I would expect TVG to be even more top heavy with California racing than normal. Santa Anita has graded stakes of interest.

Gulfstream's Pick 6 will be enormous. I am usually good at gauging the estimated total of the Pick 6 on mandatory payout days. This one is tougher than the norm. $5-6 million?

Broadcast schedule for Saturday, January 9, 2021. All posted time is subject to change.

One of the appealing and irresistible urges of meets such as the Gulfstream Champion Meet is seeing the expensive horses make debuts or race in MSW (maiden special weight) events.

There are three MSW races today and four horses who have $550,000+ price tags attached to them.
  • Race 3: Lamutanaatty (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown) was bought for $750,000 in 2019. The 3-year-old son to Into Mischief is owned by Shadwell Stable which is run by the Deputy Ruler (Sheik Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum) of Dubai, UAE.
  • Race 5: Untreated (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) was bought for $550,000 in 2019. The 3-year-old son of Nyquist is owned by the estate of Paul Pompa who passed away late last year at 62.
  • Race 7: First Task (Luis Saez/ Todd Pletcher) was bought for $725,000 in 2019. The 3-year-old son of Uncle Mo is owned by heavyweights Repole Stable (Mike Repole of Vitamin Water fame), St. Elias Stable (Vinny Viola, Florida Panthers), Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith (UK-based).
  • Race 7: Rosenquist (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Chad Brown) was bought for $750,000 in 2019. The 3-year-old son of Uncle Mo is owned by Peter Brant (publisher, film producer and perhaps most notably an art collector) and Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor and Derrick Smith (UK-based).

  • Umberto Rispoli is 24 9-2-2 (38%/54%) in 2021.
  • Alexander Crispin has 14 wins (40%/77%). He is an apprentice jockey. He leads North America in victories
  • Joel Rosario is the runaway leader in the money earned category this year at over $619,000.
  • Chad Brown's barn is 13 8-0-1 (62%/69%) in 2021.
  • Chris Hartman also has a hot barn. He is 12 5-2-3 (42%/83%) in 2021.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: Over $8 million bet.
  • Trevor McCarthy entered today with two wins in 2021. He doubled his year output after today's 2-win day.
  • Race 1: Iova (Luis Cardenas/Horacio DePaz), a 3-year-old filly, broke her maiden in her debut and paid $51.50. Van Halen fans rejoice! Cardenas began 2021 with 22 straight losses until a win yesterday.
  • Race 3: Our Last Buck (Kendrick Carmouche/Michelle Nevin) won the $100,000 Say Florida Sandy Stakes. Cold on the board at 6-to-1, the 7-year-old gelding won for the sixth time in 18 starts.
  • Race 7: Sneakiness (Mike Luzzi/Linda Rice) was put up to victory following a DQ to Siena Magic (Eric Cancel/Bob Dunham). The winner was sent off at 13-to-1. Luzzi was a horrific 131 2-9-4 (2%/11%) in 2020, he already has half the wins of that year.
Laurel (Maryland):
  • Alexander Crispin won twice and hit the board with each starter (7 2-4-1). Crispin is 13 6-5-1 the past two days and 21 10-5-3 the past three racing days. Monster numbers.
  • Race 1: Mosler's Image (Alexander Crispin/Michael Trombetta) broke her maiden in her fifth try. A Maryland-bred. The bug rider keeps his sizzling pace. That is his 13th win in 2021, the most in North America.
  • Race 2: Gallinella (Alexander Crispin/Dale Capuano) gave the bug rider his second win in two starts. Make that 14 wins in 2021.
  • Race 7: Horacio DePaz sent out two starters. He won the opener at Aqueduct and this race as well. He is 3-for-3 the past two days.
Mahoning Valley (Ohio):
  • Sonny Leon won every other race (through seven) and finished 8 4-0-0.
  • Race 6: Pablo Creek (Chelsey Keiser/Ivan Vazquez) was the longest shot on the board in a field of ten and won at 28-to-1.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $5 million.
  • Race 1: Gipsey Sorceress (Wilmer Garcia/Chandradat Goberdhan) wired the field at 11-to-1. An 18-to-1 placed. Two of the three longest shots on the board resulted in a $176.40 $1 exacta. That is the 5th lifetime win and first since 2015 for the trainer in 182 starts. Unofficially, 84 straight races without a win.
  • Race 4: The lone first-time starter won at 14-to-1.
  • Race 5: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $25,000.
Gulfstream Park (Florida):
  • Handle: $18.3 million of which $5,353,843 was added to the Rainbow Six.
  • Tyler Gaffalione had a 3-win day including a graded stakes.
  • Race 1: Smirkotch (Carlos Montalvo/Larry Getto), an Arkansas-bred, was bet significantly and won with relative comfort. A 12-to-1 morning line bet down to 3-1.
  • Race 2: Rosas Way (Cristian Torres/Angel Rodriguez), entering off a 10-race losing streak, was bet down to 17-to-1 from a 30-to-1 morning line to win. Two races, two morning line long shots buried.
  • Race 3: Lamutanaatty (Tyler Gaffalione/Chad Brown) was bought for $750,000 in 2019 won his debut. The 3-year-old son to Into Mischief is owned by Shadwell Stable which is run by the Deputy Ruler (Sheik Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum) of Dubai, UAE. Sainthood (Luis Saez/Todd Pletcher) was the tough luck loser. A great battle that could have gone either way. A $1 exacta with Brown and Pletcher and two first-time starters. Gaffalione was masterful here.
  • Race 4: Bluegrass Parkway (Tyler Gaffalione/Michael Maker) and Battalion (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Saffie Joseph) finished in a dead heat for victory. Back-to-back wins for Gaffalione.
  • Race 5: Candy Man Rocket (John Velazquez/Bill Mott), a 3-year-old colt and a $250,000 purchase, won for the first time and in his second start. A $16.40 winner. Velazquez was winless with his last 14 mounts, including 0-for-11 in 2021. Chad Brown's dazzling streak of eight straight wins came to an end. He entered the race 10 8-0-1 in 2021 but finished fifth here.
  • Race 6: Henni Penny (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Kathleen O'Connell) got up in time for victory at 4-to-1. More than $5.35 million was added to the million+ in the Rainbow 6 pool.
  • Race 7: Simovitch (Jose Ortiz/Bill Mott) broke his maiden in his fourth start. Owned and bred privately by Donald Dizney, the Floridian who is CEO of United Medical and has a stadium named after him on the University of Florida campus.
  • Race 8: Citrus Burst (Corey Lanerie/Jeff Engler) won at 10-to-1, half of his morning line. That was a trend today.
  • Race 9: Joe Di Baggio (Paco Lopez/Carlos David) opened it up and "(getting away) with authority" as called by Pete Aieillo. No problems with the distance. He won for the 7th time in 27 starts.
  • Race 10: Ride A Comet (Tyler Gaffalione/Mark Casse) finished in time to win the Grade 3 $100,000 Tropical Turf Stakes in its 43rd edition. Casa Creed (Junior Alvarado/Bill Mott) placed in a close finish. Both were sent off 2-to-1, bet well from their morning lines. Another energetic ride by Gaffalione. Ride A Comet, training well entering the race, has won four straight and is 13 8-0-1 lifetime.
  • Race 11: Grey Charlotte (Edgard Zayas/Victor Barboza, Jr.) won the finale. The $.20 Rainbow Six paid over $14,000 to all winners. The pool exceeded $6 million. The winning combination was 4-3-7-3-3-3.
  • Replay show:

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Adam Beschizza had a 3-win day.
  • Leading riders: Mitchell Murrill (33 wins), James Graham (32), Adam Beschizza (28) and Florent Geroux (27) lead the way.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Over $11 million.
  • Umberto Rispoli had a three-win day including a graded stakes.
  • Race 4: Jan Jan Can (Juan Hernandez/Mike Puype), sixth at the 1/2 mile and a distant third in the stretch, nosed Sweet Sonny (Jessica Pyfer/Brian Koriner) just in time with a driving finish that was storybook-esque.
  • Race 6: Just a Command (Tiago Pereira/Eric Kruljac) was fifth in the stretch and battled to victory at the imposing odds of 99-to-1 (more in a post below). The win paid a staggering $201.50/$93.80/$28.80. That place payout is as high as I have seen. The $1 exacta was an incredible sum of $1,633.40. Funkenstein (Jose Vadivia. Jr./Mike Puype) was runner up as the lone first-time starter in the race at 17-to-1. Now, if someone with a deep wallet and limitless structure used my often-proposed betting strategy of using lone first-time starters but in a most creative way of "wheeling" now we are talking the score of all mother scores. The $.50 trifecta paid $31,000+. The $.10 super paid over $29,000. Again, lone first time starters don't always win but they offer value and when they produce, massive results can happen. No win here and yet stylish bettors would have rejoiced. Then again, someone who did a win bet only would be amongst the most miserable. Replay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wBX-Q6hSd2w
santa-anita-record-payoff.jpg
  • Race 8: Sanenus (Umberto Rispoli/Michael McCarthy) won the $200,000 Grade 3 La Canada Stakes in a 6-length romp, the largest margin in at least 30 years for this race. The Chilean-bred was out for the 12th time and won in the U.S. for the first time in four starts.

  • Race 9: Charmaine's Mia (Drayden Van Dyke/Phil D'Amato) won the $100,000 Grade 3 Las Cienegas Stakes. The winner basically wired the field at 16-to-1, the second largest odds on the board. The 5-year-old daughter to The Factor is 26 5-4-2 lifetime and ended an 8-race losing skid. She had raced 17 times at Woodbine (Ontario) and 8 times at Gulfstream (Florida) prior to this race. Sometimes, smaller purchases can become big scores: She was a $4,000 purchase in 2017, but has earned $232,000. Lighthouse (Umberto Rispoli/Simon Callghan) was DQ'd from third to fifth.

Alexander Crispin should win the bug of the year (2020) and the jockey of the year (2021). No need to contest the nominations. The next 11 months are futile. :sarcasm:

He...
  • ended the day 7 2-4-1.
  • hit the board with each starter.
  • is 13 6-5-1 the past two days.
  • is 21 10-5-3 the past three racing days.
  • has 14 wins in 2021 which is the most in North America.
Maryland-based riders have captured 11 of the 46 Eclipse Awards as champion apprentice, the most recent being Weston Hamilton in 2018. Other winners are Chris McCarron (1974), Ronnie Franklin (1978), Alberto Delgado (1982), Allen Stacy (1986), Kent Desormeaux (1987), Mike Luzzi (1989), Mark Johnston (1990), Jeremy Rose (2001), Ryan Fogelsonger (2002) and Victor Carrasco (2013). Hamilton and Carrasco continue to be based in Maryland. (Source: Maryland Jockey Club)

Analysis of the four:

Lamutanaatty: 1-for-1. He was not the favorite at 5-to-2 but won under a steadying job by Gaffalione. Even better on the replay. And make that 8 straight wins for Brown.

Untreated: Sent off the favorite and showed nothing.

First Task and Rosenquist showed nothing in their first starts. They need seasoning.

Race 3 today at Gulf.

An example such as this is why Tyler Gaffalione would be among my finalists for Eclipse Award as top jockey. Even with a $750,000 horse, a jockey can make or break a race and this being a debut is more important. A steady hand and athleticism by Gaffalione in addition to the abilities of the equine athlete was on full display. Watch #2 for a fuller appreciation. Good job.

I imagine this horse could be advanced towards Kentucky Derby preps.

It approached slightly more than I expected. Around $6.5 million was in the pool.

Officially, $5,353,843 was added to the existing pool which was around $1.1 million.

Due to space limitations in the earlier post, here is the replay of the 99-to-1 bomber at Santa Anita. The #12 Ben's a Goalie, out for the second time, was on the lead though tiring and losing stride which set up the dramatic conclusion. Lone first-time starters -- one whom finished second in this race -- are magic when they click but even better if you can connect it to a dream 99-to-1 shot which is about as common as well a 99-to-1 shot winning. $1600+ for a $1 exacta.

  • Todd Pletcher put the hammer down today. He went 11 5-3-0 and won five of the seven races he entered (Aqueduct and Gulfstream combined). He is $1.36 million short of becoming the first individual to earn $400,000,000 in lifetime purse money in North America.
  • Jockey of the Week: Umberto Rispoli, Tyler Gaffalione and Alexander Crispin will be in the talk for Jockey of the Week.
Aqueduct (New York):
  • Handle: $6.6 million.
  • Race 8: Perfect Munnings (Manny Franco/Todd Pletcher) won the $100,000 Rego Park Stakes. Pletcher and Michael Maker both sent out three horses and they finished in the top six spots in a field of eight.

Laurel (Maryland):
  • Alexander Crispin had another multiple-win day. He is..
  • 18 8-5-2 the past three days.
  • is 26 12-5-4 the past four racing days.
  • the winningest rider in North America in 2021 with 16 wins.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $15,000.
  • Handle: $3.6 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $11.2 million.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode four winners. He has 15 wins in 2021.
  • Race 10: Mischevious Alex (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Saffie Joseph) was sent off 4-to-5 and delivered. The 4-year-old son to Into Mischief is 10 5-1-1. He was out for the first time since August with his last victory in the Grade 3 Gotham in March. He got some 2020 Kentucky Derby buzz with the same owners as Afleet Aflex.
  • Leading jockeys at the meet (began in late 2020): Luis Saez has 43 wins and Irad Ortiz, Jr. has 40 wins.
  • Leading trainers at the meet: Todd Pletcher (25 wins) and Michael Maker (18 wins).
  • Replay show:

Fair Grounds (Louisiana):
  • Leading jockey: Mitchell Murrill +2 over his closest challenger James Graham.
  • Leading trainer: Tom Amoss +2 over his closest challenger Ron Faucheux.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $9.4 million.
  • Race 9: Five Pics Please (Umberto Rispoli/John Sadler) won the finale at 29-to-1. Rispoli is second only to Juan Hernandez in wins this meet.
  • Race 8: Qahira (Joel Rosario/Bob Baffert) won the $100,000 Kalookan Queen Stakes. The 5-year-old mare is 8 5-1-0. She was a $365,000 purchase in 2018 by Baoma Corporation (Charlie Chu -- GPS fame). It is her first blacktype win. She finished second in her only graded stakes in her prior race.

Notes:
  • Riyadh-bound: From Santa Anita to Saudi Arabia. Charlatan, trained by Bob Baffert, will race next in the $20,000,000 Saudi Cup on February 20. The Pegasus World Cup at Gulfstream was an option but that would be with just a month layoff from his most previous race.
  • Thousand Words has been retired. He was trained by Bob Baffert.
  • Yoshida, who pulled off the rare feat of Grade I wins on dirt and turf, became a daddy for the first time when Gravata delivered a baby boy yesterday (Jan. 9). Yoshida bred with 148 mares in 2020.
  • Martin Garcia, out for about two months with an injury, is expected to return for Oaklawn's opener in less than two weeks.
  • Javier Castellano, who had planned hip surgery in late 2020, is looking at a February return.

KEENELAND SALES: Monday, January 11, 2021
Hip-26-Yearling-Colt-by-Munnings-475000.jpeg

Looking at Day One of the sales which ended earlier this evening, the top seller is a $475,000 Munnings yearling, a colt, by Larry Best (Boston Scientific exec; OXO Equine) though that is lower than many of his past buys.

On Monday he made three purchases for $980,000 total which led all buyers. The three were among the 11 largest purchases. Best bought 17 head for $7 million at the November sale.

All-in-all, the sales were steady at the Keeneland opener. Over $12 million spent on 302 head.

The sale runs Monday through Thursday of this week. The catalog and live video link is here: Keeneland Sale Video

Day 2 of the Keeneland sales...

Paul Pompa, who passed away at age 62 due to a heart attack late last year, has his estate up for sale. White Birch Farm just bought an Animal Kingdom mare for $925,000.

The mare is Regal Glory who is 11 6-3-0 in her racing career. She won at the most recent Kentucky Downs meet.

If I recall correctly, White Birch Farm is Peter Brant's outfit in Connecticut. Polo being the primary interest. Brant is married to Stephanie Seymour. He is an avid art collector.

Now confirmed, the plan is to continue racing the horse.

A 9-year-old Ontario-bred just sold for $875,000. Southern Ring, a Grade 3 winner who earned $343,000 when she ran.

She is pregnant.

Edit (merged posts)

That pregnant mare could be Maryland bound based on the buyers. Phil Schoenthal -agent-trainer.

Yup, representing Matt Dorman of Determined Stud -- Maryland through and through.

Another $925,000 purchase. This time Gainesway Farm, home to Afleet Alex and Tapit. Make room for...Danceforthcause. An unraced 10-year-old Ontario-bred who was sold by Sam-Son as they have a dispersal sale ongoing. The mare is a daughter to Giant's Causeway.

She is pregnant to Twirling Candy.

They're going to August now? Is this a covid-related thing?
