It's kind of funny that a city that constantly harps on the glory days of the smash mouth 70s steelers or players like samuelsson wants the team now to be perfect gentlemen on the ice.

Guess that's due to the fanbase bring pretty young and only jumping on the hockey bandwagon after the mid 2000 lockout.

Downie running down a ref isn't being like the smash mouth Steelers or like Ulf Samuelsson, though. That's just plain stupid. That's the kind of thing that Downie needs to get under control.

I can accept an occasional penalty from him if it comes from him playing physical that was on the line, but could have been called either way. Downie, on the other hand, has been taking stupid penalties. Ones that are the direct result of him being out of control, rather just being physical. Too much of it is the result of getting revenge, rather than playing hard, and I would have thought that by now he should realize that the refs always call the retaliation penalty, even though they rarely call the act that instigated it.

It's also worth noting that mouthing off to the refs isn't "tough" at all. That one is on everyone on the team.
