YOW
that was somewhat ridiculous. It was as if there was an invisible player there helping lehner out.

IIHF needs to get rid of the 10 minute miscount, it's way overused. I'm not blaming the refs though.

NHL rejects such as Dallman and Bochenski are among the best players in the KHL.

The problem is not that young players are not getting their changes. The problem is the lack of good young players. If a player is good enough he will get his change.

And that's the problem - guys like Dallman and Bochenski are some of the best KHL players while they barely got a sniff in the NHL.

A lot of times it seems teams sign foreign players for the sake of signing foreign players disregarding the fact that they can sign a player of similar level from Russia for much less money. But the prestige of having a "former NHLer" is just too great. Then when they start signing all these people, we start losing teams like Lada and Krylia Sovetov because they can't afford to compete with ridiculous and needless spending of others and these are the teams whose schools used to deliver some of the best players for us.

Coaching definitely has to improve. It seems like everyone is still stuck in 1985 with their tactics and while it works internally, the teams consistently fail when they hit the international stage.

This does not explain all. Russian hockey has declined from what it was in 1985 but it has also declined from what it was in 2000-2005.

The level of import players is total crap, though with a few exceptions.
Vasicek, Dallman, Kapanen, Aaltonen, Kontiola, Demitra, Hartigan, Weinhandl, Mårtensson, Niskala, Rachunek, Sykora, Platt, Persson, Cajanek, Immonen, Fransson, Stumpel, Petrasek, Podhradsky, Radivojevic, Ruzicka, Baranka, Fernholm, Jagr, Cervenka, Rämö, Kukkonen, Marek, Rolinek, Lehterä, Komarov etc are not crap. This is by far the best crop of imports in any European league.

Take them away and what do you have left?
