John Sadler faced the music. It is an unsavory side of the business. Umberto Rispoli has overcome much in his short time in America. I have not seen any comments from him but it is unfortunate. There are plenty of these stories in racing history. Joel Rosario removed from Forever Unbridled at the Breeders' Cup for John Velazquez. Riders, too, have given up mounts when having choices. But plenty of us were pulling for Rispoli and that adds to the resentment.

Rispoli issued a remark in an admirable way.

I mentioned Wesley Ward a few times. This is the time of the year he especially shines since babies are seeing tracks for the first time in competition. Not all his success is limited to two-year-olds. Today, he entered horses at Gulfstream, Belmont and Keeneland and went a collective 9 5-2-0. He won five of the six races he entered (multiple runners in three). He was an exceptional 6 4-1-0 at Keeneland. He is four wins shy of 2,000 in his career.

  • he is 18 8-4-2 (44%/78%) with 2-year-olds in 2021.
  • he is 38 16-5-4 (42%/66%) with first-time starters.
  • he is 12 7-2-0 (58%/75%) the past two days.
  • he won the Keeneland meet with 20 victories
  • he went 55 20-10-9 (36%/71%) at the Keeneland meet.
  • he had twice as many wins to runner up Brad Cox's 10 wins this meet.

  • Wesley Ward won five times with nine starters. He was victorious four times at Keeneland and with his lone starter at Gulfstream.
  • Laurel (MD) is scheduled tentatively to re-open June 4. The track is undergoing track repairs.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $8 million.
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. rode the card and finished with four wins. He is 14 6-2-1 this meet, already putting up potent numbers.
  • The Ortiz boys have nine wins, the rest of the colony has eight wins. The meet is two days old. One win came from Golden Gate, a rarity to see that at a NYRA track.

  • Chad Brown trained three winners.
Gulfstream (Florida);
  • Race 3: Baby Boomer (Emisael Jaramillo/Gerald Bennett) gave the trainer his 3,975th all-time win which is the now the record for any Canadian-born conditioner.
Keeneland (Kentucky):
  • Closing day: The April 2-23 meet ended today with $164,680,229 bet, up 7.5% from 2019 when $153,116,119 was wagered in comparable dates. The 2020 meet as canceled.
  • Joel Rosario-Wesley Ward teamed to go a perfect 3 3-0-0.
  • Wesley Ward was an exceptional 6 4-1-0.
  • Race 9: War Like Goddess (Julien Leparoux/Bill Mott) won the Grade 3 $150,000 Bewitch Stakes, run at 1 1/2 miles.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: Roughly $7 million.

Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: Over $10,000,000.
  • Jose Ortiz rode three winners. The Brothers Ortiz (Jose and Irad) combined for five wins and have more victories (14) than the rest of the colony (12 wins) through three days..
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Card: Six of the 11 races held purses of $100,000+. A fun day at the Baltimore track.
  • The Russells: Even the hot hubby-wife combo have forgettable days. 3 0-1-0 including two unplaced spots in stakes.
  • Race 10: The Reds (Victor Carrasco/John Kimmel) was put up to victory via DQ and will receive an automatic berth in the Preakness Stakes. The 3-year-old son to Tonalist won the 40th edition of the $125,000 Frederico Tesio Stakes. The Reds won for the second time in seven lifetime starts and his first race outside of New York.
Tampa Bay Downs (Florida):
  • Handle: $5.5 million.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $9.3 million.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Opening day: The first card was run at night, beginning at 6:00 pm ET. The meet runs until June 26.
  • Tyler Gaffalione had three winners on opening night. He won all three Churchill downs meets in 2020.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $7 million. It has been said many times but this is just one attractive track. Good stuff every weekend or so it seems.
  • David Cohen had a brilliant 4-win day. He is tied for fifth spot with 30 wins this meet.
Golden Gate Fields (California):
  • Handle: $5.9 million. Strong numbers for GGF.
  • Race 8: Stalking Shadow (Evin Roman/Jonathan Wong) won the $100,000 California Derby. Wong entered two in the race and finished 1-2.
  • Race 9: Whisper Not (Geovanni Franco/Richard Baltas) won the $250,000 Grade 3 San Francisco Mile. Whisper Not was bred in Great Britain where he raced but since coming to the US has amassed a mark of 5 2-2-1 including a third in a Grade 2 at Santa Anita.

Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $12.3 million.
  • Race 7: Flightline (Flavien Prat/John Sadler), a $1,000,000 purchase by Hronis Racing (longtime California-based owners), won a key $61,000 Maiden Special Weight race which included two other high priced horses making debuts. The 3-year-old colt, a son to Tapit, looked marvelous.

  • Race 8: As Time Goes By (Mike Smith/Bob Baffert) improved to 6 3-2-1 after winning decidedly the $200,000 Grade 2 Santa Margarita Stakes. The 4-year-old filly was sent off at her morning line odds of 3-to-5.

Junior Alvarado has in fact suffered a concussion in an opening day injury at Belmont. He has since been off his mounts and will not ride for the foreseeable future until further evaluation. He was scheduled to ride at Churchill Downs and possibly have a mount in the Kentucky Derby (Caddo River was a consideration).

Jose Lezcano, off since late January due to surgery to his knee and shoulder, returns Thursday. Belmont is short riders with injuries to mainstay Junior Alvarado and Pablo Fragoso who will eventually head to New Jersey. Many regular NYRA riders will be in Kentucky this weekend.

Umberto Rispoli got his Derby mount. Kudos to the connections. The Derby board has another change. That will be updated [edit: Caddo River is the latest defection].

Brooklyn Strong is a New York bred, trained by Philadelphia-based Danny Velazquez.

McIngvale to Make Largest Bet in Derby History (thoroughbreddailynews.com)

Owner Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is planning to bet at least $2 million to win on Essential Quality (Tapit) in Saturday's GI Kentucky Derby as a hedge to cover the costs of a furniture promotion underway at his Gallery Furniture stores. It is believed that McIngvale's bet will be the largest ever placed on the Derby or any U.S. horse race.

McIngvale has already launched the “Kentucky Derby Fave Wins, You Win” promotion. Anyone buying a mattress that costs $3,000 or more will receive a 100% refund if the favorite wins the race. Costumers will also have the option of receiving a store credit of 150% of the price paid for the mattress. McIngvale won't know until Saturday exactly how many mattresses his stores will have sold in relation to the promotion but says it will likely be around “a couple thousand.”

REST IN PEACE: John Ward, who trained Monarchos famously to the 2001 Kentucky Derby win, passed away. He hit a home run with Monarchos that year and among the defeated was Point Given who Gary Stevens won called the greatest horse he had ever ridden. Ward trained from early 1970s until 2012.

Twenty years ago we nearly witnessed history with the fastest Kentucky Derby ever recorded:

One of the best sports trivia questions of all-time sets up this way: Monarchos was the second fastest Kentucky Derby winner. Secretariat was the only winning horse faster. Who had the second fastest Kentucky Derby time recorded? The answer is Sham, who finished second to Secretariat in 1973. As the question is posed, most would assume Monarchos.

Thirty years ago, Strike the Gold won the 1991 Kentucky Derby. He finished his career with just six wins in 31 starts. After the Derby won, he lost 12 straight races before finally winning again.

The awesome Chris Antley on board.

Nick Zito
repeated training a Derby winner three years later with Go For Gin.

This year's Derby has one starting gate with 20 horses unlike the supplemental gate for #15 to #20.

A little history...

Best post position at the Kentucky Derby

In terms of producing Kentucky Derby winners as well as winning wagers, the best post position at the Kentucky Derby is gate No. 10. This middle spot boasts nine Derby champs (10.7%) and 24 horses in the money in 84 total starts (28.7%), edging out No. 5 with 10 race winners and 22 ITM finishes in 91 overall starts.

Worst post position at the Kentucky Derby

Gate No. 17 is the worst post position in the Kentucky Derby. No. 17 has yet to produce a Derby champ and has had only three horses finish in the money, through 42 overall starts. No. 6 hasn’t fared that well either, with just two winners and only 13 horses ITM through 91 starts.
Wins by post position trends

  • Post No. 5 boasts the most Kentucky Derby winners with 10 (11%), most recently Always Dreaming in 2017. Posts No. 10 (nine winners) and No. 15 (six winners) are the next two most successful starting positions for the Kentucky Derby.
  • Post No. 17 has never produced a Kentucky Derby winner since the starting gate was introduced in 1930, however, due to race dropouts No. 17 has had only 42 starts. With that in mind, No. 6 is also a bad starting position with only two wins in 91 starts (2.2%).
  • Drawing the rail in post No. 1 is challenging but not impossible, as it’s produced eight Derby champions – the last being Ferdinand in 1986. However, drawing one of the four inside gates isn’t advantageous, with gates No. 1 through No. 4 ranging in win percentages between 5.5 and 8.8 and the last winner out of those first four gates coming in 2010 (Super Saver).
  • The longest Derby drought between winners is post No. 14 which last boasted a winner in 1961 (Carry Back) and has only claimed two champs in 66 starts (3%).

The Kentucky Derby draw is now available through this live stream: Road to Kentucky Derby and Oaks 147 Video

a.k.a "Please don't give me the inside post"

Running account of the picks ...

The #20 is the first post drawn.

The first 10 post positions have been drawn. Not picked yet: 1-5-6-7-9-12-14-16-17-19.

If Brad Cox was nervous before the draw -- and he appeared antsy -- he is especially anxious now.

Wow! I have never heard a roar such as we just witnessed. Hot Rod Charlie gets #9.

1-6-14-16-17 remain.

Three left: 1-14-16.

Florida Derby winner gets the rail. This changes things dramatically.

14 + 16 are the two slots left. And the expected pre-race favorite Essential Quality has yet to be chosen.

Essential Quality gets #14, a post that has not won the Derby since 1961. He is the favorite to win this race.

Todd Pletcher gets inside and outside. His four horses went 1 5-11-20. He has trained more Derby horses than anyone in history. He can't be thrilled with drawing the rail.
