Delaware Park rebounded in 2020 from what I -- and many -- thought was a sluggish 2019. The track will have a 77-day meet which runs from May 26, 2021 - October 16, 2021.

The Stronach Group now has pink on the starting gate for the Pegasus World Cup. Why?! It is bad enough the new box scheme on the various track simulcast feeds is a notch below what was replaced. Laurel had an identity with the black-yellowy/orange and white but is now different shades of pink. Golden Gate lost its appeal. And Santa Anita's light green in hideous. The logo for 1/st bet is an eyesore, too. Now the starting with the Pegasus in pink. And advertising, too. Whoever designed these images must not have conducted horse racing fans. Oh well, at least the Group has ideal racing on many days and that is what matters most.

And now for the draws...

Early analysis, locals in Zayas + Joseph drew the far outside with Math Wizard. That isn't ideal but they are both schooled on the track. Saez/Pletcher the same with the Turf.

Code of Honor is my pick on dirt. The turf race needs more scrutiny.

$3,000,000 race

$1,000,000 race

  • Todd Pletcher has light entries until Saturday when 13 of his horses are entered at Gulfstream. He could reach $400,000,000 ($400 million) earned by the end of this month. He is approximately $1.11 million from becoming the first trainer in North America history to reach that sum.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Luis Rivera is ten wins away from 2,000.
Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Antonio Gallardo is five wins away from 2,000.
  • Handle: $3 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 10: Romario (Luis Saez/Mark Passley) got his nose up in time to bring down the house for one fortunate handicapper who hit the $.20 Rainbow 6 jackpot for $636,311.50. The $.50 Pick 5 returned over $45,000 which is an enormous sum in itself. The winning trainer sends out horses infrequently but today he is Woody Stevens/Bob Baffert/Todd Pletcher/et al in the eyes of the successful bettor.

  • Rainbow 6: There will be a mandatory payout on Sunday With the exhilarating field on Saturday, if not hit, Sunday will offer a significant sum.
  • Replay show:

  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. has a 1-win lead in the riders' standings with 50 victories at this meet. Luis Saez's total of 49 is next. Paco Lopez is next with 46.
  • Junior Alvarado added three wins to his total. I mention Junior often as a personal favorite and how he struggled in the early days of his first attempt in Gulfstream's winter meet. But he is too good of a rider and his strikes have become more common the past few days. One of the wins today was 18-to-1 and the others paid over $12. He is now 8th in wins at the meet but his 43% hitting the board is actually better than Luis Saez, second at the meet in wins who is at 42%. Junior brings home prices and can be used in exotics. This is a tough meet.
  • Handle: $7.2 million.

Saturday at Gulfstream. Soak in the sunshine, weather calls for clear skies and high temps around 80. The day should be thrilling from morning to evening. Over $5,000,000 in prizes being distributed. The pools should be enormous. Some tickets are reportedly going for $1,000 a pop. About 140 horses will run.

Enjoy America's best winter East coast track. The Pegasus World Cup has arrived!

Friday's opener at Oaklawn (Arkansas) has arrived. Always a fun journey.

Race 8 is a Kentucky Derby prep.

The favorite in the first race is a British Columbia bred who has raced 21 of his 25 lifetime starts in Canada and has seven wins. The 7-year-old has raced three times at Emerald Downs in Washington state and once at Tampa Bay. A perplexing morning line favorite.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $5 million.
  • Race 5: Summer Bourbon (Mike Luzzi/Joseph Parker) gave the jockey his 4th win with 11 rides in 2021. He was 2-for-131 in 2020. Solid recovery for a veteran rider. They know where to go when they need a win.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Luis Saez won with his first three mounts and is now back in first place in the riders' standings this meet.
  • Junior Alvarado had three more victories. He is now seventh at the meet. He has won with six of his past 10 rides.
  • Danny Gargan is 28 12-3-6 (43%/75%). He sent out two horses and both won. I mentioned at the beginning of the meet not to overlook his horses but he has surpassed even my predictions.
  • Replay show:

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Race 7: Lucy Artie (James Graham/Sturges Ducoing) won his third straight race and is among the top horses at the meet. Prior to the streak, he had lost nine straight. The trainer is 80 or so years of age and has been at the track since the 1950s.

Is there any live harness racing left in Maine?
everything goes through the State Harness Racing Commission, hence why I posted that info a few days back, that is contingent on dates, as well as the pandemic.... that meeting had been originally set for tomorrow, but was shifted back to 2/08/21...

as of present Scarborough, in past years, as do other licensees, must submit a presentation asking for what dates they would like to run..... as do the 8 state fairs that have tracks (how that works is usually in conjunction with the fair dates, every year), now with Scarborough gone, the proposal that's being considered outside of that week in September, when Cumberland traditionally would run their meet.... that's in addition to that.... which is why the commercial track licensing which Bangor also has through Penn National.

short answer, there is not live harness racing in Maine once Scarborough concluded their meet in 2020, whether it was pandemic inflicted or not.

Betting for the Pegasus card has begun. A day in advance. The pools are going to be gigantic. The Late Pick 4 (Races 9-12) and Late Pick 5 (Races 8-12) will both have guaranteed pools of $750,000. Those are Pick 4 and Pick 5 pools! If the Pick 6 is not hit today, we are looking at a massive total for Saturday.

And the morning line favorite was not bet at the window and finished fifth. It stood out to me as an outlier.

Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $4.5 million.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Chalk: Six winners in the nine races went off the favorite.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $8.8 million.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. and Luis Saez are duking it out again as expected. Each has 52 wins which leads the meet.
  • Replay show:

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Race 9: Karl Broberg won with his lone starter. He became the first trainer in 2021 to win 20 races across North America. His victory total last year was second in North America.
  • Leading Riders: Mitchell Murrill (41 wins), James Graham (40 wins) and Adam Beschizza (38 wins) are 1-2-3 in a nip-and-tuck battle.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Opening day: The electric meet opened today and runs through Kentucky Derby weekend.
  • Handle: $5 million.
  • Florent Geroux had a 3- win day. Consume these remarkable numbers for 2021: 62 23-14-9 (37%/74%).
  • Race 8: Caddo River (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) spanked the field in the Smarty Jones Stakes, a Kentucky Derby prep, and was awarded 10 points towards entry into the May race. Caddo River won by more than 10 lengths. Bred in Kentucky, Caddo River is out of the stakes-winning Pangburn and is sired by Hard Spun. He is a homebred owned by Arkansas Sports Hall of Famer John Ed Anthony and his Shortleaf Stable. The victory today was his second in four starts.

Sam Houston (Texas):
  • Stewart Elliott, who often rides for Steve Asmussen, enters today with a 14-race losing streak. Both lead their categories at the meet.
  • Lane Luzzi was 4 1-3-0.

Santa Anita (California):

  • Handle: $6 million.
  • Abel Cedillo, one of three riders to win today, led the way with four winners. Umberto Rispoli and Mario Gutierrez won twice apiece. Rispoli's 16 wins are second most to Juan Hernandez's 19.
  • Doug O'Neill entered today a woeful 3-for-46 in 2021 but won three times with four starters. The trifecta today gave him eight victories for the meet which began in December, tied for third most.
  • Pick 6: The sum exceeded $788,000. Tomorrow's card will begin at $608,000 and with the betting windows expected to be hot across America due to the Pegasus Card at Florida, the total should easily surpass today's mark.

  • Steve Asmussen won eight times at four tracks and finished 14 8-0-1 with cards ongoing. He leads North America with 27 wins in 2021.
  • Brad Cox sent out 10 horses and won four times across three tracks.
  • Joel Rosario has earned more than $2.8 million in 2021.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Jose Lezcano had four wins. He went back-to-back twice including the early daily double. He is in second at the meet in wins and even so I thought he would be closer to first place than where he places currently.
  • Race 3: Mr. Buff (Kendrick Carmouche/John Kimmel) won the $100,000 Jazil Stakes.
  • Race 4: Kendrick Carmouche went back-to-back.
  • Race 9: Kendrick Carmouche rode his third winner. He is the leading rider at the meet by a comfortable margin.
  • Handle: Over $8 million.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Race 1: Awfully Foxy (Leonardo Corrujo/Derrick Parram) won at 19-to-1 and the longest shot on the board.
  • Race 2: Suzzette Star (Leonardo Corrujo/Derrick Parram) won at 14-to-1, the second longest shot on the board. The surprise $1 daily double winning connections paid $385.20. Parram has never had more than three winners in any year, he is 2-for-4 in 2021.
  • Race 3: Find Your Boat (Luis Garcia/Charlie DeMario) was the longest shot on the board and won at 40-to-1. The $.50 Pick 3 paid over $6,900.
  • Race 4: The $.50 Pick 3 paid $87 with another bomber. It paid out to those who hit two of the three legs. No one had a Pick3! That shows the uniqueness of these results.
  • Race 5: Even with chalk prevailing, the $.50 Pick 5 paid over $25,000.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $4.5 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $40 million+ which is the third highest for this card's brief history. Limited attendance permitted
  • Tyler Gaffalione (4 wins), Irad Ortiz, Jr. (2) and Joel Rosario (2) won multiple times. Todd Pletcher went 13 3-3-1. A 3-win day.
  • Race 1: Toffen (Joe Bravo/Brian Lynch) won the opener at 8-to-1 -- bet down from a 15-to-1 m/l -- as she held off a charging Apurate (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) who was sent off the favorite. If the opening race pool is an indication -- and it does set the tone -- more than $2.6 million was bet and a big day awaits About half that is a race 1 typical pool.
  • Race 2: Another Duke (Paco Lopez/Michael Yates) won at 7-to-1.
  • Race 3: Microsecond (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) won at 8-to-1. Mike Repole winning owner.
  • Race 4: Performer (Joel Rosario/Shug McGaughey) won the $125,000 Grade 3 Fred Hooper Stakes at 4-to-5 despite a tough battle from determined Eye of a Jedi (Marcos Meneses/Steve Budhoo). Rosario is at his best in such situations.
  • Race 5: Olympic Runner (Tyler Gaffalione/Mark Casse) got up just in time to finish a dramatic effort. More than $2.5 million bet in the pool.
  • Race 6: Prevalence (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) was as dominant as any horse I have seen in a debut race in quite some time at Gulfstream. Under a hand ride halfway through, the jockey knew he had something special and then the horse still managed to kick it up a notch to win by more than 8 lengths. At 7-to-1, a son to Medaglia d'Oro.

  • Race 7: Zofelle (Tyler Gaffalione/Brendan Walsh) gave the rider a natural hat trick after winning the Grade 3 Marshua's River Stakes. The Irish-bred was winless in four starts last year.
  • Race 8: Always Shopping (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the $125,000 Grade 3 La Prevoyante Stakes. Mike Repole, owner, with his second win on this card. Over $4.7 million bet into the pool.
  • Race 9: Pacific Gale (John Velazquez/John Kimmel), cold at the window at 16-to-1, won the $200,000 Grade 2 Inside Information Stakes. She ended a 17-race losing streak and won for the first time since August 2018.
  • Race 10: Tide of the Sea (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) won the $150,000 Grade 3 William McKnight. The winner went to the lead and played possum in a brilliant strategic maneuver by the rider once he hooked up with the trainer's other runner Temple (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Michael Maker). Perhaps the race of the day to date.
  • Race 11: Colonel Liam (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Todd Pletcher) won the Grade I $1,000,000 Pegasus World Cup turf. Colonel Liam is 6 4-0-1 lifetime. He held off Largent (Paco Lopez/Todd Pletcher) in a close finish. Pletcher is closing in on $400 million earned after his third win on the card. The winning horse cost $1.25 million and is owned by Missouri-based Robert and Lawana Low.
  • Race 12: Knicks Go (Joel Rosario/Brad Cox) won the $3,000,000 Pegasus World Cup. It was a fourth straight win for the horse sent off as the 6-to-5 favorite who wired the field. The Maryland bred is owned by the Korea Racing Authority. An automatic entry to next month's $20 million Saudi Cup in Saudi Arabia was received by the connections of Knicks Go.
  • Replay show:

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • James Graham had a 3-win day and is tied for meet lead with Mitchell Murrill who won twice. Both have 43 wins.
  • Race 3: After scratches, the field was reduced to three.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $6.4 million.
  • Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen won three times as a team.
  • Race 2: Florent Geroux won for the fifth time in his past eight mounts.
  • Race 6: Silver State (Ricardo Santana, Jr./Steve Asmussen) won the $150,000 Fifth Season Stakes in a thrilling stretch battle with Hunka Burning Love (David Cabrera/Karl Broberg).

  • Race 8: Getridofwhatailsu (Joe Rocco, Jr./Brad Cox) won the $150,000 Pippen Stakes in a charging finish. Vault (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) never left the gate and was the favorite.
  • David Cohen and Martin Garcia are a combined 26 0-2-4. Garcia recently returned from a lengthy injury-related absence.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $8.7 million.
  • Race 2: The Great One (Abel Cedillo/Doug O'Neill), the horse named after Wayne Gretzky and owned by Erik Johnson of the Colorado Avalanche, broke his maiden in his fifth try and demolished the short field of four by 14 lengths. A $185,000 purchase tastes glory. Fenway (Victor Espinoza/Bob Baffert) was sent off the favorite but the $650,000 New York -- an enormous sum for a New York bred -- finished dead last in his debut.

  • Race 7: Wildman Jack (Abel Cedillo/Doug O'Neill) won the $200,000 Grade 3 Palos Verdes Stakes by more than four lengths at 5-to-1. A strong effort.
  • Doug O'Neill had two wins. He has won five of nine the past two days.

Damn, what a ride by Gaffalione in the 5th and from the 12 post, not an easy task at Gulf.

Fox Sports 1 has its broadcast underway. New York and maybe Tampa Bay and Oaklawn could be shown.

Holy everything. What a debut performance by Prevalence in race 6. Tyler Gaffalione went back-to-back and has a downright monster. This horse was under a hand ride most of the way and still opened it up in an absolute romp. At 7-to-1, a son to Medaglia d'Oro. As good a debut as I have seen at Gulf this year.

Here come the accolades...
