How can Matthews put himself in the convo with McDavid as “Best young player”?

Stamkos was talked about a lot before the goals dropped off. 2009-2011 he was definitely in the conversation for best player. If Matthews leads the league in goals 2-3 year in a row he would be in the conversation. At the very least it would make it a lot more close.

Matthews is a Superstar, and McDavid is a generational talent. Nothing wrong with that. Just enjoy what you have and be thankful.

Malkin in 11/12 >>>>>> Stamkos in 11/12.

Take away Crosby from Malkin and he = OV and Crosby at their best.

Matthews would need to put up constantly 45-50g, 90 pt seasons with very good playoff performances taking his team deep year over year. He will never have the talent McDavid does but if gets a reputation as more clutch, better leader and better all around player; he will be in the conversation for some.

Crosby right now is probably the closest we'll come for the next 5+ years to someone in the discussion with McDavid. There isn't always an OV to the Crosby of a period.
