Well the tweets says that he wouldn't be surprised to see him sign that type of contract. Nowhere did it say he already signed one.

The Flames offered him an 8 years x 8.5 million deal though.

Between not wanting to play for a Canadian team and the current state of the Flames, it shouldn't be surprising he turned down an extension.

I wouldn't want to waste my best years on a rebuilding/re tooling team either. Vegas has somewhat of a tax advantage sure, but they're also the reigning champions and are going to be a cup contender for the foreseeable future.

Per the income tax calculator, $7m in Vegas leads to $4m in after tax income. $7m in Calgary leads to $3.67m. And Calgary supposedly offered him $8.5m per, which is $4.45m in after tax income.

They have a lot of expiring money. Martinez, Stephenson, Marchessault, Carrier, Mantha, etc. Close to 18 M by my count.

There is definitely a way to fit Hanifin in even after the Hertl trade and run a very top heavy roster.
