Let's just make certain Sherman isn't in the room when negotiations begin.

I don't think Sherman was the problem.

How are we going to get someone better than Suter? Suter is arguably the best defenseman in the NHL right now.

A better question is how are we going to afford someone better than Suter? Within three years the Suter's of the NHL will be making 8-9 million a season out of free agency.

That brings up another question. Will ownership be willing to spend to the cap once we are fielding a contender? I have to think "yes", but it's been such a long time since we've been in that position, and I really don't have a sense of what the ownership's limits will be.

We'll never be a full cap team in my opinion, management enjoys flexibility. But I could see us operating at around 5 mil or less than the cap any given year as contenders.

I just can't see us being able to afford a tier 1 free agent if we don't pick them up within 1-2 years. They'll be too expensive soon and we have too much talent to secure that acquiring them will be a Hossa scenario that pushes out home grown players for a 1-2 year window.

Personally, I like the strategy of keeping a good cap cushion. I think there is a chance we see the Avs take advantage of our cap space this deadline to make some advantageous moves.

Agreed, but I just remember how annoyed Sherman was when he held the presser announcing the Avs had matched the offer sheet. I think he was pissed because him and the organization got royally embarrassed and that he was forced to come out of his prairie dog hole to admit as much.

I just don't think he's elite. I know I'm only one here who thinks so, but that's MHO. Very, very good, but not elite.

As a defenseman he is elite. He isn't the greatest offensively, but Suter is an absolute stud. He plays 30 minutes a game.

I don't want to derail this thread. Just not a fan of Suter. You're not gonna convince me otherwise, and you're certainly entitled to tell me I'm dead wrong. I just don't think he's worth the mega-contract he was given. That's my opinion, and we'll see in the end if I was right or not.

Anyhow, my original point was that if the Avs were gonna break open the bank for a free agent blueliner, I hope he's worth it. I certainly don't see a Suter-level defender on the market this offseason or any future offseason. But if there isn't anything decent out there I'm not a fan of throwing good money after someone who's not worth it. I'm growing tired of the refrain "He's a huge improvement over what we currently have in our bottom four." That doesn't mean we should automatically bring said defender in and it certainly doesn't mean we should throw gobs of money at him either.

We haven't been a very attractive option for free agents in the past just because of our management and cellar-dwelling ways but with the turnaround this year our team looks a lot more inviting. We saw Horton choose the Blue Jackets because of their infectious atmosphere last year. I know he was coerced with the offer they gave him but perhaps we could land a good defender because they want to play here. At least, that is what I am hoping happens with FA this summer.
