I don't know the answer to the question in the subject line as to the value of the blue check. But for almost everyone with a blue check, it's a business expense that can be written off a tax time, so the cost doesn't really matter unless your deductions exceed the amount you owe in taxes.

This. Most people who have checkmarks can do just that.

Not even saying he's wrong, but....man, rich people are so cheap

People want athletes to give their team a hometown discount and leave millions of dollars on the table. Here, we have a 75 year old man with a net worth of $500M and he's turning his nose up at paying $20 a month
Or they realize that it's not worth it. Just because one is rich does not mean one is stupid with money, usually the opposite.

And as he reply to someone points out it is the principal of the thing. His being on twitter or not does not change his book sales and movie deals etc. But him being on twitter does bring twitter users to read his tweets, so yes twitter should pay him if anything.

I guess it's $8 a month now? He's definitely not making this up as he goes along.
It's funny because the only thing paying the bills is indeed advertising and by far. Charging for Twitter, if he decides even the most basic level will have fees, will totally backfire as I stated before, research shows that the vast majority of people refuse to pay for social media platnforms.

If they're going to make you pay for twitter they'd better clean it up, gets annoying to have my entire feed flooded by right wing tweeters when I don't follow a single one or even live in the country that they're all from

How are you getting these? I don't get them and I limit who I follow. You may want to unsubsrcibe from anyone espousing such rhetoric. You have the power on twitter to follow who you want

Ehhh. I'd imagine there is some value to him being able to advertise his new books/movies directly to his millions of followers. If he comes out with a new project every year, that's $240. He needs to sell an extra what....15-20 books to cover that? Seems like a pretty good ROI if you ask me.

But I also get the sense you're taking my post too seriously.

Did he just realize there aren't enough blue checkmark accounts on twitter for $20 $8 per month to bring in enough revenue?

Why is he spitballing ideas on Twitter? If he actually wanted to buy Twitter for $44 billion you'd think he'd have a plan in place months ago.

Most likely. Like so many things he does he has no concrete plans just grand ideas and sometimes work and sometimes no so much.

You're assuming people are cheapskates (which they are) when it comes to this. Most, if not all, of the verified people in the US can write off this expense on their Taxes.

You'll always have Raid: Shadow Legends, Elon. They'll whore out to anybody.

Also by charging for it as one poster remarked you're opening the door for all sorts of fake accounts to spread nonsense. Not just news but real people as well. How many fake Elon Musk accounts would we see saying that the price is actually much higher and to send those wacky digits on the back of your credit card to him?

As I mentioned, I don't follow a single one of them, they just get pushed to me. I don't know why it thinks I want to see tweets from the trump children or dinesh dezoozuza or whatever he guys name is

I understand pushing things it thinks you might like, but pushing a harmful rhetoric to people who clearly don't want to see them is not how you do it

I don't think you understood the point.

There are about 400,000 verified Twitter accounts as of now. Even if every single one of them paid the $8 per month that would only bring in $38 million a year.

Even if every extant verified user paid the fee, the annual income would be less than a tenth of the estimated $1bn in interest payments due on Musk’s loans to buy the site.

And that was when he was asking for $20, before he started haggling with Stephen King for some reason.

Elon Musk considers charging Twitter users $20 a month for verified accounts

How are they being pushed to you? Are they targeted ads? Are you using the native Twitter software? I use another Twitter program on my pc that lists tweets. I never see that stuff

For months if not over a year twitter has started showing you tweets by people you don't follow...I don't know what to tell you, it's not like I'm using some weird version of it

If i'm running some bullshit far out political website I can't imagine $8/month would deter me from being able to tweet out my eyball catching nonsense.

I‘m sure this is only one of many monetization changes coming.

And I don’t think they’ll all necessarily fall on the common rank and file Twitter users. Hell it took Zuckerberg over a decade to figure out how to monetize the social media beast he founded.

Well yeah it would have to be. But it seems quite clear that he doesn't know what those changes will be, which makes his decision requirement to purchase Twitter look like a questionable investment.

Just monetize everything, Elon. Twitter was already dying anyway, so this'll just push it off the cliff faster. It'll probably get flooded with porn like certain other social media apps...
Which other social media apps? I need to know the answer.

For research.

Twitter is about narcissism for many and people are narcissistic aren't they?

They aren't exactly tweeting using anonymous handles on blogs like before twitter ruined the internet.

And there ya go, as some predicted above, Twitter will get into paywall protected porn.

Twitter is working on a feature that would charge users for some video content, The Washington Post reported.

Referred to as "Paywalled Video," the new feature would allow content creators to charge users a fee to view videos on the platform, according to an internal email obtained by the publication.

The Post reported that a Twitter employee, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said it seemed like a feature that would probably be used at least partly for adult content.

The report added that the move could place Twitter in competition with sites that have an emphasis on adult content.
