Jimmy Howard update:

He will start in Grand Rapids again on Wednesday vs Manitoba and then the Red Wings will access his play after the game and they may determine if they want him to play Friday in Iowa before coming up to the Red Wings. With the Red Wings schedule this week, this might end up happening with the Wings in Wash on Thur, at Columbus on Sat and at Minn on Sunday.

Who is Chevy?

It's a popular nickname for Evgeny Svechnikov, he was drafted 19th overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.

Keep doing your thing Chevy.

Really was hoping Chabot lasted another pick in that '15 draft, but I've never wavered on Svechnikov. Could be a great add to the top 6 with the jam he plays with.

GR Griffins 4- Manitoba Moose 1

Howard gave up his only goal of the night early in the first on a 3 on 2 defense breakdown. Moose player one timed shot between circles and placed it next to the post. Nice goal. Griffins were hitting in the first but could not get the bounces to go their way. Howard kept the Griffins in the game as he had to make several stops on odd man rushes.

2nd period. Griffins got a 4 minute power play and Frk one timed it from the point to tie it up. Tangradi got a backhander in front of the net for the game winner. Howard was did not have much work in the 2nd as he stopped all 3 shots.

3rd period. Frk blasts another one timer PP goal to make it 3-1. Bertuzzi got a nice feed from Svechnikov and he scored off his own rebound to make it 4-1. Howard was going along, but at the 9 minute mark, he dove to make a save in front of his net and he had a difficult time getting up. Play went on for another minute and he had to make another save before the whistle blew. During the timeout, Howard skated to the bench and told the trainer that something happened to his knee and he went to the locker room for the rest of the night. Howard made 16 saves. Pasquale came in and stopped the last 6 shots he faced.

Drew Miller played in his first Griffins game as he was on the 4th line with Campbell and Turgeon. He almost scored on his first shift and that line that Manitoba baffled for most of the night. Miller was on the 2nd PK unit and they did their job.

Svechnikov got and assist on the 4th goal to keep his scoring streak alive, but he had a difficult night for us. Tried to do too much and the Moose had him bottled up for most of the night.

(Per Coach Nelson after game interview): Doctors check out Howard after the game. Preliminary reports shows nothing wrong with Howard's knee (same knee he injured). Just a knee jerk reaction. Will observe him overnight to see if any swelling or pain occurs. Flight to Des Moines, IA will be tomorrow morning. If Howard is fine, he will catch an afternoon flight to meet the team in Iowa. Original plan was that Howard was to start Friday in Iowa for his 3rd and final game at his own request. Hope to know more tomorrow.

Detroit's not going to lose Bertuzzi to waivers that soon. He'll start on the roster for 18/19. He's been good down there, but I would like to see him become more dominant.

Wouldn't be an unrealistic pathway. Once you get a team that can get into the playoffs to begin with..

Griffins reply back with a 4-3 (shootout) win in Iowa last night.

Griffins got revenge from the previous night as they defeated the Iowa Wild in a shootout victory. Griffins would score first only for the Wild to tie it up minutes later. Was like that for most of the night. Iowa tied the game late on a 6-4 PP goal with 99 seconds to go in the 3rd to force OT. Russo took a tripping penalty with 1:20 left in OT, but Iowa could not convert. Both teams scored on their opening shootout attempt as Iowa went first. Svechnikov got the Griffins shootout goal. Then both teams could not score in the next 2 rounds. Iowa was stopped in their 4th shooter and Tyler Bertuzzi scored the shootout goal winner by skating in and he five-holed it by the goalie. Cal Heeter stopped 37 of 40 shots and 3 of 4 in the shootout for the victory.

Griffins outlast Moose in special (Moose hunt) morning game:

It was not the prettiest of games to watch for both teams this morning, but somehow the Griffins fought off the officials and the Moose in a special morning game for the kids here in GR by a 7-5 score.

Manitoba had the officials help them out on their first goal as they scored on a 5 on 3 PP goal as the Moose got to the Griffins early. After Paetsch argued at the ref after the goal (Moose player were picking our defender preventing to cover the side guy in front of our goal) the Moose had another 5 on 3 ,but the Griffins killed it off. Griffins tied it up as Svechnikov tipped a Hicketts shots in front of the goal to keep his scoring streak alive, seconds after the Griffins power play expired. Tangradi tipped another Hickets shots in front of the goal to score a PP goal late in the first.

Manitoba dominated the 2nd period as they scored :13 in the period as the d shot from the point and someone in front deflected it by Pasquale (who had a difficult game today in goal). A Frk penalty near the halfway mark helped the Moose score their 2nd PP goal to take a 3-2 lead. Griffins tied it up when Matthew Ford dumped the puck in the Moose end and the puck it the end boards and came straight out in front of an open net for Kyle Criscuolo to tap it in to tie it at 3-3. Lashoff took a puck in the face in front of the Moose goal, but he came back half way in the third with a full shield.

Bertuzzi was getting tired of getting hit around by several Moose players, so he start hitting back and had an end of the period schuffle with 2 players. It carried over in the 3rd as he got drilled at the opening faceoff and got the Griffins on a PP at the :05 mark. Griffins scored 2 goals 23 seconds apart to break the game over just over the half way mark. Bertuzzi scored a nice PP goal and Drew Miller got a nice feed from Criscuolo on a 2 on 1 to bury it for his first Griffins goal. Tangradi scored another PP goal over 3 minutes later to put the game out of reach. Manitoba got a goal with 2:49 left and Mitch Callahan got an empty netter as Tangradi had 2 chanced earlier to get his hat trick missed the net the first time and the second time hit the post from his own end to wrap the game up. The Moose scored with 26.0 left to end the scoring.

Griffins were sloppy at their end of the ice for most of the game. Russo and Svechnikov created numerous turnovers at their own end to keep the Moose in the game. Nosek and Lorito also had difficulties getting pucks out of their own end. Lines were switched around today as Ben Street was the veteran scratch, so our 5 forward PP unit was not out there today. Lorito dropped to the 2nd line as Bertuzzi went up to the first line.

Hicketts is starting to get points. He got to see time on the 2nd PP unit today. His overall game is starting to come around. Defensively, he is improving and he is not afraid to check someone. The 2nd PP unit got 2 PP goals and missed a third by :05 (Svechnikov goal). He is pretty consistent in keeping the puck inside the opponent's blue line to keep the offensive pressure going.

He still has work to do to improve himself. His skating needs some work for sure, and he has an occasional problem clearing pucks out of his own zone (especially deep in the corners). But for a undrafted first year pro, he is doing very well. I'm happy he is here.
