Local ownership, while not necessarily the answer, would certainly be a net positive. I wonder if the other "Jim" might be interested. There was a lot of wishful thinking and speculation that Jim Goodnight might want to invest in the Canes. But to date, that has proved to be a pipedream.

However, I wonder if Jim Goodman and his son Michael might be a better fit...at least as an investor. Now I know he doesn't have quite the deep pockets that Goodnight has, but he has proven to be a sports fan with the Durham Bulls. Maybe there's something more like an ownership group of which he could be a major part.

It would also seem that there might be benefits from a marketing perspective with his ties not just to broadcasting but to the community....just a thought.

Jim Goodmon is already a minority investor through CBC.

Here were our minority investors:

Michael Kahn
Capitol Broadcasting Company, Inc. (James Goodmon, A.J. Fletcher Foundation)
Matthew Szulik
Ice Puck LLC (Orris Temple Sloan, Jr.)
Clancy & Theys Construction (David Tim Clancy, Joel Thomas Irving Clancy, Kathryn Virginia Clancy, Robert Todd Clancy, Sarah Elizabeth Sturm)
Jim Rutherford
Hurricanes Investment, LLC (Abel Zalcberg, Barbara Zalcberg)
Whitney Holdings Inc. (Frederick J. Whitney, Timothy M. Whitney).

"The remaining two investment partners have chosen to keep their partnerships private."

One of the reasons for having several strong investors is that one or more could step up when it's time for Karmanos to sell. Having worked for a couple of the people on that list, I'm guessing that the succession plan is probably clearer than we realize.

The Atlanta Hawks just sold for 850 million (which may or may not include the arena).

Yeah, 400 million for the 'Canes isn't looking so insane right now.

Personally I think it's an organizational failure from top to bottom and there's a system of checks and balances keeping this team from getting better. They need to spend more (and more intelligently) to get better but PK needs more income from fans but fans need to see a winning product to want to do that. The circle of Canes

Sounds like Hartford. Except you folks have a pretty sweet arena deal.

That list you have is old, Hank - notice JR's still on it even though he had to divest his ownership stake once he took the Pens job. Here's the list as I've put it up on the BoH board including what those people's "day jobs" are and whether or not they're local. Locals have an asterisk next to their entry:

  • Michael Kahn (CEO, Empire Distributors, also owner of AHL Charlotte Checkers, based in Charlotte)
  • Capitol Broadcasting Company (CEO James Goodmon, also owner of Triple-A Durham Bulls, based in Raleigh)*
  • Matthew Szulik (Former CEO and president of Red Hat, based in Raleigh)*
  • Temple Sloan, Jr. (chairman of the board for General Parts International, Inc., Trail Creek Investments, Inc. and Highwoods Properties, based in Raleigh)*
  • Clancy & Theys Construction (David Tim Clancy, Joel Thomas Irving Clancy, Kathryn Virginia Clancy, Robert Todd Clancy, and Sarah Elizabeth Sturm; Construction/construction management, based in Raleigh)*
  • Ron Francis (Hurricanes General Manager, based in Raleigh)*
  • Abel and Barbara Zalcberg (co-founders of OFM, Inc., an importer/distributor of office furniture, based in Raleigh)*
  • Whitney Holdings, Inc. (Frederick and Timothy Whitney, partners in Whitney Wealth Management, based in Raleigh)*
  • GreengardenDRC, LLC (Eliza Kraft Olander and Brian McHenry, Community developers, philanthropist, president of McHenry Software, based in Raleigh)*
  • Ron DeLange (Retired CEO of Tekelec, based in Morrisville, NC)*
  • Mark and Tera Rein (VP and Co-founder of Epic Games, based in Cary, NC)*
  • Chuck Hammel (President and CEO of PITT OHIO, a regional transportation company, based in Pittsburgh, PA)
  • 4 undisclosed investors (identities/locations unknown)

Epic Games still does pretty well for itself, yeah? Unreal Tournament and Gears of War. And the Infinity Blade IOS App, IIRC.

Explain that to me like I'm 5. Any chance that engine could be used to make a halfway decent hockey game?

Unreal Engine is a game engine many companies use to make their games. The Batman Arkham games and Mass Effect series are two of the more prominent ones from UE3. Not sure what/if any sports games have been made using Unreal Engine, it's mainly used for fps and rpg games if memory serves right.

A lot of schools use it and it has recently been released free of charge unless you earn money from your creations. It's fun to mess around with

Someone here needs to win the lottery and buy the team. I'm sure this franchise would have no problems then.

Holy cow an internet forum from 1996. That is good stuff. Too bad there were not more replies.

And I had no idea the mayor at the time formed a committee for an expansion team, I always just kind of figured Karmanos was the one interested in Raleigh from the get-go, not the mayor.

Nope. IIRC, Karmanos' original first choice was Columbus since Compuware had an office there and his second wife (Debra, whom he ultimately divorced) was from there. However, I believe the NHL balked and told him to look elsewhere when Columbus' plan for an interim arena was a converted airplane hangar at Port Columbus International Airport.

Yikes, that actually sounds worse than the Hurricanes plans of either using Dorton Arena or playing in Fayetteville while the RBCPNCESA was under construction. I seem to recall those were two options they had before Greensboro happened.

In retrospect, I kind of wish they had gone with Dorton. Attendance wouldn't have been that much worse and they would have probably made more money in the long run by cultivating the local fan base.

Granted, Dorton is FAR FAR FAR from an NHL quality arena. But it still wouldn't have been as embarrassing as Greensboro.

You, sir, may have found the earliest known Internet discussion related to the Carolina Hurricanes. At that point in time, I was 10 years old and my parents had been using Nandonet's dialup for a year at most on their Compaq Presario that probably had 100 MB of hard drive space and must have cost them 2,000 mid-'90s dollars. And my interest in hockey was limited to the Mighty Ducks and the occasional IceCaps game.

Incidentally, Nandonet = NandO.Net = N&O.Net. Yup, the N&O ran an ISP for a while in the mid-to-late '90s. The idea was that the internet was the future of news delivery, which was mostly true, but it turns out that being both a news source and an ISP didn't make much sense. Anyway, for the curious, here's all the info you could ever want to know about it.

^ I hadn't thought of it that way... I guess that was the birth of Canes online discussion.

Incidentally, I came to know of the existence of a paper called the N&O through Nandonet, which was one of the larger features of the early-90s internet landscape. I wonder how many people around the world learned about local Triangle news through that portal.
