Google is finally getting around to laying down fiber lines in our neighborhood, but I’m bummed because the $50 plan is gone. They did our old neighborhood last year, and from what we heard it was a clusterf***… digging through a lot of people’s sewer lines and whatnot, and then dragging their feet on fixing them. Now I’m less excited about having another option and more worried about them busting something. Hopefully they found a new crew who knows what they’re doing.

I'm thinking of trying T-Mobile home internet. 5g is definitely the future; I'm ready to see if it's also the present.

No its not the present, right now they dont really have the infrastructure to support wide spread 5G use. They say they do but the truth of the matter is the more broad ban being used the lower the signal strength the lower the signal people on the edge of the tower start to lose reception. Just had a big webinar with Resideo pro security and both an AT&T and a Verizon Rep, they spent the first half explaining that, than trying to back peddle how this effects customers near the end of a towers range.

For me, the question is not "is it full 5G". It is obviously not. The question is "will it be as good as the absolute trash I get from Spectrum, who is down 5-10 minutes every single day." And the answer might well be "yes". If I can get 30M down, which they say is the minimum, then I'll do it. f*** Spectrum and their monopoly of shit.

If they subcontract to the same people who tore up my yard to put in a new spectrum line to the neighbors distribution box….. those clowns had no respect for my property. Went way inside the utility easement, and left their stuff all over my front yard. My dog left them a present on it.

But every company subcontracts out, ATT uses Ansco in North Carolina for the most part.

It's a common complaint. The ISPs don't resond well; they are farming it out like you say. Can't find a link to the local story but it was similar to this. Fiber installed through his sewer line which kept backing sewage up into his house.

What’s weird is that at our farm, which is very rural, Spectum quoted me $32K to get internet even though it runs down the road about 600 feet away.

For the past 5 years, I just used LTE on my phone as a hotspot which worked ok.

This year, I suddenly get 5G UW and it seems to be just as good as Spectrum internet at home.

Weird that this rural spot is getting 5GUW, but I’ll take it.

When AT&T put their fiber into our old neighborhood, they cut through my irrigation system. They were great though in terms of getting it fixed. Submitted a claim with no hassles.

Are you within 1500m of a UW tower?

I tried getting AT&T fiber but the tech they sent out here was clueless and/or lazy and didn't know how to run it to our 70 year old house without it looking like a complete hackjob. So I will stick with shitty comcast for the time being. I am interested in going mobile only but they still seem to have data caps, like just streaming Canes games and a weekly TV show or two each month will eat up all your data then you get throttled into oblivion.

T-mobile home internet specifically does not have caps or slowdowns; that's the first thing I checked for

Dollar jumps to a 20-year high

Russian stocks drop 4%

Oil prices jump again

He’s turning this into a political feedback loop. Iraq comparisons are giving way to Viet Nam comparisons.

He's trying to balance all the various factions, and he can't.

He also thinks he can outwait the West, and he can't do that either.

Time to hand over ATACMS and let Ukraine hit targets in Crimea, the Kerch bridge in particular.

Yep. This whole adventure probably seemed like a good plan when framed as a 72-hour bull rush into Kiev. What it's turned into is not manageable. The best thing Putin can hope for is that some other crisis emerges which would require the West's resources and attention, so that he can grind his way to being king of the ashes.

He's probably playing the long game and seeing if he can make it to the next set of major elections in the west. Can he make it to 2024 and maybe get a servile friendlier US administration. If that were to happen, the I think the economic hardships in Europe, coupled with a lack of a leadership role from the US, would lead to some of the coalition of willing to become a lot more open to forcing Ukraine to surrender some territories.

Out side of a little money and some equipment we are throwing towards Ukraine, how much friendlier of a US administration can he get? Biden is basically pointing his finger and saying "Bad". He is putting forth a stronger reaction to threatened actions against Taiwan.

I think you are underselling the numbers of both of these things quite a bit. But in addition to those things, the sharing of actionable intelligence is also been key to preparations for defensive actions early in the war, and for offensive actions more recently. Also, the Biden administration has done a lot of work to rally the NATO (and non-NATO) "western" nations to strong sanctions and deployments that must make the Russians take note.

"partial mobilization" seems to be like him calling up the inactive reserves, or the red army equivalent of it, anyway. Conscripted troops fighting against their will tend to perform terribly.

The other effect could be an ally (NK, CCP) causes a problem elsewhere that results in support , both material and monetary, for ukraine, to slow. This kind of mobilization does not help him, except maybe to secure the areas he already has with extra troops.

He's running low on hardware. a couple hundred thousand conscripts with AK's, zerg rushing HIMARS / ATACMS and air support should go swimmingly well for him.

Supposedly there are 35km lines at the Finnish border to get out, Russian airlines aren’t allowed to sell tickets to men, and some protests tonight.

Finnish officials can bullshit too, though, so there's that. It has been a fiery political topic in Finland whether the Russian border can be closed if there is a hybrid action where Putin pushes masses of asylum seekers forward. I wouldn't count on everything being truthful when Finnish officials message to the citizens.

Here is a webcam pointing east from the Vaalimaa border station at the southern Russian border:

There's lines of cars, but I have no idea what is the regular situation. The pic is limited.

Even if Trump manages to get elected in 2024 and Russia makes it that long, which they won't, the very best case scenario for Russia now is that they somehow, by some miracle, hold on to some of what they've taken, and they end up with hostile forces on all Western borders that absolutely will not forget nor forgive, a permanently diminished market for their oil, and NATO members on all sides (you think that NATO won't accept Ukraine once they join the EU?) And don't expect Belarus to hold out forever, either. Once Lukashenko is gone, all bets are off.

The economic hardships will pass. Europe has one rough winter to adjust to, and then that card will be gone, forever.
