Is Jack Eichel a lazy superstar?

The kid is a hell of a talent and possesses amazing physical attributes but he seems so damn soft on the play. He tends to float so much during games and misses so many assignments on D. I know he's playing for a poor team and probably is feeling the pressure of the world but his effort and play on the ice doesn't quite justify that of a player who is about to get paid $10 million dollars. How do Sabres fans feel? And what do the rest of you think?

I've always been a big fan of the guy but one thing that absolutely irked me was his lazyness on the ice when he played at the NTDP. He can flat out dominate if he wants to but he just doesn't want to kick it into that next gear most of the time. It's frustrating to watch because we know what he's truly capable of.

His defensive intensity fluctuates but much less than when he was a rookie. For the most part he works hard without the puck now. He still isn't what you would call strong defensively (see GWG last night), but he isn't lazy.

He's had some excellent defensive games this year, such as the win in Anaheim where he was ferocious all over the ice

He appears that way. I just don't think he's quite as smart and driven as the superstars of the league, but his physical skillset is right there with anyone. Also, he's still only 21? He'll be a great player IMO eventually.

He seem to go into his own head at times, at least that’s my explanation for him suddenly becoming passive and floating in his own zone. When he’s ”on” he’s great defensively but at times it seems like he’s thinking too far ahead and forgets the work he has to do at the moment. One of those occasions resulted in the gwg for Penguins yesterday.

Isn't he being paid ten million per season? He shouldn't need a wack of help. Thus far, I've been very underwhelmed with his career.
Being paid well doesn’t mean you perform well. Actually, getting a raise might impact your performance negatively.

"Lazy" to describe a player is very, very, overused. Mostly to describe an underperforming star player who has a longer stride, which makes skating look effortless. Very few players in the history of the NHL were lazy. Its the reverse of the coach speak bs justification for why plugs like Tanner Glass have careers for "working hard".

The guy has 16 points so far this season on a team that isn't clicking nor is he- yet

He'll be fine because he is a superstar

As someone has already mentioned I think his upright style and long stride make him appear lazy or aloof but he isn't by virtue of being an NHL player- they don't make lazy

There’s some truth in that, but at age 21? I mean it’s not like he’s 30 with a growing family and a mortgage, thinking about how he’s never going to have another big contract after this. A 21 year old athlete should be trying to beat the world on pure testosterone, regardless of the paycheck.
