Granted I didn’t watch much of the Leafs this season, but it appeared at least to my neutral eye, that Hyman was one of their best players in the series against the Canadiens.

he wasn't

it's the great trick of zach hyman

he skates hard, always tries his best. he battles hard for the puck and he will often win... but when he does win the puck battle, he is fairly incapable of making a pass or scoring. There are times he does it but very inconsistent. He's a pretty fat negative (offensively) to the lines he plays on. A complete black hole. Like he has difficulty making simple passes in general... when he does it's usually by mistake.

he's a fantastic PK guy. he's a fantastic empty net specialist. he sets a great example for effort. he's not very poor defensively because he's usually never unable to outskate and outwork his problems.

unfortunately, at least the situations he was placed in... being a top line winger, he doesn't get results.

he's the ultimate 3rd line winger.. and for the brief moment of the last 5 years that he was used correctly in that position with other similar players, that line was unstoppable.

Babcock and Keefe wasted both his potential as an essential cog for a potential championship and wasted the potential of his linemates and therefore our offense... and now he's going to get paid largely due to being on a line with 2 of the most talented players in the league and ultimately will be playing elsewhere to the disappointment of both leafs fans and the receiving team alike.

He was misused.

Now he's going to be way overpaid.

In the future, he'll likely be bought out.

Good for him, though. He's going to be rolling in money and he's a kind hearted person and writes kids books on the side. the great trick of zach hyman is going to pay off in spades.

but at no point he was anywhere close to our best player, it's the illusion from how he plays. he's everywhere, he's skating hard, he's always in your face... but he's not a top line hockey player. he's just zach hyman.

the biggest issue with our offense at 5v5 from our first line was never really matthews and marner.it was hyman. (or rather coaches being dumb af) Leafs score a lot at 5v5... like a LOT. But for some weird reason in the playoffs and this happens from time to time... Matthews will be consistently deep in the zone to start the breakout, Marner on the wall/defensive blue line and Hyman would be the one sprinting down the ice as the outlet. So who naturally gets the puck the majority of the time in said breakout? Either Hyman by outlet or expected to be Hyman by dump in. This was a massive issue because as I said earlier he's incapable of making plays. He works best when he causes shit and sometimes he'll be there to clean up the garbage. But when he's consistently the one having to secure the zone? lol the play is dead before it even started. That's also why he was always there, always hunting, always checking... because we ran our plays backwards. So he looked impressive and did absolutely nothing the entire time and killed a large portion of our ability to gain meaningful zone time.

So as a Leafs fan? I'm sad we're losing the best 3rd line winger we've only used for 3 games in that position for. But I'm sure as hell not sad about some other team getting a $5 million anchor of a contract.

Good summary.

He is a good bottom 6 like we have Lehky and Armia.

He could consider himself lucky that he is playing in a big market with lots of publicity. In a small market, nobody would care and no one would see him as a 5 million solution.

I would take him at 3x3 and it stops there. Anyone else wants to pay him whatever can do so.....

3.5 is probably my max

The contract will definitely suck, but at least there's a useful player in there no matter what. As long as his legs stay healthy, he'll always be useful. He doesn't have anything else to lose.
