Until he becomes statistically less streaky, yes, he is very streaky.

Injuries aside, He’s constantly scoring. He’s that net front presence that every team wants! This is coming from a Jets fan.

I feel like there is a joke to be made here about streaking... but will refrain.

Does it matter if he's streaky if he still gets results every year?

Consistent. Sometimes the bounces go your way sometimes they don't. Apart from 1 odd bad game, there's never been a stretch of say 3+ games where he was awful. You know what kind of effort you're getting out of him every night

He's a very, very elite goal scorer, but not a particularly good setup man or doesn't really have elite vision in terms of developing the play that doesn't end with him zipping a shot bar down. Hence why he's a 'streaky' player.

Guys like Crosby and McDavid aren't considered streaky because even when they're not scoring they're impacting the game heavily on both ends of the ice, plus racking up assists.

Compared to the average player? No. But he does seem to go through some pretty weird stretches where he'll score around 1.5 GPG for a dozen or so games and then be extremely quiet for the next dozen. That's not unusual for elite goal scorers so it doesn't bother me too much.

Not sure it's fair to compare him to McDavid or Crosby. He never has been and never will be a playmaker of that quality, and I am not sure there are any players right now who have that ability (outside Kuch of course). Those types of playmakers are on a different scale when it comes to consistency. It's not their job to take a pass and only think shoot like Ovechkin, Matthews, Laine.

In terms of goalscorers, he is below the top end guys, but more consistent than most, scoring in 40% of his games.

Laine scores in 22% of his games (or did last season), but still had a nice goals total. That's streaky.

Ovechkin scored is 45% of his games, Drai in 49% of his games. Incredibly consistent.

Good points brought up about Matthews' pedestrian playmaking and vision.

He's not a gamebreaker who dominates the ice in the mold of somebody like McDavid, MacKinnon or Kucherov and while he'll put up goals there are long stretches where he is pretty invisible and not that noticeable at times even if he is scoring. So if a person is looking at it that way, I can see why this player would appear inconsistent to them.

I'd say he's consistent but his stats are a little flattering compared to the player you get on the average night. He tends to have massive starts to the season and then he settles into what he really is.

Year 1...
First 6 games- 6 goals and 10 points
Prorated 82 games: 82 goals and 137 points
-
Next 76 games- 34 goals and 59 points
Prorated 82 games: 37 goals and 64 points

Year 2...
First 10 games- 8 goals and 14 points
Prorated 82 games: 66 goals and 115 points
-
Next 52 games- 26 goals and 49 points
Prorated 82 games: 41 goals and 77 points

Year 3...
First 8 games (11% of the season)- 10 goals and 16 points.
Prorated 82 games: 102 goals and 164 points
-
Next 60 games (88% of the season) - 27 goals and 57 points
Prorated 82 games: 37 goals and 78 points

When you play at a 37 goal/78 point pace for 88% of the season, you're not a top 10 player...or 1A as Ron MacLean said.

McDavid had 31 goals (compared to Matthews' 27) and 93 points (compared to Matthews' 57 points) in his final 60 games last season.

I know that no one is saying Matthews is as good as McDavid but I'm just showing what a real superstars' stats look like. Look up Kucherov, Marchand or Kane's last 60 games. These are REAL superstars.

He's streaky in the sense that he scores his goals in bunches, but he's consistent in the sense that he does it every year.

The flaw in this is its presuming the injuries he had in 2/3 are a non factor

Good research.

Auston definitely has a tendency to start the season on fire, only to slow down quite a bit.

I remember another poster who went into detail showing that Auston produces' less as the games go by.

I'd call him streaky.
