Just a random question, I've just started with another team and I need to choose my Jersey number but my usual one has already been taken (#10)
How did you guys/gals choose yours?

Great question.

I always had number 8 because of Mark Recchi.

As a Habs fan it seems a little tarnished to me now though...

I chose 36 because its the number of monsters or, "bakemono" in Japanese mythology.
In hockey I always tried to sort of transform into an alter ego that is much less gentle, friendly and kind that I am in my everyday life and the number 36 came out of that mindset.

I used to take 66 when I was younger and played in actual leagues, however now I feel like a tool using it so I've switched to 55 as 5 has always been my favourite number and I've always liked having double-numbers (11,22,33,44...)

I was a huge football fan growing up. I was a fan of Derrick Thomas (#58) of the KC Chiefs and of course Jerry Rice (#80), hence 580. Figured 80 was too popular to have as a sports number so I went with 58.

#10 -> Marian Gaborik
When #10 is used, #19 -> Jonathan Toews

Originally I got #10 just by an accident, but I've decided to keep it. (If possible, ten is often used, as OP said). Also 10 is the number that is usually given to a playmaker in soccer, and I like to think that I'm sort of a playmaker.

I became a huge fan of Al MacInnis when he was with Calgary and a bigger fan when he was traded to STL. I've always worn #2 (except my first two years of HS because an upper classmen had it already).

Never been too concerned with what number I wear, but mostly wore/wear 93 (for Gilmour) and 13 (for Sundin).

12 as I started later than most of the kids and that was all that was left in my hick town. When it comes to numbers my biggest pet peeve is forwards that wear 3,4,5,6 Its like seeing a defenceman wear 9 or 19.

Pick what you want though. Its your number. Has anyone ever seen a goalie wear anything but 1, 30, 29,35 ect........ beer league doesnt count.:laugh:

I've worn two jersey numbers through my hockey career (when I had a choice). I wore number 16 as a tribute to the greatest Nordique (Peter Stastny) and the greatest Avalanche (Joe Sakic). I wear number 2 because it's one of my favourite numbers, and when my mom immigrated from Vietnam they had to put down birthdates for everyone, since noone really remembered when they were they just chose the second day of every month (my mom comes from a rather large family).

I was the enforcer on my hockey teams. Whenever I would get a penalty, I would say I got 86ed. Luckily, I drew more penalties than I commited, so I didn't mind when the team said I should start wearing 86.
