What a joke Holmgren is. Telling Bryz and acting as if they probably weren't going to buy him out, but that it depended on what happens.

They clearly planned on doing it all along since they missed out on Bernier, and are buying him out anyway. How can any player trust or respect him?

I'm wondering who Bettman is fooling with all this parity and salary cap nonsense, when there's clearly a few teams in the league that have no problem outbidding everyone with ridiculous contracts and then buying them out for $20M+ after only a couple years.

He should never have allowed these compliance buyouts. The Avs get screwed the last lockout, building from within, and have to adjust to the market and re-sign their own players with big contracts. The Rangers and Philly's of the world get off scott free by handing out ludicrous contracts to UFA's that CREATE the market and are the reason prices are getting out of control, and then they get to use multiple compliance buyouts without it affecting them.

It's a business first and foremost. And you have no idea what exactly Holmgren told Bryzgalov or his agent behind closed doors. The words "classless", "joke" and "disgusting" are so wrongly over used so often on HF they hardly have any meaning left.

We do know actually. He said he didn't think Bryz was a problem, that they played him too much, and that he had no "current" plans to buy him out. Of course this isnt the same as saying he won't buy him out, but it was clearly a game at his expense to limit any apparent leverage from LA to make them feel like they were going into next year without Bryz.

They didn't decide in the last few days to buy out Bryz. The only thing that changed was Bernier was traded to Toronto. It's pretty clear they intended on buying him out, and since they haven't replace him, they were just stringing him along.

This is pretty much par for the course after the Ricahrds and Carter trades where he took advantage of their loyalties as well.

I didn't say they received extra benefits than other teams. I'm saying Bettman shouldn't have allowed compliance buyouts in the first place. It lets teams that took advantage of cap loopholes, and/or drove up prices with bad contracts off the hook, and there's clearly a handful of teams that have way more money and willingness to pay a player not to pay for them, than others.

It's possible. I would think they wouldn't have been so coy before the Bernier trade if this was true though, just like with Briere.

Definitely hurts their bottom line, but still creates an unfair advantage within the NHL to teams that could afford to drive up prices with bad contracts, and can now afford to just buy them out without having negative consequences within the NHL which is was the cap is supposed to be for.
