I mean the injuries may have played a part, but last year he got off to a white hit start and also had a stretch of 21 games that saw him score 4 goals and go goal lead in 10-11 games in the middle of it.

I would argue that he is more consistent than streaky. Injuries have hampered his performance but you do not rack up as many goals as he does with just being streaky. This year will be interesting in that hopefully he stays injury free and we get to see what Matthews can do in a full season.

Everyone is streaky to an extent but he's reasonably consistent

No goal scorer on the planet will score exactly one goal every two games. That player doesn't exist. As far as goal scorers go he's pretty consistent. His game itself can be inconsistent. It's hard to separate that out from the injuries though; there was a noticeable difference before and after the Trouba hit last year.

Something mildly interesting: since his 4 goal debut, he hasn't scored more than 2 goals in one game. Despite that he consistently clicks along at 40+ goal pace. Contrast that with the scorers of the Laine mold, and without doing any math, you could get away with inferring a flatter distribution.

The % production difference between his rookie season and last year is 3%. That's two effectively identical outputs sandwiching a terrible outing.

Where you have long droughts.

To consider Matthews a streaky goal scorer means you have no clue about hockey

To me it looks like he was basically scoring at exactly his pace for most of 2018-2019. He had a very explosive start, but he only had 2 major "droughts" (23-33, 49-53)

100% of his goals are scored across 44.7% of his gp.

Goal scorers tend to be more streaky than point producers but Matthews is pretty damn consistent. Everyone has 4-5 game stretches throughout the season where they get shutout or only have a point or two. That's not inconsistent, its just the ebbs and flows of the season. When I think of streaky, I think of someone like Laine who scored 18 goals in a 12 game stretch and only 12 goals in the other 70 games last season.
