And if that's all you got you're going to get a mutiny before your first season is over. There needs to be some kind of plan and the back half of that third period did not look like a team with a plan
Please. That plan worked perfectly well for 6 games, and almost worked against 2 of last year's 4 best teams on the road.

Fix the special teams and they'll be fine.

On the one hand, we did just play Tampa, a potential cup contender (again) after our 3rd game in 4 nights...I didn't really expect a win...

...on the other hand, our special teams are an absolute joke that's literally costing us otherwise winnable games...and why do we always get pwned by f***ing backup goalies all the time? It's one thing to get blanked by a Bob, Lundy, Quick, Rinne, MAF...it's another thing to repeatedly get shut down by guys who are career backups and half the time aren't even in the NHL anymore after a few years. Take out the Rangers game and we probably have one of the leagues worst SH%

they're not going to be playing teams like the Jets and Lightning every single night

Still, I do think it's legit to wonder how long the "outskate everyone like a pack of wild animals" thing is going to maintain its momentum in the face of really tough fundamentals like sub-.900 goaltending and league-worst PP and PK units.

Tyler Johnson owns this team. Dude completely robbed Hanifin of his soul last year, got his first ever goal against Ward, and now has a hat trick.

Congrats to Necas on getting his first goal, but f***ing hell, that was just another in a long line of typical Hurricanes losses.

And, for crying out loud. Why is it so goddamn hard to have a competent power play? Jesus Christ it's so infuriating to watch that shit. PK sucks ass too.

Shit, can we have the preseason points rollover for us?

Ok, 4 out of 5 at home to close the month out, with only 2 games in the next 9 days starting tomorrow. This group needs to get some rest, refocus, and figure some shit out. Hopefully they’ll be ready to finish the month like they started it, and these last two games were just a blip on the road against two of the best in the league.

The first half the third I though we came out and looked decent then they scored and we fell flatter then 3 week old open soda.

Yep . They were straight up flat. Gassed, and just not up to the task to take on a rested, talented team like lightning. That crushing relentlessness was no where to be found. The Lightning stole it from us.

I have to think the PP ineffectiveness and the backup-goalie issue are directly linked. PPs are where teams elevate from scoring 1 or 2 goals a game and losing, to scoring 3 or 4 and winning. Seeing as we've been something like 0-8 or 0-9 in our losses, and those losses have involved backup goalies allowing only 1-2 goals a game, it's pretty easy to see where we would solve the mystery if the PP was at all effective.

I'm not mad, I'm just disappointed.

I still think this Canes team is very different than its predecessors. They just played two of the deepest and most talented teams in the NHL, teams who have been together longer therefore are more cohesive as a hockey team. It's still going to take awhile for us to comfortably compete with teams like that. More experience, talent upgrades and fixing the special teams will go a long way. But I don't feel we're nearly as far off as we used to be, that's for sure.

why is this fanbase so bipolar

we started 4-0-1 then lost to 2 cup contending teams

calm the **** down

I don't think anyone's freaking out, but it's completely legit to note that we have the 26th and 28th ranked special teams units, and that this is leading directly to losing winnable games. Considering we now have 4 wins in 7 games, we are not in a position to just wave off that sort of thing like the Ws are just going to rain down on us later.

No kidding, I feel like some perspective got lost at some point. If you had either of these last two games marked down as wins you were way too optimistic.

Concerns about goaltending are legitimate but there's nothing we can do about that. Special teams is something that is a matter of chemistry and can take some time to build.

Probably because the same shit keeps happening. Outshooting opposition and losing to backup goaltender, bad special teams, getting owned time and time again by Canes killers like Tyler Johnson despite roster turnover and new coaching staff. Shit gets old.

I understand Tampa and Winnipeg are better and more experienced teams, but if this teams wants to take the next step they have to beat these teams too, and stop with the same bullshit that costs them points .

This same kind of stuff happened to the good teams of the early 2000's. That team that lost to Detroit in the SCF would put up 40-45 SOG but couldn't buy a goal to save its damn life. It's as much as part of the Canes identity as red uniforms.

Good Assessment.
Team will get their mojo back in their next game.
