Just having a discussion with a buddy. We both don't think it can be Gretzky because of the goal tending back in the day. Any thoughts?

Dont you think all the analysts, hockey experts etc would have made your statement if it holds a truthful value? Gretzky scored an incredible amount of points that no one can touch, yet it's not enough to be the all time best cause the goaltenders were forrest gumps compared to Holtby and friends

Greatest all time? I don't think so.

Crosby, Ovechkin and Lidstrom will be 1-2-3. Maybe Crosby, Lidstrom and then Ovechkin.

I apologize for this alcohol induced thread. We both realize how ridiculous this sounds now. Can't believe the amount of hate in here tbh lol

If you were starting a franchise and could pick the entire careers where would you take Jagr?

Gretzky 1487 games
Lemieux 915
Jagr 1667 plus his other years in the KHL 204 games
Orr's 657

Base it off of 80 games a season. No one is ever 100% for ever. All rounded up.

Gretzky 19 season's
Lemieux's 12 season's
Orr's 9 seasons
Jagr's 24 seasons and counting

Staying healthy for what ever the reason should play in the picture.

Add in guys like Hull, Howe, Messier, Bourque and others; their all star careers lasted twice as long over Orr 5 to 10 more years than Lemieux.

It comes down to, are Lemieux and Orr twice the players that X was. Looking at careers not projected stats are best 7. Orr and Lemieux could fall down.

Steal government pension formulas. Best 5 years * years of service * percentage (2?) and then adjust for era and then adjust again for how much easier it was to play prelockout (easiest being during the 80s and early 90s).

I think my mockup of the government pension formula is missing a number but I'm too lazy to care.

An argument can be made for only Gretzky lemiueux and Orr

I agree with this, but even so it's hard to argue for Lemieux and Orr. Gretzky was just so dominant. The fact that he would have the scoring title without scoring a goal is amazing. The fact that he also has more goals than anyone else makes it even crazier.

How can it be not Gretzky?

If goaltending then was so bad, why didn't anyone else performed at his level?
He doubled up on other players points.

The guy broke the scoring record at age 28
When Howe, Messier and Jagr took them 20+ years

Jagr is still about 1000 points behind #99

Jagr is not even top 5

Jagr is 100 games removed from the all-time record in games played. If he plays another season, he can actually get that.

At this moment he is:

4th in GP (100 behind Gordie Howe for no 1)
3rd in G (45 behind Gordie Howe for no 2)
5th in A (34 behind Ray Bourque for no 4)
2nd in P
1st in GWG with 133 (Iginla closest active player with 97)

for me--

take a the ten or eleven BEST CONSECUTIVE YEARS of the payers and compare them

for jagra 1994 to 2006 Grets from 78 to 89 11 season both players

Jagr 798 games to Gretz 846
Jagr 466 Goals to Grets 680
Jagr 647 Assists to Gretz 1261
Jagr 1113 pts tp Gretz 1941

when i player players a long time--stats get panded--that is why I like looking at 10 or so years of playeing

Gretzky played in the same league as Jagr from 90-91 to 98-99 and was better then Jagr over that time period even well passed his peak. So no.

Jagr is pretty much the modern era's Howe: best player at his peak but his numbers are still largely due to longevity. He even played in another league for a number of years around 40.
