It isn't abnormal to have a hockey connection on Derby day.

This is one for Brooklyn Strong:

Mark Schwartz Derby Dreaming With Bargain-Priced Wood Entrant Brooklyn Stong - Horse Racing News | Paulick Report

Brooklyn Strong has stirred a renewed passion for racing for the Schwartz family after winning 3-of-4 career starts, including a last-out score in the Grade 2, $150,000 Remsen at Aqueduct.
Schwartz said his wife, Amanda, and their sons Jonathan and Bryan, are counting down the days to Saturday's main event.

“They're excited but no one could be as excited as I am,” said Schwartz, with a laugh. “They're enjoying the experience. My kids are big sports fans but were never really racing fans until now.”
Schwartz, a graduate of Brooklyn College, said coining a name for his stable star came easy, although another option was in the cards for the hockey-loving family who are fans of New York Rangers winger Artemi Panarin.

“The name was easy. He's by Wicked Strong and I love Brooklyn,” said Schwartz. “But my kids liked the name Breadman. They like the Rangers and Panarin is called the 'Breadman' but the name happened to be taken.”

Belmont (New York):
  • Irad Ortiz, Jr. had three winners. The nation's leading rider rode for seven different trainers.
  • Race 8: Jose Lezcano returned to race earlier in the day. He won for the first time since January 31, his most recent day. He had surgery on his shoulder and knee.
  • Handle: Over $7 million.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Carol Cedeno, who usually has her successes at Delaware, rode three winners. She leads this meet with eight wins with high marks of 20 8-4-2 (40%/70%).
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Race 3: Jessica (Rene Diaz/Michael Yates) wired the field at 6-to-1. The jockey began his career 0-for-17, but won for the first time. The 21-year-old rider went to high school with fellow jockey Romero Maragh and galloped in the mornings at Gulf. He was very emotional after the win. As tradition dictates, the rider succumbed to celebratory ritual:

  • Handle: $4.2 million.
Belterra (Ohio):
  • Opening day: The Cincinnati track operates until October 8.
  • Perry Wayne Ouzts won twice. The 66-year-old rider is 6th all-time in North America wins with 7,155.
Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Conditions: Sloppy. One race was pulled from the turf though two ran.
  • Florent Geroux rode both winners on the lone turf stakes run this day.
  • Race 5: Will E Sutton (Javier Castellano/Jonathan Thomas), a $1,000,000 purchase in 2019 and a son to Curlin, broke his maiden in his third try.
  • Race 8: Opening Verse (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the $130,000 stakes.
  • Race 10: Into Mystic (Florent Geroux/Brendan Walsh) won the $150,000 Unbridled Sidney Stakes. The $650,000 purchase is 19 6-5-3 lifetime and has hit the board in eight of his past nine starts (was 12th in a Breeders' Cup race).

  • Forecast: Sunny and around 70 degrees for Friday. Similar conditions on Saturday.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • Handle: $3.5 million.
  • Steve Asmussen's lone win brought him within 139 victories of all-time leader Dale Baird. Barring anything unforeseen, Asmussen will break the North America mark for training wins later in 2021.

Churchill Downs' simulcast feed color scheme is unappealing with the mostly pink screen. The Kentucky Oaks day is important and the idea behind the charitable endeavors significant but to see white font on a mostly pink background is tough to discern when handicapping. The bettors should be considered when changing numbers are paramount to handicapping.

The yellow numbers on pink is especially tough.

Huge stretch duel in the Oaks. Two unbeaten fillies at the wire. Malathaat is the winner.

That could be the training job of the year to date. I will add to the comment later.

It is very difficult to train baby girls and that is the opinion of many. This winner is also large. What Todd Pletcher did should not be overlooked. The horse could run in one of the Triple Crown races perhaps the Belmont. Could Pletcher repeat Rags to Riches' 2007 Belmont win?

  • Brad Cox, reigning Trainer of the Year, entered horses at three tracks and won at each. He finished 9 4-0-2.
Belmont (New York):
  • Handle: $7 million.
  • Manny Franco won three times. Most of the bigger named riders were at Churchill.
Pimlico (Maryland):
  • Canceled: Following race 3, racing at the track was canceled due to high winds. Of course, I was 3-for-3. Grrr.
Tampa Bay (Florida):
  • Handle: $4 million.
  • Race 9: The $.50 Pick 5 paid over $35,000.
  • Closing weekend: The meet closes May 2 and the track is dark until approximately late November with the exception of the annual June 30-July 1 days of racing.
Gulfstream (Florida):
  • Handle: $6.4 million.
  • Paco Lopez rode three winners.

Churchill Downs (Kentucky):
  • Card: 13 races highlighted by the Kentucky Oaks and five other graded stakes.
  • Weather: Glorious.
  • Attendance: Over 41,000, reduced due to Virus restrictions but as big a crowd as has been seen at a track in quite some time.
  • Handle: $54.3 million, up 76% compared to 2020. The record posted in 2019 was $60.2 million with a crowd of 105,719. More than $17 million was bet on the Oaks.
  • Race 6: Maxfield (Jose Ortiz/Brendan Walsh) won the $400,000 Grade 2 Alysheba Stakes at 1-to-2 and improved his gaudy record to 7 6-0-1. His only loss came in March. Ortiz recaptured the mount on a horse in which the rider is now 4 4-0-0 riding. Maxfield is nearing millionaire status.
  • Race 7: Gift List (Javier Castellano/Brian Lynch) won the $300,000 Grade 2 Edgewood Stakes. It was her first win in two U.S. starts for the filly bred in Great Britain.
  • Race 8: Shedaresthedevil (Florent Geroux/Brad Cox) won the Grade I $500,000 La Troienne Stakes. She is 13 7-2-3 lifetime and is approaching $2 million lifetime earned.

  • Race 9: Obligatory (Jose Ortiz/Bill Mott) won the $300,000 Grade 2 Eight Belles Stakes at 16-to-1. It was only her fourth lifetime start but the impressive kick in the stretch caught many eyes. She is a daughter to Curlin.

  • Race 10: Fast Boat (Irad Ortiz, Jr./Joe Sharp) won the $200,000 Grade 2 Twin Spires Turf Sprint Stakes
  • Race 11: Malathaat (John Velazquez/Todd Pletcher) improved to 5 5-0-0 lifetime with a solid and gutsy win. She won the 147th edition of the $1,25 million Kentucky Oaks which is the longest continually held sporting event in the USA along with the Kentucky Derby. The filly may be headed to Triple Crown races later.

Arlington (Illinois):
  • Opening day: Today began what appears to be the last year in the history of the venerable racetrack.
  • Graphics: Easy to read and a good color scheme with mostly blue and yellow but also thick fonts. If the track is departing, sadly, why not incorporate a similarly pleasant visual on broadcast at other tracks the entity owns? Come on Churchill (owners), fans deserve better.
  • Brittany Vanden Berg won with two of her three starters. She is a brilliant 30 15-5-2 (50%/73%) in 2021, her third year of training since ending her jockey career. She is winning at a 33% clip career-wise.
Prairie Meadows (Iowa):
  • Opening night: The meet operates April 30 - September 25.
Oaklawn (Arkansas):
  • David Cabrera rode the card and had a 3- win day.
  • Handle: $6 million.
Santa Anita (California):
  • Handle: $7 million.
  • Race 2: Big Treat (Emily Ellingwood/Ryan Hanson) won a race complete with first-timers by 10 lengths. That is a helluva debut perhaps more so for a $6,500 purchase.

Hastings (BC) will operate May 3 - September 25. I believe that will be the first thoroughbred racing in 2021 at any track in Canada. The track has taken entries.

Assiniboia (MB) is scheduled to run May 17 - September 8.

Century Mile (Edmonton area, AB) is scheduled to run May 14 - October 30.

Century Downs (Calgary area, AB) does not have any T-bred races scheduled.

Woodbine (ON) has had its opening day postponed to May 20 at the earliest due to provincial restrictions.

Fort Erie (ON) is scheduled to run from June 1 - October 19.

Ajax Downs (ON) is scheduled to open May 12 for quarter horses.
