That’s part of the lack of depth. Players weren’t prepared.
Why did they trade for Petan anyway?
I think Petan was more of a move for the 2019-2020 season with Dubas looking at potentially losing one of Kappy/Mango via trade or Marleau/Brown as cap dumps and then Petan can slide in as a cheap 4th line option.

not surprising Hyman kept getting the ice time he did with his Dad behind the bench but i'm left to wonder why Shanny didn't step in and do something about it

Hoping he has a speedy recovery, proved to be a solid all round player this past season

Dam. That sucks.

I have torn my ACL before and I can tell you, it takes ALOT longer then 6 months to recover. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s out until at least the ASB.

It takes 6 months just to get used to walking doing daily routines.

I guess they have a pretty good medical staff to work on it.
I expect him to be back in october.

My bad, I thought you were referring to why he was playing at all. I'm guessing no one really knew he was injured, and if they did, than whoever let him play is a moron.
No worries. He didn't skate with the team for the morning skate. Petan was in his place. You would think they must have known something, but who knows.

....Hyman didn't even know how bad...

I mean the Leafs do have a medical staff right? I take some of what I siad back if Hyman didn't even know the extent, but it was still clear something was up.

So people think that they knew he had a torn ACL and played him anyways as opposed to the much more reasonable option of he just didn't tell them? They knew he was banged up, but who isn't banged up in the playoffs.

The lengths people go to attack Babcock is ridiculous. He's not the teams doctor or nurse, he's the coach. If you want to blame someone blame the medical staff or blame MLSE for not having better injury detection.

He doesn’t need to be our worst forward.

He was invisible in both games though and our PK wasn’t good.

Heck, even if he and Moore or Ennis just switched places at 5v5. Brings his minutes waaaay down and would have helped Marner and Tavares as well.

Hyman, with a tor new ligament, played more at 5v5 than Matthews did at Game 7.

It’s just inexcusable coaching.

Why the hell do we have this giant “Sports Science” department? Not one of them said “maybe we shouldn’t give the go ahead for someone with a torn ligament to play?”

Not sure what you're going on about now... I was responding to your post about how Petan should have replaced Hyman... now you're switching narratives.

Are people forgetting that Matthews' line was weak for two goals that game... they weren't having their best game... thats probably why Hyman saw more ice time....

Responding to your sports science comment now, I'd expect that our medical staff would have been confident the tear would have got worse... Or Hyman hid the extent of the injury from them... I don't know...

On the contrary, I think the length you go to to make excuses for him is the most ridiculous thing of all

This is what I don't get. Teams let players play through major injuries....broken ribs, hands, collapsed lung, torn ligaments. How can you expect a player who is seriously hurt to perform at a capable NHL level. It just makes no sense and puts the player in a spot to make the injury worse and possibly career ending. Jesus, just play your extra forwards and bump capable guys like Ennis and Moore up the line up.

T.O.
The same thing happened when we lost to the Canes in the 2002 Conference Finals. We had a few guys playing injured and it probably cost us the series.

I will never understand the rationale for this. It's better to have less talented players in their place at 100%.

Absolutely should have at the very least took on a reduced role/reduced TOI... Hyman looked like absolute dog shit in this series but atleast he had a valid excuse, a torn ACL is nasty.

Taking faceoffs and playing main PK against Bergeron??! Like how f***ing stupid are you Babcock? No wonder the Bruins PP murdered us. Good god is this coach incompetent.

They knew he had a torn ACL. I hobbled around for 3 months, went to see a specialist and within 1 minute of manipulating my knee he had pulled out the forms for me to have ACL surgery. There is no way they didn't identify this. If braced you can still perform with a torn ACL to a certian level. Your lateral movement is shot though.

Leafs knew damn well that Hyman was injured. This was about no further damage could have been done, Hyman agreeing to play through the pain cause it was playoffs and proving the warrior that he is. Anyone thinking other then this, is ludicrous. But with this being said, it points yet again how pathetic Babcock is, that he knew how injured Hyman was and still utilized him along side Tavares-Marner when he could have double shifted Matthews instead in game 7 giving Hyman rest for key times.

No they didn't know, Hyman didn't even know. Again this is on the medical team, they clear players to play not Babcock.
