we are significantly better than calgary, more or less dominated them so far this season playwise.

No, but one where they spanked Tampa Bay would be. Guess that ass beating we got from Calgary woke us up again.

I'm not sure the Calgary game or the Tampa game is ass beating or a spanking. Goal differential is only at 3 points. In today's NHL that's not massive. Seems like there is a lot of lead changes this year.

Like I said I agree the Sharks have played much better lately, but I don't think it goes back a couple of weeks as I feel they have been better for longer. I don't think they're rounding into form, I think they're already there and are part of that upper echelon of teams. Proclaiming it while thumping on the Oilers of all teams seems weird.

NHL Hockey Standings

1 pt back with one game more played. "Significantly better".

Did you mean comparable and part of the upper end teams?

I don't think they have been playing poorly either short of a game here or there but finishing and goaltending have been an issue. The forwards are closing the deal and covering the dzone better. This is a marked improvement.

a) that was not draft day

b) that's pretty tired material even if you did execute the joke well
Ohhh man, lets get technical. I know it wasn't draft day. It was prior to draft day, lottery day. Same shit.

I think every team has issues except for Tampa, and nobody is winning all 82 games obviously, it just doesn't happen.

Goaltending has been a major issue for the Flames.

The flames have a .921 goalie. The sharks have two mike smiths basically.

The Sharks barely hung on and got away with three blatant infractions in the final minute to beat Mike Smith at home, and then got demolished on the ice and threw a tantrum at the Saddledome.

They've been playing better since the Calgary debacle for sure, definitely closer to expectation, but they've beaten the struggling Avs, Kings and Oilers lately along with the Tampa game where they may not have gotten Tampa's best. I think Thursday's matchup with the Knights is intriguing. The Knights have also been hot lately, but they haven't played a quality team since well before Christmas.

What people don’t seem to realize is that when comparing two teams that have played roughly 45 games, it’s generally good to look at other factors, including prior performances from those teams and their players, when judging their play.

Historically, the Sharks are a lot better than the Flames. And they added Karlsson, who is historically the best defenseman of his generation. Calgary, meanwhile, is historically a pretty mediocre team. They’re currently benefitting from a lot of “out of the norm” performances from players like David Rittich, Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk, Elias Lindholm, Sean Monahan, and Mark Giordano. (Players like Gaudreau and Giordano are great but they’re also having career years by significant margins.)

As I mentioned in another thread, Calgary isn’t even top-10 in any of the following metrics: 5V5 GF/60, 5V5 GA/60, PP%, or PK%. The only reason they are currently winning games at the level of an elite team is because they are 1st in the NHL in power play opportunities, and they’ve had 20 more PP opportunities than penalty kills. Bill Peters is a coach with a history of strong disciplined teams, but the way that the Flames play hockey, along with the fact that they regularly play dirty players like Sam Bennett and Garnet Hathaway, leads me to believe that they probably won’t be able to sustain such good favor with the referees.

Remember, it’s still early into the season. It wasn’t very long ago that Morgan Rielly led the entire league in scoring. Let’s see where we are by season’s end.

Lmao, "dirty players like Sam Bennett and Garnet Hathaway." Sam Bennett is a tough player, but has no disciplinary history because he is not a dirty player. He's not even really a rat anymore like he tried to be for a while as a rookie. He just likes to throw big, clean hits at this point and is willing to go to bat for his teammates. And Garnet Hathaway never does anything remotely noteworthy, let alone dirty.

Also, prior seasons don't factor into the current season. Especially not when so many things have changed. Prior history didn't prevent the Oilers from beating the Sharks in 2017, for instance.

If I'm confident about any one thing with the Sharks, it's that they never really look committed to good defensive-zone coverage when I watch them. Against the Flames they hung Aaron Dell out to dry, and that was a game for the division lead that they should have been up for. Their goalies look to be lacking confidence, and it's no wonder why. It reminds me of the Flames from early in the year circa the Pittsburgh game.

Look up Sam Bennett’s history of questionable hits in the NHL, you’ll find quite a few. Of course you’re biased and will try to rationalize every hit but it’s pretty clear to me that he’s got a few that are questionable at the very least. Regarding Hathaway, I haven’t seen any from him in the NHL but I’ve heard about his dirty hits in the AHL (where he belongs). Even if he doesn’t throw dirty hits, employing a fighter like him isn’t generally a tendency of the type of team that wins games because of their strong commitment to being disciplined and drawing penalties.

Even Oilers fans will tell you that they won the playoff series against the 2017 Sharks because Couture and Thornton were both seriously injured and completely ineffective. The Oilers were also better over the entire 82 game regular season of 2016-2017. As I said before, let’s see where the Flames and Sharks finish after 82 games of this season.

Judging from the last comment, I’m guessing you haven’t seen any of their last three games. Which makes me wonder why you’re posting about them in this GDT about tonight’s game, where they quite obviously made a strong commitment to team defense.

Someone mentioned it already but really San Jose, Jock Jams is your goal song?

Unless this is some '90's theme night, in which case I apologize.

It used to be our own version of the hey song but with all the bad crap Gary Glitter got busted for they decided to change it.

As a side note. Some jackass Oil fans decided to pick fights with the home crowd and got escorted out of the venue. Good going you f***wits. If you want to be morons, be morons somewhere else. Like your own barn.
