If you're Matthews and Marner's agent it would be negligent not to advise them to become RFA's

Every player in the league could use offer sheets to do their negotiating for them. So every owner has an interest in making sure they aren’t used.

I have never seen so much **** about offer sheets (there's a reason they never get done) until the elite Leafs youngsters hit the scene.

Holy sweet god you people will grasp at anything.

Consider it the world paying you back for the new main board Leaf thread every hour about how the Leafs are the best team on earth and how godly Matthews and Tavares are.

Make no mistake, Matthews is going to go for top dollar and it will bode well for other high end talent looking to get a bump in pay. Matthews should use other teams as leverage to squeeze out as much money he can from the Leafs. Leafs will pony up but they will have holes like swiss cheese throughout their lineup because they won't be able to afford many other impact players.

Whether Matthews stays or goes is a WIN WIN for the B's.

Sure thing! Because every Leafs thread on the main board is stated by a Leaf fan!

*Leafs fan starts a thread based on comments from a former Maple Leafs player and current insider at Toronto Sports Network, which mentioned the contracts of various Leafs players and potential offer sheets*

*The contents of the thread: Leafs fans: “WAH WAH WHY EVERYBODY HATES THE LEAFS!!”

We can do this too y'know.

*Thread appears on the main boards when one of the leagues premier head coaches in Barry Trotz compares Matthews to an NHL great and calls him a generational player*

*The content of the thread* "WAHHHHHH WHY ARE THERE SO MANY LEAFS THREADS!?!? THIS IS WHY EVERYONE HATES THE LEAFS!!!!!!!

By the way the OP of this thread is a Sabres fan, not a Leafs fan.

Sorry pal, but this is a real situation. Nylander May never play a game again for the leafs. This is what happens when you promise to lock up your core andthen bring in a massive FA signing.

What happens? They'd be in thsi situation with Nylander without Tavares.
You are aware they currently have the 4th highest cap room available amongst teams ?(First if you LTIR Horton).
Nylander is playing for the Leafs soon enough.
Where's the Nick Ritchie hype?

Marner and Matthews would have to sign it and I’m pretty sure they like Toronto way more than any other team.

Yeah cause an American kid born and raised in AZ like Matthews would definitely pass up an opportunity to sign with the Coyotes just to stay in good old Toronto right?

I mean sure he likes it in Toronto but if the Yotes offer him $15M and he's had difficulty negotiating with Dubas like Nylander, then perhaps yes he signs with AZ

You do know if the Leafs have the Coyotees record last season Tavares never even meets with them, right?
Matthews wants to win a cup. He won't go to a broke team that can never win.

this would be smarter if the OP was actually a Leafs fan rather than a Sabres fan

Offer sheets are pure anti-Leaf fantasy.
All are staying. We rock.

That's great. You guys will be top heavy and for a balanced team like the Bruins, you guys are ripe for a mauling.

I roll with the Bill Belichick school of budget management. With the exception of Tom Brady he stays away from paying top dollar for elite players and focuses on building a complete team. A complete team will handily curb stomp a top heavy team most of the time. Having a great player in a salary cap league is a blessing and a curse unless you have excellent management like the Pittsburgh Penguins and New England Patriots.

Wow this post is honestly one of the most garbage takes I’ve ever seen. [mod]

Without JT, the leafs get an opportunity to lock up Nylander at the term and value that he believes he’s worth. Pretty simple concept. They can’t have a team if JT, AM, marner and Nylander are all locked up at maximun value.

The team has already said players are going to have to sacrifice if they want to keep the team together. WhAt if. And just maybe. Toronto alone isn’t a great enough city to get players to sacrifice millions of dollars to stay there?

You mean like how the Bruins won in the 3rd period of game 7 with Kadri suspended 3 games, Matthews and Nylander being terrible, no Tsavares, and Andersen providing the worst goaltending any playoff team had?

So you expect all of that to repeat itself + Tavres has no impact.

Good luck with that.

Not sure the top heavy thing works much anymore, as the Leafs can roll two solid top lines and a third that can contribute as well. Leafs are unlikely to meet Boston in the playoffs as either team is likely to be top in the conference.

As for the offer sheets, no reason for AM34 or Marner to sign them, Toronto is the place to be for them for the foreseeable future.

They would never give him 8-8.5 million. That's garbage. With or without TAvares they are srill in this situation.

It's great what Nylander and his daddy think they are worth. The issue is Larkin just signed for 6.1 million per.

And my take was horrible?

Guaranteed Nylander is not signed still if Tavares stays in LOng Island. They are not going to simply give players an absurd contract because they asked, Who is the Leafs GM, Chiarelli?
