A disappointing game from both teams who are supposedly locked in a life and death struggle for the playoffs. But the bottom line in this game, is that neither team deserves to be going to the dance. And in all probability neither team will be.

With the Canucks, you're seeing the inevitable result of a roster that is pockmarked with journeymen players, instead of having a bunch of young players on entry-level contracts who are improving through the course of the season.

But that's the black hole Benning and the previous hockey ops department left this team in. So the last 13 games about is all about experimenting, but unfortunately other than Rathbone there's basically nobody in Abbotsford you'd even want to have as look at it.

So let's just get it over with and set the stage for the off-season.

That article on NHL.com talked about the most successful teams in OT and asked their coaches what their game plan is. Consistently said
1) Maintain possession
2) Short Shifts
3) Keep the tired opponent on the ice at all costs
4) They try pick plays in the offensive zone to get a step

For those counting
Miller tried Hero hockey twice in OT going 1 on 3 with toe drags
Horvat tried it twice with toe drags
Pettersson tried it once

I dont get why this team is obsessed with toe drags

Boudreau just called them out on the post-game presser....saying that you're not going to stickhandle past anyone traveling at only three-quarter speed.

And on three-on-three, it's absolutely essential that players stay on the right side the puck, which none of these guys was able to do in OT. One of the big reasons why they're now 3-7 in games that go past 60 minutes.

Vancouver, BC.
Finally back from the game with my kid. Got him a puck and he loved the experience.

Gotta say, could tell Miller was pretty grumpy the entire game (and was going at it with Eichel) till we scored and I was super worried about Boeser holding his wrist after Petey's sandwich.

Side note, Poolman is invisible live (or just in general). I think I saw his jersey once.

If a game gets to OT the points should just be split 1 each. Maybe when teams aren't really playing for anything we will get some more fun and fast paced OTs/shootouts.

Terribly flat beginning but did play their way into. However, lot of that had to do with the fact that Vegas is not a very good team right now (and let the Canucks back in) and the Canucks going with a relatively few players.

Good

Hughes - really wheeling in this one. Controlled a lot of the play with his skating and puck movement. Only place he faltered was in the 3 on 3.

Podkolzin - probably the best Canuck forward. Becoming a dominating force at times but still needs to convert that into points. Will do that , IMO, if he is moved up the lineup as he was in this one. Really should be on what ever the top line is.

OEL - strong game. Helping what ever duo he was put out with in terms of providing an outlet. Good movement off the puck and played well with the puck well in the offensive zone. Strangely his least effective shifts were with Myers and the Canucks might think about that.

Pearson - good two way game. One of the better Canuck players in keeping to some systematic play.

Not Good

Horvat - Maybe still sick but he was lugging all game. Play in the 3 on 3 was brain dead and probably never should have been played in that situation. Scored maybe the softest goal of the year when all he did was lose a face off.

Boeser - - ugh. Might have hope he would retain some touch around the net but that seems to have gone too. Never saw him win a puck battle all game. At this point might well be the worst skater on the team.

Poolman - gone almost before he returned. Didn't get much game time but enough to quickly establish how poor a skater and player he is. Hopefully he makes a full recovery from whatever brain issues he has but, to be purely mercenary about it, might not be bad if he ends up on LITR like Ferland going into next season.

Dickinson - very weak on his skates and often down on his fanny. Listless effort from a very poor player. As it was, he was given too much ice time. Buy-out territory here.

Others

Pettersson - overall you have to be happy with the huge improvement in play given his horrible start to the season. Made a number of very good plays and is nearing the form of his rookie season. Very important development for the team and removes some the dismal speculation that his previous play created. However, still prone to the big mistake too often.

MIller - little like Pettersson. Some dominate play mixed in with some bone head plays.

Lockwood - clearly not ready. Great skater but mostly just winging around with out much purpose. Circles himself out of the play too much and lacks touch with passes and shots.

Lammikko - lost without Motte and Highmore. Zero chemistry with present changing linemates leading to off sides and turnovers. Probably this was predicable but hurts the team since the checking line he formed with Motte and Highmore was critical to the Canucks mid-season success.

Chaisson - as much as this player gets deservedly ragged on, he is having a decent run. Seems to have picked up a step and helped in this game in gaining some good o-zone time.

Dermont - seen enough to know he is no better than a mediocre third pairing player. More or less a body to have around but not a player that is going to help you contend. TO did a good job of getting cap space and getting a third for him. Canucks were in the driver seat making this trade and absolutely needed to drive a harder bargain. Present management, to this point, has made a tentative and questionable start.

With Artizona ahead, Canucks will continue to pick up points even if the playoffs are out of the picture. Means it is pretty much established we finish in the middle of the first round in the draft. So we are probably talking Kasper or Ohgren. That means we get nothing immediate but at least we get something out of the first round this year.

Rathbone has to be pen’d into next season’s starting 6 or it’s a major GM and coaching failure. Need to find a way to get rid of garbage like Myers/Poolman and trade for a legit top 4 RHD that can defend AND skate.

On another note, at least Abby clinched the playoffs. Podkolzin down there might push them to legit contender status. At least one “Canucks” has a legit shot
