Meh. That's always the way it is. New guy > old guy. Shiny new toy until he proves it otherwise
Even Laine's specialty (and basically the only thing he's great at) Kakko scored 5 more goals in 1 less game than Laine did in the same league at the same age.
Laine
GP: 46
G: 17
A: 16
PTS: 33

Kakko
GP: 45
G: 22
A: 16
PTS: 38

And Kakko is a way better skater, with way better hands, a way higher compete level, way better defensively, way better at playmaking, and he's way harder to knock off the puck. What argument is there that would put Laine ahead of Kakko at the same stage of their development?

So you think Kakko is going to approach 40 goals as a rookie?

Assuming Hughes sticks with the NHL team, I expect him to score about 36 points. Kakko about 72.

i'll go with around 45-49 points for Hughes, I do think he will struggle a bit at even strength and may not get as much opportunities his 1st year on the PP with Hall, Hischier, Palmieri and Gusev on team. I'm guessing he'll get Gusev on his wing who is unproven and maybe more of a physical presence on the other wing since both Gusev and Hughes are small. Going from the USHL to the NHL is a massive jump that, correct me if i'm wrong, has never really been done before. There will be a lot of adjustments to make, I think anyone thinking he'll just come in and score like Matthews and Laine did their 1st year is in for some disappointment as both played against men their draft year and were far more physically developed. Even Hischier level production can't be expected since Hischier got to play with Hall when he put up a hart worthy season. I doubt Hughes sees much time with Hall this year, though he may get Palmieri.

For Kakko I'll go with around 50-55 points, I think he gets to play right away on the top line with opposite Panarin. More NHL ready as well since he was playing against men last year.

I have Hughes with around 35-40 and Kakko with 60-65

I don't expect Hughes to play a full season, this year will be 100 percent about his development but 2020 he'll come ready and more able to do well. I compare it a big to a higher end Q Hughes, Q Hughes is a great player but needed to round his edges a bit development wise so he could be successful.

Are you saying he needed to get rid of his WIDE TURNS?

Probably low 50's for Hughes. High 50's for Kakko, potentially 60.

Solid rookie seasons, but nothing earth shattering.

I am wondering if all these posters using size as a reason for Hughes not being as ready follow the modern NHL... Like we are in a league where Marner is a dominant winger and made the NHL at 165 pounds, and Debringcat is 5 foot 7 and 165 and just scored 40 goals.

Now, you can dislike the player for other reasons, but his size is a really bad one.

I chose the 50-59 option for both players, though I could see low to mid 60s if everything goes perfectly.

I'm just hoping Hughes will make the NHL one day.

Kakko is a lock for 100 points.. probably like 78 goals.

Both in the 50’s. They’re both going to have a bit of an adjustment, Kakko to the NA ice and Hughes to being 170 lbs in a men’s league. But they’ll get it going late.

@Favin, can I get an answer to my question from last week? I've asked you now four times. You insisted on picking apart my post, and telling me I was wrong. When asked for evidence, you've went quiet.

For me personally size isn't an issue.

I just think that he's gonna be better suited as a winger at the NHL level and he's gonna play a perimeter centric game. I hope he succeeds and will happily eat crow if he proves me wrong tho.

How many points do you think Jack Hughes and Kaapo Kakko will have in their first seasons after the draft?

* Make two selections - one for each player
* If you have a specific number in mind, list in comments below
* Year two (2020-21) projections also welcome
* Only counting regular season NHL points for 2019-20
