The only way Coburn becomes avaliable is if they're unable to unload Meszaros or in a deal for a better defenseman.

Meszaros had shoulder surgury in 09. Then had back surgery in 2012. Then tore his achilles in the off season. Then injured his shoulder at the beginning of this year and missed a few months. Came back and immediately re-injured the shoulder.

He's making $4M and isn't gonna be an easy sell.

No he won't be an easy sell, but only one desperate GM is enough to make this happen.

He's like very tall Zanon.

Except he's soft.

I think he's the worst Dman in NHL that makes over 2. mil.

Outside of Colorado :sarcasm:.

Soft for his size and turns the puck over a lot. But, if they wanted to do Zanon and a '14 6th-7th rounder or something for Schultz, I'd make the swap. At least he can skate. And he's hungry to prove to himself and others that he can be a top-4 D-man again.

I realise carrying that many defensemen isn't practical. I'm just demonstrating what our cap situation would look like just re-signing our own free-agents.

The most important thing to note is the following season Stastny, O'Reilly, Landeskog, Duchene, Downie, McGinn, Elliott, Barrie, Varlamov, and Giguere are all due for contract negotiations.

I think I've been through this before... but oh well.

Let's say we re-sign everyone this and next offseason.

Duchy --> $3.5 to $7.0 (+3.5)
ROR --> $5.0 to $6.0 (+1)
Staz --> $6.6 to $6.0 (-0.6)
Landy --> $3.575 to $4.0 (+0.4)
McGinn --> $1.75 to $2.75 (+1)
Downie --> $2.65 to $3.5 (+0.8)
Elliott/Barrie --> $0.90 to $2.0 (+1.1 x 2)
Varly --> $2.833 to $4.2 (+1.4)
Zanon --> $2.25 to $0 (-2.25)
Hunwick --> $1.6 to $0 (-1.6)
SOB --> $2.0 to $0 (-2)

That's 9.7 mil minus about 5.85mil. The majority of which come from the 64.3 cap, doesn't get rid of Jones and doesn't factor in ELC contracts, etc. If the cap jumps to ~$70mil (which it will) we'll have room for our 1st OV pick and by the time we're contenders enough room for a FA winger or defenseman pickup.

That's 4 million left for 6 rosters positions, but that's assuming the cap stays the same, which is highly unlikely (will go up), and I was very generous in my estimates. And David Jones is still on there. I don't believe next year is going to be a big as a problem as we anticipated, unless Kroenke only spends to the lower limit still, but I'm sure Roy will have something to say about that.

I don't have UFA list right now, but is there any players suitable for that #1 left wing role? Personally I don't think we need that great guy, he would have to be just good two-way player with hard hitting game and decent shot. Parenteau and Duchene are good enough to make that line dangerous.

I just don't see us being able to keep 3 highly paid centers long term. Stack the top 6, platoon the defense and lets go.

Why would Stastny play for Colorado as #3 center when he could go to St.Louis and be #1 center? No way he stays with Colorado, unless ROR is traded.

Anyway, I'm sure one of these guys will be gone by next trade deadline. Either ROR or Stastny. Most likely Stastny.

I think It would be stupid to keep such a high quality centers. We can use one of those pieces to get something decent to plug other holes we have, which would make our team better overall.

This. I think one of Stastny or ROR move on, or Stastny is moved to LW and put on the 1st line with Duchene and PAP. I think the Avs should try Stastny on the wing before shipping him out.

To me this looks a hell of a lot better of a top 6:
Stastny-Duchene-PAP
Landy-ROR-Downie

I'd expect the whole top line to cross the 70 point mark with each having around 25 goals (Duchene might be a touch higher than the other 2).

In this free agent crop?

Not really. Not a legit 1st line Winger anyways. There are a few decent forwards available like Dupuis, Horton, Stalberg, Fillpula, etc. But no Real 1st line LW that we need.

In the 2014 Free agent Crop though theres Vanek, Marleau, Heatley, Camalleri, Michalek, and Kunitz.

There might be a couple Buyout candidates that could fill a 1st line W role this year like Heatley, or Briere. But I don't know if we should be going after guys who are bad enough that they need to be bought out.

Probably the best LW on the market for the Avs would be Clarke MacArthur. Fast, talented, not entirely consistent though. Simon Gagne would come cheap, but there's a reason for that.

It'd be a stretch, but Jarome Iginla plays on the left side all the time even though he's technically a RW. We could always shift Jones to the left side if need be. But Iggy in an Avs uniform just...wouldn't be right.

As said earlier, buyouts will increase the talent pool--probably the biggest name to drop will be Martin Havlat, but I don't think he'd be a good investment.

If we could somehow fool MacTavish into giving us Magnus Paajaarvi for cheap I'd be all over that.

Duchene 30+ goals, PAP 20+ goals, Stastny 15+ goals I'd say. Would be great line. Stastny could take more role defensive side of game and two playmakers for Duchene. This could be deadly. Although Stastny could make us lethal third line as well.

Marleau would be awesome. Perfect fit for this line.

I know you are just suggesting some buy-out candidates and not possible acquisitions. But Heatley wouldn't make it through 1 practice with Roy.

I'd say Stastny would hit 25 goals. He has hit or been on pace for 20 goals every season in his career and on that line he would be playing with the one of the best playmakers he has played with.

Actually I think Dupuis would fit that two-way first line forward to be honest. He does a bit of everything. Duchene isn't Crosby but he wasn't Tavares either before Parenteau came over.

I've read some good analysis by fantasy hockey guys on why Dupuis will still be able to put up 50-60 points even if he leaves.

I think we should trade for Vanek personally, both him and Dupuis play both sides actually. So either one would be a pretty good addition.

I'd put Dupuis on the 2nd line... A Landeskog-ROR-Dupuis line would probably be the best defensive 2nd line in the league and each should put up between 50-60 points.
