31 Point seasons and 37 Goal (63 point) seasons. We can safely assume that Brind'Amour has a good read on what he could potentially get out of Skinner.

If Brind'Amour thinks he can get Skinner into 30+ goal territory then I doubt that the Canes will trade him this off-season barring a great offer. At worst, the team would be better off letting Skinner pad his stats and then trade him at the Trade Deadline for a bigger rental haul.
If Brind'Amour doesn't think much of Skinner then he will be dealt soon and the return will probably be middling. Maybe a #10-20 Overall pick (or comparable prospect/player) + a sweetener.

I heard the opposite, he cant play with a top center, cuz he cant utilize his linemates, and he is more or less a one man show, thats why he plays with Ryan and Stempniak.. dunno if it is true, dont see much of Canes..

Well that didn’t really say much. Wouldn’t that be the same for everyone.

Throughout his 8 year Canes career Skinner hasn't found consistent chemistry with any Canes player for more than a portion of his season. During his 37 goal campaign (2016-17) he played primarily with Derek Ryan and Lee Stempniak (what I would consider to be bottom-6 players) on what Canes fans would consider to be the 2nd/3rd line.

Good news is that Skinner has the ability to produce 30+ goals essentially on his own.
Bad news is that Skinner does not make those around him better. He's a lone ranger more likely to lose the puck doing too much than make a nice pass.

It is fair to question whether his chemistry issues stem from the fact that the Canes haven't historically and don't currently have anything resembling a top-6 pass-first Center. It is sad that Derek Ryan is close to the top of that list. Jussi Jokinen might be the closest previously.

We didn't have defined lines to be honest. Aho-Staal-TT was the top line and after that it was a hodge podge. He got 2nd line minutes, but Skinner's most common linemates were Derek Ryan and Justin Williams at ES. He was on the 2nd PP unit with Hanifin, Ryan, Williams, and Rask.

Toronto is probably the last team that would be interested.

I think something around

Silf+ for Skinner+ could potentially make sense, the bigger plus coming from Anaheim.

Would be a good fit in Colorado, though the Avs need a little more size in the lineup. That being said, he'd fit like a glove and the Avs have the assets/cap space to get it done, so it wouldn't surprise me in the least.
