Also consider the vast difference in league scoring from then until now. So far what Laine is doing is very impressive, but also consider that his team is stacked and Ovechkin was literally a one man show as a rookie.

14 games? 14? Come on. We weren't even 100% sure what we had with Ovie after 14 freakin games.

Let's just sit back and watch what is hopefully another great NHLer without this ridiculousness.

Laine - First 14 games - 11 goals - Age 18
Ovechkin - First 14 games - 10 goals - Age 20

Nothing like comparing a rookie to a HOFer after the first 14 games of his career. But I guess it's better than doing it after 1 game ... Auston Matthews.

Pass Ovechkin how? As an all time goalscorer? Almost no chance. In terms of rookie seasons goals? Also doubtful, though 05-06 was higher scoring. In terms of goals relative to the league as a rookie? Less doubtful, but still unlikely. As goalscorer in the league currently? Probably not this year, but I wouldn't be surprised in the next 2 years.

Ovechkin looked much better to the eye. He was a force of nature on a one man team. People got into hockey because he played with unparalleled swag.

Laine could outscore him but he's more like Kovalchuk

Little early for this thread. Longevity and health is Ovechkins strong hold. Let's give the guy a couple seasons lol.

Laine should be dissapointed if his career is only Ovechkin calibre. He should put his aims to be as good as Lemieux.

Laine is a strong candidate to win some Richard trophies at some point in his career, but Ovechkin is one of, if not the greatest pure goal scorer of all time. So it is extremely unlikely Laine will surpass him.

Sometimes I wish there was a separate forum for the teen-aged fans so we are spared from having half of the front page with threads like that every season until December.

Laine will become a very good player, and i think he might become a better all around player... but 0% chance he gets more goals than ovechkin
